Any tips for a struggling newbie barista? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by RubidiumRB
I used to work at a Safeway Starbucks a year ago, and three weeks ago I started training at a drive thru and walk up location (different from the cafe and drive thru store I’d be working at). I did pretty good there but Monday and Tuesday I started at my actual store and felt so overwhelmed and lost. Like nothing could have prepared me for the amount of overwhelm I felt. And since then I’ve been sick and I’ve missed 2 shifts. (I’ve been down with fatigue and sore throat with the occasional cough and a scratchy voice) I’m going back tomorrow at 7 am, and I’m so anxious and nervous. I did not expect how much stress and overwhelm would come with this. I feel underprepared and I feel as though I’m more of an inconvenience at this location, like I should know more and should be more efficient. My training is officially done and I still feel this way. Any tips or advice? I’m also going to stress to my shift lead tomorrow how embarrassed I am for being sick and how this isn’t like me. I truly am a hard work and I feel like I’m totally failing. Am I alone in these feelings?

Hi there! I'm also a fairly new barista (4 months) something that i noticed that helped me is taking evening/closing shifts. They're usually a lot more calmer (especially week days) and in turn it's easier to bar. Another thing I would strongly recommend is just to ask for help when you need it. At my store all the shifts say just to ask for help. It's the best thing someone can do becuase while it might inconvenience to someone at least there's someone with a bit more experience helping you and that way things get out faster. If you get overwhelmed somewhere you should ask the shift if you can go somewhere that doesn't overwhelm you. Like restock, or a trash run, or cleaning cafe; something like that. Or if what you're have if what you're having trouble with remembering how to make the drinks one of my shifts told me when they were new they would just go on Quizlet and play them 😂. Also the biggest thing is to be confident. When you're confident you get into the zone and it's easier to do things (but don't be arrogant they're different). I hope this helps! Try not to stress too much :).
