anyone else's shifts just full of sick partners? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by catpants243
Everyone on my shift right now is coughing and sick except 2 of us. 😵‍💫

I'm extremely pregnant, I don't want to get sick right now. The only thing not stressing me out is that they're all wearing masks but I miss the days of the pandemic where you absolutely couldn't come to work with these symptoms.

Yeah, ever since we don't get COVID pay anymore and have to use our own limited sick time I've noticed an influx of sick partners on the floor.

Not to mention the shame and threats of being fired or repercussions if you do call out, many are afraid and come to work sick.

I’ve literally been written up for “irregular attendance” for being sick….at most once a month I call out and I use my sick hours. This place is a joke
new_direction_ 23 points 8m ago
If this is the case please go to your DM. Your sick time is protected time, they shouldn’t be writing you up for using it.
BeardiesRule112 18 points 8m ago
My DM is one who told my SM to write me up…
friendlySkeletor 23 points 8m ago
Never be afraid to go past your dm. Talk to (i actually forget what this company calls hr so insert that here). If you're using protected hours and getting written up for it you can get starbucks for wrongful termination. It's their entire job to make sure stuff like that doesn't happen.
dontgiveah00t 7 points 8m ago
I appealed this with PCC and after 4 months they removed it from my file and had to apologize.
HarleySpicedLatte 5 points 8m ago
I would do my research. It's protected sick pay. Can't be documented unless it's found out you were lying
0x52and1x52 5 points 8m ago
Really? I still have 80 hours of COVID sick leave but I live in California so maybe that’s why.
Bellamermie 19 points 8m ago
Same at our store and I'm also very pregnant!
catpants243 [OP] 18 points 8m ago
Uhg this is the worst time to be pregnant and working with the public. I am stressed. I only have a month left of my pregnancy and I don't want to get sick 😭
Nyxxiiaa 15 points 8m ago
Yep a good majority of partners are either getting sick, fully in it, or still coughing and feeling shitty after being sick a week or two ago (I’m in the latter camp). I called out last week because I knew if I answered the Partner Symptom Checkin honestly I’d just get sent home anyway. Then this week my SM was talking to me and feeling sick somehow got brought up, he said he was pretty sick a week or two ago and I was like oh really? He even responded “yeah I’m probably the one who got you sick, but I just always come in while sick no matter what”…?! And told me I should too? Honestly in all my years I’ve called out from being sick maybe three times, I usually just suffered through it but not anymore, not after the pandemic (“”””after”””” ). Kinda left me speechless, admit you probably infected me and then shame me for calling out?! Wild stuff
catpants243 [OP] 12 points 8m ago
My SM and shifts have all been coming in coughing and sick. And when one of them tried to call out, because it "wasn't covid", they were told to come in still with a mask. My boyfriend and I came to the conclusion the pandemic had the opposite affect on how people deal with illness at work. Instead of taking it more seriously we're just ignoring everything that's "not covid" even though it still very well could be.

As someone who's immunocompromised right now it's extremely frustrating.
marigshu 9 points 8m ago
I feel this. If it’s not partners, it’s customers. I have a young infant at home whom I’m terrified of spreading RSV to. I wear my mask and hand wash constantly. And I don’t hold her until I’m out of my work clothes, but that’s all I can do 😔
catpants243 [OP] 4 points 8m ago
That's so terrifying. I'm so sorry. Having a young baby during winter is something I'm scared about too 😔
Pravum_Fera 9 points 8m ago
Our entire morning crew is sick rn and I was told the other day that they hired partners like crazy 👀
dekuflowers 5 points 8m ago
Five of us at my store are out with the flu so yeah, we’re dropping like flies. :(
Responsible_Snow7109 5 points 8m ago
I don't think there's any partners that are sick at my store currently. But if they are and they have to be there because they don't have any sick days and they need the money or if we're extremely short-handed and the manager makes them come in or something like that then they will be wearing a mask. But I noticed that my store recently, a ton of customers have been coming in extremely sick and coughing and sniffling and they're not wearing a mask
RareGull 3 points 8m ago
When I was an ssv if someone didn’t feel good, I strongly encouraged them to go home if they had sick hours and could afford it, unless they promised it was just allergies or something.

We have a few people that if they get respiratory illnesses could put them out of commission for months and make them incredibly sick, I don’t want that, and did my best to keep sick people home.
Responsible_Snow7109 2 points 8m ago
Well thank u for being that way! Because at my store, theres a coworker who has a very terrible immune system. She got sick like 3 different times within a month and stayed out for like a few days each time
ProfessionalNorth748 2 points 8m ago
I’m pregnant as well 7 months going on 8 and yea some of my co-workers are coughing. I don’t know if they’re sick but it sure as hell makes me anxious especially due to the fact that I got COVID last month.
catpants243 [OP] 2 points 8m ago
It's really frustrating because I get people feel they need to work through it for either money or feeling pressured to come in. But when you're in food service like we are and working closely with your coworkers the way we do, you can seriously just wipe out the whole store coming in sick.

I feel like we shouldn't be concerned about getting sick at work considering we're supposed to do check ins and go home if we have symptoms. But that's starbucks bandaid on the bigger problem of people still coming in because they need money and took away the covid pay.
GoodJibblyWibbly 2 points 8m ago
RSV and flu and to a similar extent covid are going Wild right now, we’re in for a rough season for all three illnesses unfortunately
catpants243 [OP] 2 points 8m ago
As someone who will have a newborn at the peak of it, it's really scary out here 😥
BeardiesRule112 1 points 8m ago
I just got written up for using my protected sick time. They don’t care.
poopylilbutt 1 points 8m ago
No. We are not allowed to come to work if we're sick and do not pass the symptom check.
catpants243 [OP] 1 points 8m ago
Yeah everyone ignores that at my store I guess.
RubySapphireSage 1 points 8m ago
I’m sick right now and have to find coverage I’m panicking my shift starts in a hour I’m so week I’ve been stuck in the bed since yesterday my fever is very high I don’t know what to do since we also don’t get Covid pay and a lot of partners are sick .
catpants243 [OP] 1 points 8m ago
You are not required to find coverage if you are too ill to go to work. It is on the ssv/manager to find coverage. Please don't be scared to call out if you're too ill to work. This is food service.
spicedtear 1 points 8m ago
(deleting for the corporate narks)
catpants243 [OP] 2 points 8m ago
That's ridiculous. Idk how they expect to not get every employee sick with people coming in with the FLU and RSV. Also pretty crazy considering we're in food service.
cherub_skies 1 points 8m ago
Yep. a lot of us are getting sick and I’m out with Covid 🫠
Firm_Friendship_9148 1 points 8m ago
I currently am out with the flu and have a temperature. I’m a little worried because this is my second time calling out but I found coverage for my first shift. How do sick hours accumulate here? I’m newer.
HarleySpicedLatte 1 points 8m ago
I can't remember the math calculation used but it's so much sick pay for per hours of work. Go to mypartnerinfo.com it should be on your paystub and your partner info section
Chromosomes23 1 points 8m ago
My store delt with all the calling out last week
catpants243 [OP] 5 points 8m ago
I would rather people be calling out than coming in sick and coughing just because it's not covid. It's like every other illness that isn't covid doesn't matter anymore, nevermind that it could still be covid and not showing up yet.
Traditional-Emu-1403 -9 points 8m ago
There’s a bug going around and people have had to work with colds for decades before Covid, you’ll be fine
catpants243 [OP] 11 points 8m ago
Well I'm fairly certain at least one partner DOES have covid considering their family member they live with just did.

Also, people just shouldn't be coming to work sick. It's literally company policy. That kind of thought process is how whole workplaces are wiped out with illness. But okay.
Traditional-Emu-1403 -8 points 8m ago
And then they can’t pay their bills and their family would suffer because they have the common cold. If they’re testing negative AND masking, you’ll be fine. Plenty of pregnant people get sick.
marigshu 9 points 8m ago
Don’t listen to this person invalidating. You can suffer severe complications with pregnancy just from getting the flu. If anyone at your store has it, I would take tamiflu for a week just in case.
catpants243 [OP] 2 points 8m ago
Thanks. I really hate when people downplay how serious some people have it with these illnesses.
catpants243 [OP] 6 points 8m ago
I'm not denying that but the company should be doing a better job of deterring people from coming in sick.
