Is it just me or is Starbucks worse than most service industry jobs?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by linseeded
Like maybe I’m getting old/tired/burnt out but I feel like my past customer service etc jobs were not as bad as Starbucks…? And I feel like everyone I know who works at Starbucks is miserable and wants to quit. Am I crazy or is Starbucks Bad to work for?
eckinz55 points8m ago
this job is awful. i only stay bc i love working with my friends
BlacksmithOwn90829 points8m ago
This is definitely a different view than most but while the job isn’t perfect it’s better than my last customer service job. My manager is great and everyone o work with is great. Like I said this job isn’t the best but it’s much better than hypocritical managers who yelled at me if I had to use the restroom once during an 8 hour shift and a job that didn’t follow break laws.
Icky1389 points8m ago
my starbucks is the job that doesn’t follow break laws.

Prior to Starbucks I worked server jobs and this was the first job to ever make me cry , I keep telling myself that the benefits are worth it
Veloci-Tractor27 points8m ago
totally, it's not even comparable. my previous jobs are varied and include a lot of customer service, ranging from manager of a dispensary (so im used to getting yelled at) all the way to bike messenger (supposedly one of the hardest most dangerous jobs in the world) and like
none of them have shit on the siren
but it's not the customers honestly, it's the corpo culture and the managers

HA facts my SM made me want to quit my first week
linseeded [OP]5 points8m ago
This is so validating ugh I feel like I’m going crazy but god the benefits are good

Its the customer entitlement that is the issue. That makes it stressful.
DustbinFunkbndr17 points8m ago
Worst customer base on the planet and awful company culture. It isn’t the cute, romanticized coffee shop it used to be.
Okdevcon4 points8m ago
Like others are saying, some stores have great teams, which go a long way. Benefits are good, but my store is a nightmare mainly because customers expect so much and don’t really tip at all.
reipothos16 points8m ago
panda express can never be topped in terms of my past jobs. shit sucked mega ass. so far at starbies I have ended up at a great store with great co workers and great management, its my favorite job so far out of em all but I know that’s atypical:(
cats_with_tentacles9 points8m ago
Starbucks has been way better to me than any of my other service jobs, but it highly depends on your location. I got lucky with a great store
Hazel_is_Trans8 points8m ago
Why do you think we are unionizing
Traditional-Emu-14036 points8m ago
It’s awful but I also think it’s the customers getting worse. The pandemic has left people even more narcissistic and shitty than before, they lost social skills and gained entitlement. We are just currently dealing with that
plantainpapii0 points8m ago
Easiest and most gratifying way to deal with customers is to just ask if they want a refund.
Oftentimes they say “no” and shut up. If they say “yes”, congrats: one less drink to make.
Ya’ll take too much bullshit from customers. Can’t be me. Maybe it’s the culture of the environment my store is located in, but you cant just talk out of pocket and not expect me to hoe you out in public.
mulberrybby5 points8m ago
I only stay for the benefits
Remarkable-Item-87075 points8m ago
I’ve worked at places before starbucks that had no benefits at all. I kinda view starbucks as a 8/10 job that has great benefits, but at the same time terrible customers and mediocre work flow/structure. I can see most people’s arguments to increase our barista wages. I consider that maybe in the long run if they were able to increase wages, Starbucks will unfortunately be very competitive, accept more college graduates and not so much teens if starbucks increase their pay. Not having a lot of job availability for teens starting out and more props to people in their 20’s. Idk, it’s just a thought.
TarantulaTeeth132 points8m ago
Atleast 25% of my staff are Minors at my current location 😭 but for the most part they train well and it's great experience in getting you out of your comfort zone. For me that was the customer interaction. I'm a pro now lol 😆 *cue tiny anxiety violin*

The bullying is systemic in Starbucks
HarleySpicedLatte1 points8m ago
Keep good notes.
absoluteemly4 points8m ago
To me, it's not. It's so much better than my last job. This job actually has good benefits, a lenient callout policy, lots of breaks during your shift, and decent pay. But that's just in my opinion.
Ordinary-Theory-82893 points8m ago
It’s not Starbucks, it’s the times. I’ve been in this industry my whole career, and Starbucks is definitely the best of the places I’ve worked, but I agree everything is getting worse
jazzysoranio3 points8m ago
It depends. I’ve had other food service jobs, and I definitely don’t miss going home smelling like old burnt meat and grease. A lot of it depends on your specific store too. I moved locations and reduced my hours and it made a world of difference. I actually started liking work at Starbucks again.
linseeded [OP]2 points8m ago
I started at one of the highest volume stores in Chicago then moved to a different high volume store in a smaller city 😬 I feel like the stores are specifically making it worse. Maybe I need to transfer
jazzysoranio2 points8m ago
Yeah, if there’s actually a good one to transfer to at least inquire about it. I was lucky that there was a less busy store the exact same distance as my old super busy store, And they needed someone asap so I jumped for it. And I was so happy I did because my mood immediately changed and I went from being the “scary” shift supervisor to the “fun” and “chill” one. It was like a night and day difference. And not just for me, it meant I was giving off a more positive energy to the people around me too. I hope you have good luck finding a better environment. We all deserve to be working somewhere where we can actually flourish for our own sakes and for the sake of those around us.
RedDeadGurl3 points8m ago
I used to work at a vet clinic, and I have to say that was my worst experience with people so far. I feel like the customers in general at my store have been pretty decent aside from people complaining about shortages or just driving away at the speaker before I’m done. I do agree that it seems like a LOT of my fellow partners hate their lives and are kind of miserable to work with
TarantulaTeeth133 points8m ago
The store/SM/Crew make a difference. I was originally hired in 2013, worked till 2016 and moved on to a different customer service job. I came back a year ago because they finally paid well and it's a decent wage for my area. I promoted quick with experience and that helps but honestly it is a taxing job.
I've cut my availability 2 times since I've been back a year and 6 months ago, transferred to a different store because my last store wasn't great. This new store/SM/Crew is so much better and we are literally the 5th highest volume store in the PNW.
Maybe try looking into a change in hours or even shifts, if you can? And maybe a transfer to a new store. I went from shifting opens at my last store to shifting close at my current store and it's such a Stark difference, even with the significant increase in business. Good luck!
linseeded [OP]1 points8m ago
I changed to closing and that’s helped some
majik_rose2 points8m ago
Lmao I’m just the opposite. Maybe retail is better but if you think this sucks, try working at a restaurant/food place. This is definitely the best job I’ve had so far IMO
linseeded [OP]1 points8m ago
I’ve worked restaurants and fast food! (Waitress, hostess, fast food, pizza and dishwasher). They were better than starbs.
majik_rose2 points8m ago
Maybe I just had bad luck then 😂 in high school I worked at Noodles & Co, management was trash there, I remember I wouldn’t get breaks unless they needed to improve profit by having less ppl on the clock 😬
linseeded [OP]1 points8m ago
Yikeeeessss sounds lowkey illegal 😬 I’m sorry you went through that!!
8483412 points8m ago
I worked at chick-fil-a before i worked at starbucks. I would have to say cfa was worse
Foreign_Service31022 points8m ago
I worked at Starbucks for upwards of a year and now work at a more stereotypical fast food place. My biggest thing is my current job doesn't require what Starbucks calls "costumer connections". I think this is what made Starbucks so tiring. It was nice smelling like coffee and having a more "glamorous" job compared to my peers, but my mental health is doing so much better.
linseeded [OP]1 points8m ago
The pressure to be quick and efficient but also disgustingly nice to customers is a big part of it, you’re so right.
PartyAnything34082 points8m ago
these comments are so concerning. i love my job. my manager is great, my coworkers are kinda untrained and gossipy but i’m into coaching and leading so i don’t mind helping out extra, in my three years i’ve only had maybe 3 karen’s, and i actually like all positions minus css so i actually like it here it’s the only job i’ve had that i’ve really enjoyed and stuck with
sten452 points8m ago
It is not just you
SNES1822 points8m ago
It most certainly is. I did retail/customer service for about 15 years. Starbucks was the absolute worst job in that category.
nickypng2 points8m ago
I worked at Starbucks for my first job for a few years. I've worked 4-5 other service jobs (barista elsewhere, cashier, bartender) and Starbucks still stands out as the worst job I've ever worked. The worst guests, worst management, worst store culture, worst protection for their partners. I don't know how they retain as many people as they do.
Agreeable-Ad72252 points8m ago
I like my job :/ my coworkers and my manager are pretty great
