Newly hired Barista looking for advice. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by koanuk
I was just hired a couple of hours ago. I had submitted my application a couple weeks ago, but I decided to stop by and speak to the manager (I waited till it wasn’t busy to approach him). He seemed impressed that I came in person and gave me an interview right then. It was the most chill conversational interview I’ve ever had. He must have liked my responses because he hired me on the spot. I’m waiting on my background check (which should be done tomorrow). I’m supposed to have my on boarding (don’t really know what that is) Monday and start training. I’m so excited! I really wanted this job. Any advice or tips for my first day?

First off— Congratulations on the new job!

As for tips, here are a few that helped me tremendously:

• Do not be afraid to make mistakes. It is easier said than done, but you’re new and making mistakes is normal.

• When speaking directly to a customer and have trouble hearing or need clarification— do not hesitate to ask. They may get annoyed or snappy, but it is so important that the order is typed in correctly to save the person on bar (making the drinks) from having to remake the drink if they are unhappy.

• Ask questions!!!!! When I started, I was sooo nervous and felt very dumb asking for clarification/help. It’s hard to get over the initial fear of asking, but the other partners remember what it was like, so ask away.

• The training doesn’t cover a lot of the more mundane tasks like making whips, sweet cream, dishes, etc., so pay attention to your other partners and what they do during slower times. They may prep mocha, inclusions, whips, etc., so just ask if they need any help. Or ask the shift if there are any tasks they need done: whips, sweet cream, mocha, pumpkin sauce, lemonade, etc. If you don’t know how to do something, ask! If you’re not comfortable asking, most things have instructions on the box, so use that. Some do not, so you will have to ask.

• Remember to date everything! If you prep anything, date it! I’ll attach a file at the end of fate dots. If you open a syrup, date it. If you stock dairy alternatives in a fridge, date them. If you prep whips, date them. You get the idea.

• Do not rush the process. Learning everything, especially with no previous experience, is hard. Do not push yourself or be too hard on yourself during the learning process.

• Don’t be afraid to communicate if you need help. The floor runs best when everyone is working together!

That is all for now I believe. Here is the Starbucks Infographics that provide some information that may be helpful!

Good luck!

Don’t expect full training. The intentions are there but something always comes up.
