i’ve been at starbucks for a year this month, and i love my job and what i do, but recently it just fucking sucks. the people i work with are just kinda shit heads tbh. we had a “holiday meeting” which was basically just our manager telling us what horrible partners we are + snacks lol. but during this meeting she started talking about how we take way too long of bathroom breaks (for context i have a chronic illness that affects my digestive system). she suggested “bathroom timers” i’m not sure if this was a joke or a threat but it really fucking hurt. and then one of my coworkers was like “yeah that was really pissing me off today” and turned her head and looked at me… at that point i was holding in tears until i got to my car and just sobbed. i don’t understand how people can be so mean. i get that me going to the bathroom more frequently and for longer amounts of times than a normal person would can be kinda inconvenient but what do you want me to do about it?? anyways i tested positive for covid so i’ve only worked one shift since then and i’m really scared to go back on monday. any advice?? i’ve already filed a complaint but i’m sure that won’t go anywhere /:

I'm sorry coworkers can be so rough. I have a chronic illness and have had people make snide comments as well. Hang in there.

people are horrible when you have chronic illness in general. they can’t see it so there is no connection to empathy for them.

exactly. they just see it as an inconvenience for them and it’s rlly hurtful because what abt me?? what abt the fact that i’ve literally SHIT MY PANTS ON THE CLOCK?!?!? it’s like they think i chose this when reality if no one had to know about it i wouldn’t tell them because it’s embarrassing, but the only way people believe me is if i go into detail and even then i guess they don’t believe me so whatever ig

you can ask your doctor for an accomadation letter stating that you will need more bathroom lenience due to medical reasons. they don’t NEED to know any more than that. after awhile, you will learn to set short firm boundaries because no one will care about your health other than you, and you have to look after yourself. they WILL let you shit yourself on the clock, it’s happened.

Fuck them. Literally shaming you over a disability you have absolutely no control over. First of all this is in violation of OSHA restroom rights. YOU NEED THE TIME TO GO TO THE RESTROOM. YOU DESERVE TIME AND ACCESS TO A RESTROOM. Second, they suck and I'm so sorry you had this experience. I'll need to find a link but a restroom timer sounds sorta illegal and used FOR YOU SPECIFICALLY would be unacceptable considering your bodily needs. I cannot stress how much they are shit human beings for shaming you during a workplace meeting.

thank u i rlly needed validation that i wasn’t overreacting cause like they never specifically mentioned me but like everyone knew who they were talking abt. idk it just rlly humiliated me and wasn’t fair at all. and i messaged the girl who was “rlly pissed off” abt it and she left me on read so idk rlly know what to do in this situation i feel like all my coworkers hate/ are annoyed w me and i’m rlly embarrassed

https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/standardinterpretations/1998-04-06-0 I am a rando on the internet with vague legal experience but a timer for someone with a disability that directly impacts their digestive system feels like an "unreasonable restriction," (The employer may not impose unreasonable restrictions on employee use of the facilities.). Also how the fuck are you supposed to address the "rly pissed off" partner if they're just being an asshole and not letting you address the matter. Which you would be able to clarify because you have a legitimate reason. It's not your fault if the store isn't staffed appropriately. As long as they know about your disability, this falls on management to MANAGE the store and their team appropriately, not yours to somehow magically overcome your disability for ✨ Starbucks ✨

thank you so much i rlly appreciate this (: and it’s especially frustrating because i always have someone cover me when i use the bathroom but i guess they think i’m just on my phone??? like they said at the meeting “we all know when you’re in the bathroom for 10 min ur just playing on ur phone” and i’m just like yeah i’m on my phone lmaoo but i’m also shitting my brains out so go fuck urself. im just so frustrated with this whole thing and tbh more frustrated with my coworkers than my manager cause i know she’s actually not gonna hand me a timer cause i’ll go off but im just rlly embarrassed and honestly AFRAID to use the bathroom now cause i know they’re all looking down on me /:

NAH FOO THIS IS ALSO HARASSMENT https://www.eeoc.gov/harassment (Harassment becomes unlawful where 2) the conduct is severe or pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive.) WHY DO THEY SUCK SO BAD. Your coworkers are also taking their job way too seriously?? Ma'am this is a STARBUCKS. If people have to wait longer for their drink they're not gonna fucking die. You need to use the restroom just like everybody else, you ALSO HAVE A DISABILITY WHAT. Full support for you homie.

You should get documentation from your doctor about it, you should be covered by the ADA

You should of said “some of us including myself have digestive issues and would rather not shit all over the floor. Do you want to mop up my shit (enter name)?”
