christmas shift (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sad-broke-student
last night, my store had our monthly meeting. my manager had a sheet printed where we could volunteer to work christmas day. i volunteered anytime on christmas and there were only 4 baristas who volunteered so it is likely that i will work the whole day. i was wondering, for those of you who have worked christmas at starbucks before, is it awful? i wasn’t sure if it would be too busy because of the fact that most people spend time with their families. just wanting to know if i’m going to be miserable or not lol

i really don’t have a definite answer but i overhead one of my co workers asking a shift about this and they said that the holidays itself are pretty damn busy but actual christmas day isn’t so bad because everyone will be celebrating at home for the most part and with family

okay okay nice that’s what i was thinking but idk i live in deep south and our store gets like 1000 customers a day so i’m just worried😭😭😭

I've only been with the company for one Christmas, but it was fairly busy. Though the others who had been there longer said it was slower than previous years. Still, we made pretty damn good on tips for the day! Christmas day tips are split only between partners working that day.

i know!!! i was sold on working christmas when my sm said that the tips were split between the people working lol

I don’t know how it works at all stores, but my store we tend to not open on Christmas Day if we don’t have enough volunteers (from what I understand), but then anyone who was wanting to work that day can be used at a different store. My first Christmas with Starbucks I was just assigned to go to a different store, last year we had a different SM and she said any of us who still wanted to work Christmas Day could let her know, but I decided not to. It was definitely busy the year I was at the other store, but their store is also generally busier than ours and since ours was closed they got some of our business.

Christmas afternoons are busy. Everything is closed and people are looking for places to go and things to do. Make sure you set yourself up in the morning for the afternoon rush.

I’ve heard it can be busy but the tips are amazing. Make sure you have a convo woth your ssm about only tip pooling with the partners who worked Christmas, not the partners for the whole week. You guys volunteered so you deserve the good xmas tips
sad-broke-student [OP] 2 points 8m ago
our sm said it was a rule for thanksgiving and christmas that only the partners working those days would get the tips!

Christmas shifts are the best! Customers are especially nice since you are open and tip well.

Your store isn’t closed? I don’t think any of the stores in my district have ever been opened on christmas
sad-broke-student [OP] 2 points 8m ago
we aren’t going to be closed because we had several people volunteer to work. but if we had like 2, then we would have been closed
rositalagata 3 points 8m ago
Usually, only a few stores in a district are open on Christmas, and they pool together all the volunteers into those couple of stores.

Working thanksgiving and Christmas is absolutely horrible. Imagine peak but 10X. I worked both holidays last year, and I can handle the heat pretty well when I am on bar, but I cried on the way home after my shift on thanksgiving. The amount of customers who were rude, terrible human beings got to me. And honestly tips weren't even worth it after all of that. Christmas didn't feel as bad, but I still hated myself after that shift. To each their own though.

We usually have a shorter day on Christmas and thanksgiving than we do normally! But we all make BANK in tips.

Idk my store always gets slammed, but the customers are very nice and happy that we’re open and tip VERY well. I love working Christmas

Yeah it’s going to be busy. And one of the most annoying parts about it for me is the amount of people that will come in and say things like “I can’t believe they have you working today!” And then proceed to be the reason we are lol

it depends on ur coworkers and ur store

I worked last Christmas and it was a really nice shift, I came in at noon when it was pretty busy (like all mochas and hot chocolates lol) but after that there was never more than a couple customers in the store

also got really nice tips

Where I am we only have a couple of stores in our district open on Christmas so baristas from other locations work at the open store. I have only worked one Xmas and will not do it again. It was extremely chaotic and poorly managed and just not worth it. I did make over $50 in tips for that single day so that was nice.

In my experience, it's pretty busy, but the customers tend to be much nicer and tip a whole lot more. Especially if they see how few of you there are

**IN MY AMERICAN METROPOLITAN AREA EXPERIENCE** Your manager and district manager usually will decide what hours and staffing is appropriate based on previous years data. Volunteering sign up is just to gauge who is dependable, and those partners typically get another holiday off for signing up for 1, but if your store needs staffing, your manager will just schedule people, even if they didn’t volunteer. Most Starbucks get hours reduced due to business on Christmas, but if your store is in a busy shopping center, around grocers, or in an area with a lot of foot traffic that caters to the holiday, except to be busy with large groups at a time, mostly in the afternoon and after dinner time if you’re even open that late. Starbucks in metro areas tend to be less busy since people travel for vacationing or back home, wherever it may be.
