First week training help. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nelzay
So I just started this week, I am enjoying it, I’m only on my second day but i’m learning more by the day. One thing i’m finding hard is understanding cup codes while on bar, I understand the standard cappuccino, latte, caramel macchiato, hot chocolate etc, but when there’s a lot on the cup it throws me off and I sort of start to panic if there’s more than 2 cups to make as i’ve only learnt how to make say 3 or 4 drinks.

Does anybody have any tips for learning the codes that will stick? I have the sheets with them on but they just don’t stick the more I look at it.

Personally I find that talking myself through the drink helps a lot, especially if you can talk through it with another barista and they can assure you it’s right / help fix anything before you’ve even made it. I don’t “steam milk, pull shots, pump syrups”, first I think “okay, this drink gets this milk, this many shots, and this many pumps of this syrup” and then I’ll do it. It’s been helping me so far, and I’m only in my second week of working!

100% this!! When its something rly intimidating i read the whole tag looking for what shots and what milk i need to queue, then while thats working I carefully follow the syrups and other instructions. It's okay if a drink is rly detailed to break sequence to make sure you get it right. Better to take a second to double check than to put pressure on yourself and make a mistake then have to sequence break anyways to fix it.

Thank you so much that actually helps as i sort of talk my way through the drink before i make it

is your store a drive thru location? if so, when i was training i had a headset on to listen to what people would order so i know what to expect in my queue. that way when the tickets would print, there would be few surprises. that helped me learn everything pretty quickly! also, never be afraid to ask questions

Yes it’s a drive thru location, ive been wearing a headset that’s helping me. Today I found myself making drinks without needing to ask what the code were so I guess that’s a plus, maybe it just takes time
