question for barista trainers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by OkBee5311
Hi all! I’m planning on being a barista trainer after holiday and I’ve talked to my ASM about it! And have done all that jazz but now I’m getting nervous and almost this test anxiety about it.
What should I do to prepare like know all the receipts of course but like is there an outline or something I can reread? Ah I’m just nervous and have no confidence in myself about the situation!

There are trainer training modules you should take on My Learning. Your SM/ASM should assign them to you but you can also assign yourself. They’re short. You might also want to assign yourself the barista training modules and at least skim through. They’ve been updated in the past few months and if you’re familiar with what’s in there, you can better anticipate questions and know what concepts you might have to reinforce. Once you’re done, you can unassign the barista training without having to complete the whole thing again.

Look at the store resources app on the iPad and familiarize yourself with where to find everything like the trainer guides, recipe cards, routines, etc. Tons of stuff is in there, it’s really useful as a visual aid, and it can help your trainee be confident in finding info they need when you’re not there. Also make sure your trainee knows how to access other info like pay stubs, benefits info, and perks like Spotify, many managers don’t spend enough time going over stuff like that.

Be patient, everyone learns differently and people will pick things up at different paces. Observe, check in frequently, and ask your trainee if they have questions, since some people will be hesitant to ask on this own. You are your trainee’s best advocate - make sure your SM and SSV give you enough time on the floor together and don’t be afraid to politely push back if the SSV assigns positions in a way that makes training difficult, like putting you and your trainee in separate positions. Be careful about allowing other partners to teach them recipes, especially if your store has issues with standards - you don’t want them getting mixed messages.

I love training. It’s a lot of fun, and if your ASM is on board with you becoming a trainer, they’re confident in your knowledge and your ability to do so, which means you can be confident in yourself as well!

I didn't get a test when I did my Barista Trainer Training, but from what I've heard from other's in my store, they got tested on their routines and sequencing. If you want to check out in advance what you'll have to teach, you can find the barista training activity guides on store resources as well! I also brushed up on some standards before I started training by checking out the beverage resource manual, MOP user guide, etc., also on store resources. Have fun!
