My coworker got a customer banned solely because they didn’t like them. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MysticalGnar
Like the title says, a coworker of mine got a customer banned because they used to be friends but arent anymore. The customer doesn’t even come in when they’re working but our SM asked them to find a different Starbucks a couple days ago. Is this against our policy and is there anything we can do about it?

There could be more to it than you know. Something serious could have happened between them that the partner only shared with the sm and doesn’t feel comfy telling the whole store. Tbh, I would stay out of it because I would want people to stay out of it if I had to ask for someone to be banned.

Fr^^. Could easily be related to threats, stalking etc. One of my SSV’s dealt with a similar situation to this

Unfortunately the customer is one of our old partners that all of us are friends with ☹️

To me this makes it all the more likely there’s something bigger going on. You don’t just ban an old partner - that you all know and love - just because one person doesn’t like them. I think you should stay out of it OP.

Something probably happened that you don't know about. If they were asked to not come back, chances are it's serious.

clearly something more going on here, whats their reason for not liking them?

Ex best friends, had a falling out a couple months ago, but it never got necessarily bad. Customer friend basically stopped going to our store altogether besides super early in the morning on occasion (the partner works late afternoon/evenings) so they havent seen each other in months.

The customer reached out to a couple of us about it as it was a blindside from the SM as those two have the interacted at all, let alone in store.

I mean if someone I had a falling out with came into my job I’d be upset too.
MysticalGnar [OP] 6 points 8m ago
From what we’ve been told/seen, neither have actually seen each other in the store or been in it while the other was there since the falling out.

It’s not easy to officially get a customer banned from a store. You need documentation to do it. Unless this is an unofficial ban and the DM is completely unaware of it, I would assume that there was a good reason for it that may be getting withheld from you. If it is unofficial and the DM is unaware of it then no it’s not allowed.
new_direction_ 13 points 8m ago
There was a regular who was banned from the entire shopping center next door for getting violent with employees and our DM almost refused to ban him. It’s pretty hard to get someone banned, lol.

seems like you’re missing information maybe your coworker isn’t comfortable sharing w you. just lean into empathy and assume theres a bigger picture to all of this.
clouds183 24 points 8m ago
your sm asking them to find a different starbucks doesn’t mean they’re banned. the dm has to file a ton of paperwork and work with lawyers to actually ban someone and usually takes multiple months of incident report filings for them to warrant one. if they come back and those filings haven’t happened then you’re not allowed to ask them to leave for simply being there not doing anything wrong.

source: my store had a gun threat and that wasn’t enough to ban the individual who is a regular at out store.
Affectionate_Fart 8 points 8m ago
Dude my store bans people all the time. It’s not that hard.
miniinovaa 17 points 8m ago
They probably aren’t legally banned, just like banned with intimidation lol
Affectionate_Fart 6 points 8m ago
No we have actual legal documentation and court dates. The police write a trespass order and then give it to us, if the customer comes back we call the police and they are arrested and charged with trespassing.

A fun threat wasn’t enough?! How tf?!!
SNES182 13 points 8m ago
If I knew we could ban customers, I may still have a job there.
dreaminajj 10 points 8m ago
is there anything you can do about it? why does it really matter though at the end of the day. clearly your coworker has an issue with this person that you might not know all the details about and it really isn’t any of your business honestly. be a little more empathetic to your fellow partners
RosieHarlan 9 points 8m ago
If the customer called corporate to complain they’ll probably overturn it and have a talking too with the SM. It usually takes months of documentation to get the DM to approve of a ban unless there’s a physical or sexual assault in the store.
breaking_goddess 6 points 8m ago
My comment is directed generally to partners who are saying “how easy or how difficult is it to ban someone”: this is why the digital incident report form became a thing. Because it used to require paperwork, and snail mail. For anything to be “official”. Now, this is a direct line to the Safety & Security team, and not that they can decide for you or anything, but there’s no more waiting for Seattle to get the documentation type thing. Now a days the SM & DM receive an email, and the DM can escalate from there if it’s needed.

I can’t speak for what should or shouldn’t have happened at this store with this particular story, but I just wanted to clear the air about how official documentation works for these kinds of things.

Like any private business, you've always got the right to refuse service
MastodonEmotional291 5 points 8m ago
Good for them, slay
kaynist 5 points 8m ago
idk but i wish i could do the same, a couple ex coworkers from my last job give come in and i have a fuckin panic attack every time they do and i have to leave the floor.
Odd-Fun-9086 5 points 8m ago
ok but that’s one customer… who cares and it’s not like it’s not another starbucks around… and it must be more to it if the SM is actually acting on it
BoatAccomplished8229 4 points 8m ago
i see nothing wrong with this. perks of the job.
AshMoony 2 points 8m ago
I’m hoping there’s more to it (not in a bad way) otherwise it seems like an abuse of the power. 🤷‍♀️
