Just had my ass handed to me over the phone by my manager for calling out an hour before my shift bc I had a migraine come on super fast that has been causing me to throw up. I know only giving them one hour notice sucks, but there’s no way I (1) would’ve passed the symptom check or (2) would’ve made it through my shift (especially bc my migraines are made worse by strong smells, which sbux has a ton of). I just didn’t appreciate the hostility, is this a common experience??

Working when you feel like you are going to throw up is a health violation waiting to happen, and a pretty big one. Try to point out that it was either you called off or you threw up all over the clients' frappucinos.

yea unfortunately you just got to let it go honestly. if your manager tries to retaliate they can’t sick time is protected and you weren’t allowed to work anyways

next time you work, i would give your manager that feedback. that’s unacceptable. a shift can easily be covered, it is never that deep.

well idk about easily covered lol but it isnt that deep and health is always more important

omg i have chronic migraines so i feel you on this one so much. i always get push back when i call out for migraines. nobody ever understands just how bad it is and how frustrating it is to suffer with migraines like this

oh yeah had the same thing happen to me last week, got chewed out for calling out as soon as we opened at 4:30 knowing full well that i’ve had pharyngitis for the past two weeks but no more sick time and was forced to come in anyway even though i still don’t have my voice back fully

Sometimes it’s good to come in and see that you’re half dead to reduce friction. Just show up and make a mess on the back line, I’m sure they won’t chew you out again
