How Flexible is the 6 Month Transfer Rule (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Ew_Oxygen1124
The week I turn 18, I’m moving out of an abusive situation into an apartment about 30-40 minutes away from my current location. I have a less than 10 minute commute. But after I move, I would need to get a ride from my SO when they’re available and significantly change my hours, because I am not confident yet driving on Texas highways (for those of you who aren’t initiated, driving on TX highways is extremely dangerous, and I’m a fairly new driver). It isn’t safe for me to take myself and there’s a Starbucks location maybe 10 minutes away from my new apartment. I’m more than willing to suck it up for a month or two and adjust my availability, but I’m worried about then losing hours and not making rent. How likely is it that I could flex the 6 month transfer rule, and where would I find documentation of any exceptions to give to my SM if needed?

100% its a fake rule designed to keep partners at a store for a decent amount of time. if you have a valid reason for transferring they cant stop you. ive worked w the company for only 1.5 years and ive been at four stores now

There’s not really any documentation either way, so it’s kinds still sucks, because they can still say they’re making an “exception” because they told me that when I started. I’ve definitely seen posts on here saying the 6mo rule is BS but I haven’t seen any documentation in the hub or any sort of contract etc. about it. Even if it’s not true, she still has the power to not help me out

When I moved, I told my SM that I needed to transfer, and the commute wasn’t worth it to me +the district I was transferring to had a pay raise.
They let me go even though I had just transferred to that store probably 3 months prior as a new shift.
Hopefully your SM is as understanding, and the sooner they know probably the better. Sometimes transfers do take a while though, so keep communication open with both SMs. I had to hound my DM to push my transfer through.

Thank you!, I appreciate it

From my understanding if you have some transparency with your SM, no infractions, are still in the same district the DM approves and the store manager whose store you'd be joining agrees then you wouldn't be held up from transferring. It really depends on their understanding, compassion and willingness to work with you.

I don’t think it would be the same district. We definitely have plenty of transparency but we aren’t close. She knows about my move and my availability change, and I don’t have any infractions.

There could be more steps like contacting the DM of the other district. Reach out to your SM and let them know your concern about the 6 month policy and ask for their guidance on how to potentially bypass that and ask if they have the contact information for the DM for the area you'd be moving to, find the information for the SM of the store you want to transfer to and then make contact.

I think if your honest and open with your SM, it can be done in less than 6 months. I didn’t know about this until just now, and maybe once when I first got hired about transferring.
My SM actually sat me down and said “you don’t look happy, the other store you helped out loved you, do you want to transfer there?”
It baffled me, but also, my first store I worked at, every single person was rude, no one gave me a chance to be in bar, and now that I finally transferred, I’ve been getting all these opportunities my DT Store wasn’t giving me
