In my state the minimum wage is $7.25/hour, and honestly, no, it doesn’t really make the positions more competitive.
There are virtually no places around here that pay $7.25 anymore. Most places pay at least $10-12 per hour, but there are a lotttt of places that pay more.
I recently got hired at Starbucks because I had to move, and when I was looking for jobs, there were quite a few places I applied to that all paid well over $15 to start. I got job offers and interviews from many of them. One store I applied to started at $8, but I had an interview with them and they asked me how much I was looking to make hourly. I stupidly said $15 at a minimum and they immediately agreed to $15, so I definitely could have gotten more, lol (didn’t end up working there because I chose the siren though). I also work part time doing financial stuff for a cleaning company making $18/hour, but the cleaners make much more than that, and they hire people who have no experience cleaning to make this much money.
And when I did finally start at Starbucks, they were super short staffed. They weren’t getting any applicants, people still had plenty of other higher paying jobs to look at. I’m sure in other states with a low minimum wage it might be different, or even in a different part of this state, but that’s how it is at my Starbucks/in my area.
