sbux’s latest fired union organizer signing off 🫡(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mmv_98
came into my opening keyholder shift yesterday, clocked in, got ready to work, then was brought aside by my SM & DM and was fired on a first offense. “violation of illness policy” for being sent home sick twice back in september, two days apart, bc apparently symptom onset at work means i should’ve called off beforehand.
seems they’re on a bit of a rampage right now so make sure y’all have each others backs. solidarity always ✊🏻

What they said
BabeLincoln42051 points8m ago
pls fight back
melkorarose19 points8m ago
This right here! I would definitely fight or even just report the store.

This is bull. At my store you can literally call out because you don't wanna come in, or you're feeling mentally low, and no one says anything because it's not really our buisness why a partner can't or doesn't want to come to work.
Ex;. I called out for the first time on Saturday due to a severe depressive episode (I have C-PTSD) and they were more worried if I was okay then stressing to find coverage for my shift that night. Even the SM checked on me at my next shift, and she knows exactly why I called out.
Ex 2: we've had to send partners home halfway into their shift. A partner wasn't feeling well a few hrs into her shift, the mid shift did a covid check run with her and she failed it, so she had to be sent home. She's still employed, nor was she written up, shiz happens.
I am sorry this happened to you. Starbucks can be a shitty company and some SMs and DMs suck. I hope you find a place that treats you better, so long partner!
TL:DR; shit happens. It's not the SM/DM or even starbucks' buisness why you call out or need to go home. Work is not your life!

Holy shit if that isn’t some far reaching petty reason to fire someone- the fuck I’m so sorry!

We've had people clearly go home not sick just because they were upset they had to do their job and they still have their job after multiple offeses. How the hell?
darkwolf5236 points8m ago
Fight them.

It's absolutely insane how blatant they're being. And there will still be Kool-Aid drunk workers that will excuse it on some level. But we all know this is fucked up. It's hardly in good faith to assume that you came to work sick on purpose when it should be common knowledge that returning to work too soon, something that we are encouraged to do via pressure, can cause the body stress which can make it fall sick again.
Fuck them dude. I'm sorry.

They can’t fire you for that
sheep_heavenly6 points8m ago
Someone tell SBUX that. The NLRB will eventually, but until then union workers are getting discriminated against and facing financially debilitating retaliation.

I actually had a supervisor get fired on his first offense too. Because he falsified his COVID coach and signed off as being able to work when he shouldn’t have.
mmv_98 [OP]4 points8m ago
that’s what they’re saying i did too. 🤷🏼♀️
mastaofdeath2 points8m ago
From what I heard… he signed off saying he himself was good to work, when the COVID coach told him otherwise. The COVID coach is there as documentation to prevent outbreaks. I know he was waiting until the next shift got on to leave(it’s what I would have done). But I think he should have written no instead of yes.

So you get fired for not calling in sick, but if you call in sick, your manager gives you a bunch of trouble... Sounds about right.
