After a year, I think I’m done… (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by AAA_Morningstar
I’ve been at mine for a year. From dealing with the “popular clique” that gossips to how my shift managers have no empathy and the mistreatment employees with illness, I’ve reached my breaking point.

I ended up hurting my back earlier today. The injury started a few years back and have been getting chiropractic treatment, but after I exceeded the free visits, I had to stop going because I couldn’t afford the treatment 🙃

I was fine for the first half hour, just on food/ovens and then I felt a sudden pain. I know the proper way to bend, but somehow still managed to do something to it... I asked if I could leave to go to the ER and the shifts’ decision was to put me on drive through. I thought that would be a better compromise but instead of taking drive through orders I was on window/register. The cash drawers are ridiculously low and even bending at the knees was too painful.

After about 15 minutes I asked if I could leave again and they decided to get me a chair but that didn’t help with the cars who were either too far away from the window, or the big lifted diesel pickup trucks. After another 15 minutes I asked yet again and was denied. Then I said I need to sit down for a bit and was told that I couldn’t leave until I was relieved, as if the other partner on DTO couldn’t do both Window and DTO.. I was then asked if I could stay another 30 minutes till another partner arrived for their shift. It wasn’t possible and I am in so much pain and then I was finally able to leave but they asked me to find coverage for my shift ASAP which further preventing getting treatment.

I’m currently sitting in the emergency room as I am typing this just filled out a Workmen’s Compensation form. I know that even if it isn’t denied, I’m still limited because it’s part of a pre-existing injury. But the fact that I was prevented from seeking treatment multiple times, possibly making the injury worse is what I’m really upset about…

Who the fuck says no when someone’s trying to go to the ER

Three shift managers… two were on bar. And they asked me to find coverage for the remainder of my shift. Like I could literally be dying and they’re like, “YoU nEeD tO fInD cOvErAgE fOr ThE rEsT oF YoUr ShIfT”. 🙄

Please contact ethics and literally anyone else you think necessary. Make sure there is a documentation of this in the system somewhere. These ssv’s need a reality check cause if a barista is requesting to leave for whatever reason, they can *ASK* that the barista try to find coverage but it is also their responsibility to find coverage in case of an emergency and this is a valid emergency.

Personally to me it felt like they were trying to push this under the rug to claim that you did not notify them or that you insisted you stayed for your shift. So please make sure there is some form of documentation of this other than the workers comp form. It might protect you in the long run in case they try to retaliate against you (which I fear may happen)

I am so sorry you had to deal with that. I agree with the post suggesting you call ethics.
Continue through the process . Don't forget that any HR is paid to protect the company and not the employee. Document everything and keep notes with times dates and names. This will help you advocate for yourself.
