Help! My manager is failing the store and won’t listen to anyone! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ggdabs
My manager has consistently allowed abusive behavior inside the store from shift leads and when someone brings it to his attention he blows them off. When he is there(rarely) he picks one or two baristas to be extremely critical to. He never sends out the schedule on time(usually 8-9 pm the night before the 6am first shift) there are several things broken inside the store such as the cold brew unit, speakers, etc. we opened the store after a year being closed and thought things would get better, things have only gotten worse. Not to mention manager has been gone for the past week and during the time he left the abusive shift leads in charge who closed the store early so they could hangout in the back and drink with the minor employees. What do I do?

Edit to include: 7 people including 2 shift leads have quit already. The other location he manages has been closed for a week because nobody comes in anymore. He constantly blurs lines such as having his best friend as a shift lead (she is one of the ones who quit because he unfairly put 3x the work on her).

Unionizing will take time. I think the store definitely should unionize, but with such a toxic and abusive culture at this store the OP probably needs to get out sooner than later.

I would quit. Put in for a transfer to another store. Look for work elsewhere. It’s the holidays so everybody is looking for help.

If you want to put in the time and effort to gather evidence to present to the district and regional managers you can do so.
Just know that nothing may change and there could be retaliation from those in the store.
To gather evidence, document everything.
-Write down Dates, times, who was present, what was done and said.
-Take discreet photos of the broken items with time stamps if possible
- If you live in a state where you can record without the others consent then consider recording (voice only is easiest and most discreet) the BS that is being said.
Then type up a brief report with descriptions of what has been going on, direct quotes from the recordings, and attach pictures.
Then do two things:
1) send an email to your district and regional managers requesting a confidential meeting regarding abuse and possible illegal activities (providing access to alcohol to minors) that are occurring. Make it clear it involves your manager and request this manager not be notified or be present at the meeting as you do not feel safe.
2) the day you meet with them (assuming they’ll meet with you), put in a report to HR (I can’t remember what Starbucks calls it).
That covers all your bases.

You'll have to escalate the concern to your regional or district manager and prepare to hop ship. I recommend unionizing.

Talk to your regional director. These are “unionizing” problems. They want to solve those. My regional director is pretty available and super nice. Good luck to ya!

Do you mind explaining how these would be considered unionizing issues? I don’t understand

They are problems that lead to unionization. They are looking to solve those problems to avoid unionizing. That’s my understanding.

I’m sorry you and the others are having to experience that! Reach out to your district manager or regional director and have who ever else agrees with you to step forward with their stories as well.

As for a broken store, anyone in store can use the my daily on the iPad to create work orders for maintenance:) Good luck, and I hope it gets better.
