No TikTok agreement (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by jadendigitalart
My store randomly made us sign an agreement to not film and post tiktoks in the store *or* about the store/customers while we’re employed.
I don’t have a tiktok - but I was just wondering if anyone else has had to do this? It felt really strange

I’ve worked in HR for decades and this is quite common. You can refuse to sign it and they can terminate employment if they choose — depends on your state and employment laws, though.

With the number of TikToks made by partners, I would be surprised if they didn’t do this.

No such agreement in our store but then I can’t see anyone actually filming a TikTok.

It’s related to the social media policy, which is in the employee handbook, which you were supposed to sign that you read it when you were hired. The right to free speech doesn’t apply to your job unless you work for the government.

You are correct.

You can always refuse to sign, then risk the consequences if you do post vids regardless. Considering how baristas on Tiktok act I actually support this IMO.

No. Plus you can't be forced to sign anything. You can always refuse to sign.

Also your hourly job doesn't have authority over what you do off the clock.

Jobs can totally fire and discipline you for posting about Starbucks on or off the clock (at least in the United States). They cannot give you corrective action if you are posting about the working conditions, such as pay or unsafe work environments. But if you’re making TikTok’s making fun of customers (for example), then they totally can, even if you made it while you weren’t at work. Also keep in mind the the First Amendment **only** applies to the *Government*. Private companies can limit speech which is why Twitter used to be able to ban people for violating their policies.

But there are barista’s filming while clocked in making these videos.

I’m sure it’s already not allowed technically but since baristas have been getting fired for making jokes about the crusty custies.

You shouldn’t be making tiktoks at work anyway. Unruly customers, or wrongdoings in the store? Absolutely. Dumb drink recipes and even dumber dances? No.

Is it a store agreement or a Starbucks agreement. We all ready have a social media one. This leaves me confused

I was in one of my partners' TikToks that got over 6 million views, and after that our SM told us not to be making them on the floor. In my defense I was not on the clock, I was just there to get my drink!
