So today we had our holiday launch. We had about 30 people waiting outside this morning with 2 of our partners being the first ones ( they were their since 2am, we open at 4 ) So doors open and our partners rush and get at about 8-10 cups each. Everyone was mad because 1. they were partners and 2. They grabbed so many cups that they left none behind for the other customers. Personally I think that we should be limited to at least 2 cups but, what do you think?

To answer your question with a question, what is it about Starbucks cups that make them inherently more valuable than any other cup?
nicolelynnejones92 points8m ago
Starbucks has become such a massive brand, far beyond just walking in and grabbing a coffee. A Starbucks drink has become an accessory. The logo is all over Etsy because people are dying to have personalized merch telling everyone how much they love it. The cups have become something like Rae Dunn; you collect it because the brand tells you to and you see other soccer moms doing it. Don’t get me wrong, some of the cups are gorgeous (I got the pink spiky one today), but to buy multiples of everything is far beyond “liking” something. Brand loyalty knows no bounds. That and reselling.
C-o-p-y19 points8m ago
Holy shit. My exact thoughts working today put into words
Alarming_Base314833 points8m ago
Because Starbucks cups are typically one and done designs, making them collectible.
Accomplished-Bad385615 points8m ago
If not being available for everyone makes them valuable that sort of undermines the motivation to make sure everyone who wants one can get one.
Specialist_Salt_5078 points8m ago
Starbucks specifically says they don’t produce enough to meet demand to drive up excitement
claretamazon24 points8m ago
The resell value on the cups is just...frankly stupid. I see them going for nearly a hundred sometimes.
sunflowercupcakee15 points8m ago
One of the first to come out was the studded rose gold. At the height of cup collecting, people were paying $300 and up
photo_rain10 points8m ago
Have u seen the resale value ?!!!! It’s ridiculous! People flip them and make like 4 times the amount they purchase - it’s annoying af
Accomplished-Bad38567 points8m ago
I think people used to do that with Beanie Babies
caligirlthrowaway10470 points8m ago
Many stores do put a limit on the cups for this exact reason. Tbh I think it’s messed up that they cleared out the whole stock and didn’t leave any for anybody else.
StillLearning1235818 points8m ago
I'm in a licensed store and we have a limit of 2 of each design per customer per day for the first 3 days of launch. Company actually puts put signage saying as much
zoidberg30005 points8m ago
This is what our entire 4 districts near me do. Wish more did.
Alarming_Base314861 points8m ago
I think it sounds er.. not great. And I'm sure a lot of managers wouldn't allow this, but also tbh, I'm not sure there is a written policy on it.
TheYesExpress50 points8m ago
My morning baristas cleared half our stock before 5am, and we opened at 4:30a. I’m talking something like 22-26 cups in total. There should absolutely be a limit.
breeeeeeeeee327 points8m ago
If they bought with the discount and are reselling, that’s a major no-no as far as I know.
Indica-daddy21 points8m ago
It doesn’t hurt anyone. Pisses people off, sure, but causes no one harm. I hope they upsell the hell out of them to make up for a small fraction of the lack of income Starbucks should be paying everyone.
AdNo149513 points8m ago
Yeah I frankly dont care
Take them all if you want,,,, I just work here
WateredDownLemonade5 points8m ago
Absolutely. We make 15 an hour and... these are plastic and/or glass cups. It's not that deep. Brand loyalty and fandom is whats ridiculous. Chill lol
iqueefkief1 points8m ago
it makes the day unbearable for other partners because it’s all the customers ask about. that’s the harm, i guess. it hurts the success of launch day, an already hard day, because ppl were greedy.
Indica-daddy1 points8m ago
They’re cups, friend. Anyone could walk through the door and do the same—many people have already said customers waited far before opening to clear the cups out.
They’ll be upset regardless, so no one is saved if it’s a customer vs. a partner taking them. People are responsible for their own feelings around not having access to cups—partners need to learn to hold emotional boundaries so we’re affected less by customers and their emotional immaturity. Leaving or taking cups doesn’t change that.
sten4521 points8m ago
I think partners > customers
Comfortable-Plane94430 points8m ago
Nobody needs that many fucking cups. They could just be respectful of the fact that others wanted some
ItzBoogieMan17 points8m ago
I work at this miserable ass job. I’m taking first pick. Customers can suck it
seacookie8912 points8m ago
Pick one or two not ten
ItzBoogieMan8 points8m ago
Ironically, I’ve never spent a dime on Starbucks Merch😂 expensive ass shit.
zoidberg30006 points8m ago
They flip them. I had a partner that used to do this and he would buy them with his discount and sell them for 60 to 100 bucks online.
iqueefkief1 points8m ago
hard agree
Indica-daddy2 points8m ago
Seconded!
caligirlthrowaway1041 points8m ago
Why though?
zambiers16 points8m ago
I find it ironic that I’ve made so many peppermint mochas in the four hours that I work today to the point that I’m actually kind of laughing at the fact that people don’t know you can get a peppermint mocha any time of year🤣
tregnoc8 points8m ago
if they waited in line since 2am I don't see the problem. Had they walked in the back door 5 minutes before open and did so then yeah that would be shitty. Ultimately it's a stupid fucking cup and your manager should have had a policy in place like most others do to prevent this. My old store we couldn't buy anything on launch day.
andersonm4997 points8m ago
We have a limit only one per style
nanobyte554 points8m ago
If you are not working (or even just on a break) you are considered a customer. If people, partners included, want to line up at 2 am to spend too much money on ugly cups, my average ticket metric thanks you.
5AV1OR4 points8m ago
I feel like there is no issue with the fact that partners were first in line they got no advantage at getting the cups first by being a partner. Should there be a general limit at least on launch day, probably. But definitely nothing specific to partners.
iqueefkief1 points8m ago
i agree about nothing specific to partners. customers shouldn’t be buying up multiples either.
linseeded3 points8m ago
So at my store baristas call dibs on cups before they get stocked (they have the cups in the back with their names on them for them to pay for later). Some of the designs never hit the floor. I never got the hype and the only Starbucks cup I own is a glow in the dark spikey one that got chipped and my shift said I could take home instead of tossed lmao. People are wild.
iqueefkief1 points8m ago
people tried this at our store and our manager said NAH. Lol, he was right to. i pulled one for my favorite regular because she can’t come in until 10:25pm most nights and it seemed like a less popular design anyway, but he wasn’t cool with that either. i did let her know odds were slim he’d allow it. she said, “well i’m rooting for you” 😂 love her to bits.
linseeded1 points8m ago
Aw that’s sad. :( Yeah I dunno if I really feel strongly about my coworkers doing that, though it does feel a bit unfair.
chinksauces3 points8m ago
nah. you want a cup? work there
sorry that partners who work and SLAVE blood sweat and tears for this shit corporate take all the cups. sucks to suck
Alternative_Exam37232 points8m ago
We limit 2 per customer at my store💁🏼♀️
iqueefkief1 points8m ago
that is insane your partners did that. my store manager wouldn’t allow it.
baristaaf12111 points8m ago
My SM saw this during the fall launch and immediately shut it down because of all the negative feedback we received. We were no longer allowed to hold cups for ourselves to purchase and we’re only allowed to go in at 5 in the morning to purchase whatever in our own time. As long as they didn’t hold cups on the side for themselves it should be okay but that’s a lot of cups to purchase…
Minute-General-20901 points8m ago
yes, should be limited two per person. I personally don't like the cups (even though I bought two in the past and a few mugs) buuuut I was courtesy enough to know to leave some for others. I hate it when stores don't allow a limit. When I'm register I don't allow it, I tell people "it's two per person" until my shift is over.
potterlyfe1 points8m ago
I have no problem with baristas getting first pick of cups especially if they've been waiting in line just as long as customers. Hell I use to put the order away myself most of the time and when we got cool cups, you best bet I claimed them before they even hit the floor. However I'm not clearing out the shelves to resell them. I hate that at starbucks as much as I hate reselling shoes or stupid Rae Dunn merch. I just think its shady to swoop in an short change the market just so you can make a quick buck without doing anything.
PartlyCloudyKid1 points8m ago
As long as you're not reselling them, take as many as you want 🤷 If they didn't do it, someone else would have, but the difference is that they don't work for the company making $15/hr. We had people literally tell us about their "cool idea" to resell the cups they just spent $200+ on. *That* upsets me. *That* is not the same as partners wanting all the new pretty cups.
wok3less1 points8m ago
wtf do they need 8-10 for?!?!
Traditional-Emu-14031 points8m ago
We limited to two per customer for the first day, your coworkers are going to deserve the way their coworkers talk about them now… that’s weird as hell. It’s plastic.
FanPleasant95461 points8m ago
We limit 2 holiday cups per customer
tacosubterfuge1 points8m ago
Our sm gives the cups 24 hours to be on the floor before we can set them aside.
Our mission is to provide everyone with access to large- scale community websites for the good of humanity. Without ads, without tracking, without greed.
