I called Partner Resources this morning to make a formal complaint about the music.(self.starbucksbaristas)

We were told the morning of the holiday launch that we weren’t allowed to decorate *at all* (we decorate for every holiday at my store) because we needed to be completely inclusive.
Meanwhile the cups have Christmas trees, there’s a literal Christmas tree with presents under it to hold the gift cards, and they play jesusy Christmas songs.
Make. It. Make. Sense.
heyoliviasmith30 points8m ago
Per my DM, and NOT his words, this came from above him, that “we are not allowed to decorate because we have to respect the time and effort that the partners in Seattle put into making the holiday ‘Sirens Eye’ what it is.”
So I have to respect that stupid pop up, hard to assemble Christmas tree display they created? 🤨 we used to decorate very subtly every year until now. I think it’s BS. The customers love it too.
Vegan_Sweetie17 points8m ago
Christmas trees aren’t religious.
The Christmas tree was a European folk tradition for at least a thousand years before Christmas was ever a thing.
yungfroggie46 points8m ago
today it’s general association is catholic/christian christmas. i don’t see any menorahs holding up gift cards at starbucks
dallizzlee40 points8m ago
The point is that we were told that in order to be inclusive we weren’t allowed to decorate the store, and then the entire “holiday” theme of the store is Christmas.

My brother in christ they are called Christmas Trees today
OneRoseDark13 points8m ago
the letter T isn't religious either but crosses sure are.
[deleted]4 points8m ago
Oops my store breaking this we deck out we have elf on shelf with Starbucks apron and Christmas tree (we even partner with Salvation Army and have kids that are in need for Christmas)
wifeypoopoo1 points8m ago
YES!!! 4:30 in the morning and I have to hear about Jesus? Why can’t I decorate for my secular holiday? They are the ones bringing Jesus into it
jakhei172 points8m ago
don’t tell anyone, but my store unplugs it and plays our own music… shhhh
yaaasqueenie53 points8m ago
Lol are we not allowed to do that? Cause we do it every day of the year 😂
verdeuce38 points8m ago
No you aren’t lol
PopularWave83315 points8m ago
Shhh my store does it too
heyoliviasmith32 points8m ago
shhh we do it too 🤫 but I have a clean playlist with no explicit lyrics. I made everyone send me their favorite clean songs so we can enjoy our shifts together and vibe. It’s called “sbux aux cord” on Spotify with a strawberry cake pop picture. And “sbux throwbacks” which is all late 90’s and 2000’s music. 😁 makes the shift so much better. But I was getting so irritated with the Christmas playlist Starbucks has. I can’t do it.
PopularWave8338 points8m ago
For us it’s whoever gets too it first LOL but we all have specific playlists that are clean :)
xthefabledfox1 points8m ago
We also do it lol
Ordinary-Theory-8289157 points8m ago
Look I’m fine with the decorations and holiday drinks and stuff. But it is way too fuckimg soon for Christmas music. And you’re right, I was like “I feel like this is a little bit too explicitly religious for a Starbucks…”
C10ckw0rks61 points8m ago
There’s this one really stupid song that’s like a “Dear Mary you’re son is going to be ~” about Jesus and besides the religious part it’s just awful. There’s so many benign unreligious christmas songs why is that on there
Binx_da_gay_cat24 points8m ago
Mary Did You Know
yvesagain15 points8m ago
I grew up christian (not anymore) and even *we* hated that song
C10ckw0rks15 points8m ago
It’s arguably one of the worst songs we’ve ever featured
miniinovaa5 points8m ago
i only like the pentatonix version of that song haha and im atheist
WingsofFlight2 points8m ago
Have to heavily agree about it being way too soon.
EuniceBKidden [OP]93 points8m ago
What makes it worse is if we change the station it just switches it back in like 2 songs.
PapaJey10 points8m ago
Yup. It’s so annoying.
friendlySkeletor52 points8m ago
America has normalized Christianity so much that religious christian music for two months a year is basically seen as normal now. If it wasn't put on people would call it the latest battle in the war on christmas. That or they'd call us snowflakes again for complaining. But gods i hope it changes, it'll be so funny.
Outrageous_Name392152 points8m ago
I unliked everything! Too early too non inclusive. Not sure if it worked. Here's hoping!!
jupiter_bug39 points8m ago
If they play that song about the dying mom and her shoes, I will absolutely throw a fit in the store
twistedstarfall11 points8m ago
Just when I think I've forgotten this one
bigghostb00ty7 points8m ago
Worst fucking song ever.
overturned2329 points8m ago
My DM was in today and was making sure we were using a starbucks approved playlist cuz it sounded too religious.
claretamazon29 points8m ago
I feel the same. Just glad my Ear Loops block it out.
photo_rain4 points8m ago
Ur allowed to wear those?! I want to so bad
claretamazon14 points8m ago
May be up to your store. I have ADHD and it helps me function so my SM allows me to.
photo_rain11 points8m ago
Yeah same adhd and on the spectrum - I get sooo overstimulated at work
dazedandconfusedhere13 points8m ago
If you actively see a doctor you can get accommodations pretty easily! Then it’s not up to your SM if you can wear them or not
friendlySkeletor12 points8m ago
Oh yeah! Im both as well and have extremely sensitive hearing. My loops are the only reason i can even function at work. I lost them once and had to go home early bc i got so overstimulated i had a panic attack lol
PopularWave8332 points8m ago
Lol my SM would never, she only cares abt times nothing else.
HarleySpicedLatte5 points8m ago
Yes. If your manager makes a fuss get a doc's note and file a formal request.

I just want a "Hippopotamus for Christmas" to play. I'll listen to it any day of the year. The rest of the songs can suck it.
Why does the player switch back to the Xmas stuff after 2 songs? It was doing the same type of thing Monday morning in Halloween. I wanted to time warp before it got busy. Le sigh.
juiceyluicy10 points8m ago
There was Christian-y country music for the playlist like two months ago? I just don’t understand how the selection for the music works. Some playlists literally have less than 20 songs. Some songs mention sex. Some mention god. I don’t understand how those pass through and make it onto store playlists. I wish there was a way to make it default to a different playlist in the store.
WingsofFlight9 points8m ago
Religious Xmas music? Not had that here in the UK, just some really random Christmas songs I have never heard before. One came on today and I just stared at the ceiling so confused, I still have no idea what it was supposed to be. And then we get the normal cheesy songs mixed in.

WingsofFlight5 points8m ago
I will be honest, I don't really pay attention to the lyrics. But now it has caught my curiosity.
dontcry20221 points8m ago
I mean that's a pretty explicitly religious example. But anything about Santa, "All I Want for Christmas is You", chestnuts roasting over an open fire, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman.... etc idk all those are pretty secular and just give a general holiday season vibe
ketchupsnumberonefan6 points8m ago
IM SAYING! I heard silent night and some song about Bethlehem last night… it’s weird af
WingsofFlight2 points8m ago
What on earth? And here in the UK we have all the overly cheerful Christmas cheesy songs.
emotional-trauma5 points8m ago
the hero we all deserve 🫶🏼
Broad-Flounder-49714 points8m ago
I have religious trauma from Christianity, am a witch and atheist, but my absolute favorite Christmas songs are the religious ones 🥹. They are so beautiful.
Afta-math111 points8m ago
Witch AND atheist🤔
sofaye-go4 points8m ago
witchcraft is a practice not a religion. some witches work with deities others don’t
Alefur4 points8m ago
Im dreading the Christmas music. Meanwhile juice world just played in the lobby. Im okay with this.
Worldly_Cucumber_6924 points8m ago
Reasons for why I connect to Bluetooth when I get on the floor 🙂
mindless_blaze3 points8m ago
Even in the off season, they used to play this Toby Mac (Christian pop star) song, non stop. I was shook to hear it. The lyrics don't say "God" or "Jesus", but does say "Lord". The song is "Everything" by Toby Mac.
DaybreakNightfall2 points8m ago
Parking lot two versions back to back over and over. I thought I had died and gone to hell.
Sammiche2 points8m ago
The partners at my store go out of their way to be accommodating to me re: Christmas music, since I'm the only one who doesn't celebrate Christmas.
I feel like I kind of abused that generosity last year by using my veto power until the second week of December, so this year I've resolved to go with whatever is playing, no matter what.
I've also changed medications in the last year and started wearing earplugs this past spring, so I doubt there will be any issues.
Basically I just wanted to comment to say that my coworkers are great people. 👍
francescugh2 points8m ago
I agree.. I feel like there’s plenty of fun, festive songs that anyone can enjoy, no matter their religious beliefs.
nightimevil2 points8m ago
I feel this so much. I can get down and vibe to some songs about Santa, and I'm very open to other songs about different holidays (I mean, there has to be some, right?). But the religious songs back to back are kinda killing me.
BoatAccomplished82292 points8m ago
i just think it’s kinda funny
HanatabaRose1 points8m ago
call the customer support line as a customer with your complaint theyll get on it so much faster and then fire whoever came up with the idea 🤣
WestPossibility19091 points8m ago
Who tf made a Halloween playlist with 6 songs on it and then makes it play all day. If I hear the monster mash one more time I’m only to cry

dontcry20221 points8m ago
Yeah it is so Christian I had thoughts in the back of my mind while working like "What if there was Hanukkah music? Would Starbucks split the playlist between Christmas and Hanukkah music?"
