Wtf is a ten minute rule had a “former partner” or so he says come in 6 minutes after close and I informed him we were closed where I was met with him becoming increasingly aggressive saying I’m a liar and that he worked for the company for 5 years and that I’m just lazy when I have never heard of this rule and am a 2 year Ssv plus if you worked for Starbucks why you gotta be such a dick I barely get enough time to close as is now get out of my store.

the so-called “10 minute rule” is that (customers believe) we’re still open 10 minutes before our official open time and 10 minutes after our official close time. and as a closing SSV: nope, I’m locking the doors exactly at close and we’re not letting you in.

It isn't a rule, more a general standard for most restaurants, that customers have a little leeway in the time it takes them to leave once you are supposed to be closed, and while they are using that leeway some places continue to serve customers with the explicit agreement that they must leave once served. I'm guessing that's what this Chernobyl grade nuclear douche-nozzle was referring to, and you have no obligation to abide by this "standard", serve anyone after closing time once any remaining customers leave, nor serve remaining customers themselves. Your first priority for closing should be to lock the doors at closing time precisely, to prevent stuff like this from happening. That way no one else can come in but people can still leave. Its a safety/security concern for closing at night for employees and for money handling.

This used to be a written standard. Not sure if it still is, as I’ve been away from Starbucks for 3+ years. You were supposed to unlock the doors 10 minutes earlier than opening time and keep them unlocked 10 minutes after.

Yeah I remember stores getting in big trouble because district managers (even SMs from other stores) would randomly show up to stores within the 10 minute pre-open/post-close windows. And if the doors were locked, everyone working would get a write-up.

Thank god it’s not like this anymore.

What is the point of having posted store hours if you have to be open outside of those hours. Reading that people were actually getting in trouble for this infuriates me! And, it looks like the company was trying to set people up for failure here.

That was never really a rule but something nice you could do. Basically you could unlock the doors in the AM 10 min before open to allow customers to look at the menu. Nobody ever really did it and I’ve never had a customer even speak of it until recently. I don’t think that applied to closing though. Maybe they allowed 10 minutes for people to pack up and leave?

Anyway that courtesy was removed several years ago for partner safety. That dude was just being a real bitch. If he was reallly a partner, he must have been a POS partner.

It’s an old rule that is no longer around. It was repopularized by a former corporate guy claiming it still exists (it doesn’t). He hadn’t worked for Sbux in almost a decade and a half and I kind of feel this was his rule that he is trying to keep alive

The ten minute rule used to be a (bullshit) company standard. it was officially gotten rid of around three years ago i think? but as a SSV i never followed it even when it was a “rule.”
creating a culture of entitled demanding customers for your low wage workers to have to deal with is not the move

Make sure the door is locked right when you close. We usually even lock them a minute or two beforehand

When closed doors should be locked. Hours posted on the door are set hours, meaning there is no service after that time. I started back in 2015 and have never heard of the “10 minute” rule ever being a thing.

If it happens again, reiterate that you are closed and machines are running cleaning cycles and refer them to the next closest open Starbucks.

It was a thing for a long time, they stopped doing it a few years ago. Still though, anyone who shows up after a store is closed expecting it has some issues lol

I use this rule at my store but differently from how it started. If we are still serving a customer when the clock hits close time I will keep serving customers until 10 minutes after close if they come in while the initial customers are still there. If no one’s there at close doors get locked up and we do our closing stuff. Even if someone tries coming 7 minutes after doors are already locked.
