Ngl some of y’all are tweaking a little too hard ab the Christmas music playlist(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by majik_rose
Saw a couple posts about ppl complaining about how “religious” the Christmas playlist is. Today was my first day at work since holiday launch. And in the 3.5 hours I’ve been here I’ve heard three, maybe four Christmas songs that could be considered religious. It’s not that bad guys and I think some of y’all are overreacting. Also, not to be that person but Christmas is in origin a Christian holiday (yes ik some of the practices originate from paganism spare me the semantics), so a few classic Christmas songs about little baby Jesus or whatever can really only be expected. I get that not everyone likes Christmas or Christmas music, but it’s definitely not bad enough to be filing a complaint with corporate.

I can't even hear the music at my store
lovebymistake120 points8m ago
I’ve been w the company for 3 years and I’ve never heard as much Jesus talk as this playlist. They usually opt for more secular holiday music but they didn’t this year for whatever reason. At our store it’s every other song that’s extremely religious and a couple customers have made comments ab it.
majik_rose [OP]-81 points8m ago
Maybe your store has a different playlist but it really doesn’t seem to be that many songs. I don’t wanna be mean but tbh I feel like a lot of ppl are being overly sensitive to anything that could be possibly construed as religious
lovebymistake89 points8m ago
I’m not going to disagree but this is a group for baristas to rant or express their feelings, so of course you’ll see a lot of that. In my experience, a lot of baristas are LGBTQ+, neurodivergent or disabled, a lot of whom have been hurt by major religions. I’d understand this post much more in r/Starbucks but this sub is specifically for us to rant.
sneakpeekbot4 points8m ago
Here's a sneak peek of /r/starbucks using the $1 of the year!
It’s been so chaotic at my store I didn’t even hear music. We’re down a hot bar and DM said no to shutting down mobiles, DT OR cafe😭
PapaJey62 points8m ago
DM’s actually have their heads up their asses. I’m sorry that sounds miserable. Tbh I’ve been over it. If I’m 4-parting peak because of a call off, I’m locking the cafe. I haven’t gotten in trouble yet, and I’m ready to go off if they have anything to say.

Nah, if I'm on the floor, I refuse to let any Christmas play. It tries to switch back a lot and I just change it right back to our favorites. Once it's actually closer to Christmas, I'll ease up, but I refuse to listen to it for 8 hours a day for months. If I didn't have the ability to switch the music, I would for sure be sending in a complaint too.
ElijahLordoftheWoods20 points8m ago
This! It’s that it starts so damn early and that it’s the shitty Christmas music. There’s ZERO Buble on this and the stuff from good artists aren’t the good songs. There’s literally hours of the Rat Pack Sings Christmas but there’s only like 2 songs of that in here.
lightcolorsfly67 points8m ago
we can not change the playlist no matter how hard we try 😭 we change it, it’ll be changed for about 4-5 songs, then go back to the christmas playlist of its own freewill 😁
Iamdecaptainnoww28 points8m ago
Our store playlist does this too, but with jazz! And it always begins with Sinatra

miniinovaa52 points8m ago
for me, its weird to highlight christianity but not Judaism or Kwanzaa practices.. also the fact they told us we couldnt decorate that much this year because they basically dont wanna exclude anyone, but the music is fine? the christmas trees on the cups and present decorations are ok? Odd...

edit: to add, it may not be bad enough for you to file a complaint, but it is bad enough to the person who did it, so im not sure why you think your input is necessary considering it already happened, and it is just your opinion /nm
majik_rose [OP]-18 points8m ago
At the end of the day it’s a privately run corporation and it’s up to them which holidays they celebrate and how, but I definitely agree that a company that claims to care so much about diversity and inclusion could do more to show it
miniinovaa43 points8m ago
Just cuz it’s privately owned doesn’t mean people, employees or customers, don’t have the right to complain about their business practices
Hyperioncorp45 points8m ago
put on store favorites the moment i heard ave maria 🤭 ill stop complaining about overly christian music when they put one song about hannukah on the playlist
smc64231 points8m ago
Ave Maria is absolutely not what I want or expect to hear when I’m at Starbucks.
ElijahLordoftheWoods36 points8m ago
Christmas is a co-oped PAGAN holiday [YULE] that got Jesus shoved into it. Don’t erase thousands of years of history.
majik_rose [OP]-27 points8m ago
As I said in my original post I’m aware of the origin of the holiday. As I also said, I honestly don’t really care about a takeover that happened literally thousands of years ago (especially since no one really celebrates Yule anymore).
elz-belles38 points8m ago
You do know pagan people still exist…right?
ElijahLordoftheWoods27 points8m ago
Well you’re very wrong there lol
White_Petal53424 points8m ago
There are almost 1 million Pagans in the United States alone… But screw those people right?
majik_rose [OP]-12 points8m ago
As compared to the over 300 million ppl who live in the us? That’s really not that many. Not to mention that a lot of those pagans probably aren’t gnashing their teeth at the sound of Christmas songs
Icky13820 points8m ago
wow.
ElijahLordoftheWoods19 points8m ago
OP do you also dismiss the existence of Jewish people? Or gingers? Or trans people? It’s called a minority honey.
Also people like you are *exactly* why many of us do hate this time of year. You dismiss the very existence of the *entire* reason you even have a holiday to begin with. Y’all stole it. 100%. If you’d been polite about saying you didn’t want the discourse then you wouldn’t have gotten called out. But you just had to be dismissive about it.
MonoCandy15 points8m ago
What is wrong with you
moon_light5233 points8m ago
so because they’re a minority that means they don’t matter….?? make it make sense
Markedsoultheif34 points8m ago
Are we talking about the guest DJ playlist belonging to Alicia Keys? Because it’s definitely not our normal holiday playlist.
majik_rose [OP]4 points8m ago
Tbh I’m not sure, there very well could be a few different playlists considering
OMGitsJewelz33 points8m ago
Idc that much, but it is the worst xmas playlist I've heard in 8 years at the Bux...it's awful
majik_rose [OP]1 points8m ago
I would give anything to hear some Kelly Clarkson or Ariana instead of cheap covers or ancient songs fr 🥲
SNES18232 points8m ago
Stfu. Christmas music blows and not everyone wants to hear it. It’s also funny how you call the holiday’s Pagan roots semantics. I’m sure you have tons of friends.
elz-belles19 points8m ago
Christmas is literally Yule with a new name but people forget about that because white supremacy works.

Y’all can hear the music? I’m usually so in my own head i can’t hear shit unless it’s in my ear on the headsets lmao
elz-belles30 points8m ago
NoT tO bE tHaT pErSoN- you are in fact that person, congratulations.
Iamdecaptainnoww29 points8m ago
Today there were straight up hymns playing. That’s my main issue cuz that just seems a bit much.
majik_rose [OP]-2 points8m ago
Yes, I would agree hymns are bad. I was fully expecting to come into work and here “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” and oh come all ye faithful and shit but it was pretty generic Christmas songs
Iamdecaptainnoww6 points8m ago
I’m like 80% sure I heard those too, but they all kind of blend together after 20 min so idk.
Sirmarchboy2228 points8m ago
Honestly, I hate it cause in one 8 hour shift I I heard the grinch played 12 times
Sarenord28 points8m ago
5 minutes into my shift yesterday people in the cafe were visibly awkward about the rendition of ave Maria playing, and literally every time our music would flip to the Christmas playlist it wouldn't be more than 3 songs before there was something playing that was uncomfortably religious for most everyone in the cafe
romanianhopscotch25 points8m ago
Ave Maria is a bizarre choice to me, that is like straight up Catholic Church music. Christmas has become secular enough that it seems pretty weird to play straight up hymns in a coffee shop. 😐
majik_rose [OP]-4 points8m ago
Yeah that one made me wonder if there’s a ✨special✨ playlist bc that one is pretty outright Christian, catholic even. We were pretty busy all morning so maybe I missed it but I would’ve felt a bit uncomfortable if I heard that one (not uncomfortable enough to make a stink ab it tho)
haleslyons24 points8m ago
I just find it a little ridiculous that we weren’t even allowed to use the term “Secret Santa” for last years partner gift exchange but for some reason the company that doesn’t want to exclude anyone during the holiday season is ONLY playing hymns and other Christmas themed songs
majik_rose [OP]-8 points8m ago
Im convinced there must be a specialty religious bullshit Christmas playlist I have not heard these hymns you speak of 😅
mangotangoafterdark23 points8m ago
christmas is a christian holiday… i was raised atheist and those songs have always annoyed me hearing and having to sing them in school but like what do you expect???
miniinovaa16 points8m ago
christmas isnt the only winter holiday... but its the only one starbucks highlights. that itself is weird enough for me
majik_rose [OP]6 points8m ago
I definitely agree that Starbucks could have more diverse holiday representation. A couple gift cards with menorahs doesn’t really cut it :/
ElijahLordoftheWoods8 points8m ago
You wonder why they do f but you make comments about how minority religions don’t matter…
[deleted]1 points8m ago

majik_rose [OP]8 points8m ago
Exactly! I’m an ex-catholic with quite a bit of religious trauma, so believe me I know it can be upsetting to encounter religious stuff in a secular environment, but it is still a largely Christian holiday, even if plenty of non-religious ppl celebrate.
francescugh10 points8m ago
those who open and dont have much traffic in the cafe for the first few hours of their shift prob realize it more than those who work during peak rush times
majik_rose [OP]0 points8m ago
Probably. Tbh I’m usually too busy maladaptively daydreaming to pay that much attention to the music, also my brain just likes music I don’t typically think too hard ab what the music is lmao
lilgian17 points8m ago
I don’t like the playlist but it’s because it’s bad! Why would Alicia keys choose these songs ? So many holiday classics are missing !
majik_rose [OP]3 points8m ago
My least favorite part of working during the holidays is listening to cheap off-brand Christmas music 🥲 I remember my job last year had a god-awful playlist, I was ready to quit if I had to hear a cover of Mariah Carey one more fucking time 😭😭
lilgian12 points8m ago
Right ! Stop with the covers!! We want the real Mariah!
pettingneos5 points8m ago
at least it's not muppets christmas 🤪
diphenhydranautical8 points8m ago
muppets x john denver christmas is my favorite holiday album 😢
pettingneos1 points8m ago
the first 3 listen throughs are good... after that 😅
ichxnel4 points8m ago
Y’all are really zoned in to be able to be aware of the music? 😭🤣 can’t relate
witcheselementality4 points8m ago
Growing up Christian, I don't mind the jesus songs. Especially living in Texas rn. Everyone is overly religious. I just wish I could throw in some pagan music as well lmao
lunayoshi4 points8m ago
Throw some Loreena McKennitt or Enya into the mix and I'd be a happy camper. $10 says the Bux would get complaints from customers though.
Blocked_ID1 points8m ago
I don’t care it’s just funny to me that the company that was canceled for canceling Christmas or whatever is literally playing Ave Maria
majik_rose [OP]4 points8m ago
Yeah that one is super weird, especially since Ave Maria isn’t even a Christmas song 🤨
Chromosomes231 points8m ago
Our store manager always puts it on the Christmas playlist and it annoys my baristas so I turn it down low enough they can’t hear it and holiday this year isn’t the same.

I'm an atheist and have worked retail or some form of it for 12 years, and I'd take Mary Did You Know over All I Want For Christmas Is You any day.
obmar-belac-3 points8m ago
Great post . I agree . Still. I wouldn’t mind that Gucci Mane Christmas album 1, 2, & 3 on dere.
Traditional-Emu-1403-16 points8m ago
Exactly. Do they think all music about a religious holiday is going to be non secular?
Illustrious-Wolf6516-13 points8m ago
The horror, CHRISTmas songs about Jesus CHRIST 🤣
capsule_of_anxiety1-10 points8m ago
