Corn syrup doesn’t have a distinct smell. You’re smelling the artificial caramelized nut flavor they put in it. I’m pretty sure all or most of the syrups have corn syrup. the US sneaks it in everything!

edit: Just checked and it doesn’t have corn syrup in it anyway
