Putting whip on all non-dairy? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nimba-ismycat
Ok so, if you get a mobile order and the drink has a non-dairy modification do you still add the whip if they didn’t specify “no whip”? I believe all drinks that get whip should get it unless it says “no whip”. Some people at my store say they were trained that if any drink is made with non-dairy milk then you don’t add whip unless they tell you to keep it, but I don’t totally agree. And at my store it’s become the norm to type “keep whip” if they still want the whip and sometimes not even add “no whip” if they don’t want it. I’ve even had partners do this for drinks like the sugar cookie almond milk frapp that gets whip as standard with the non dairy milk. I just want to know what the rest of you think or did I just miss something??

If it doesn't say "no whip", then it gets whip.
dontcry2022 6 points 8m ago
This is what I've thought, too.

If you're on register tho you should def ask people if they want whip if they specify a dairy-free milk, just bc they're right there in front of you so why not. They may not know the standard gets whip, and you can save everyone time by asking
RyusuiJL 6 points 8m ago
Register, sure. Just like "iced or hot", "cream or sugar", "Classic in your iced coffee or no"...

But if someone is placing their order on mobile, then they ought to be able to put in the LEAST amount of effort and actually read what the damn app is showing them comes with their drink.

Especially if they're modifying it to begin with. You already know you want it different than how it's made. Maybe make sure that everything shown right in front of your face on the screen is exactly what you want.
dontcry2022 2 points 8m ago
Ah yeah for that I don't disagree. Order what you actually want when you see the customization options in front of you and the picture of the drink on the app literally shows whip. We can fix it or remake it of course if you realize you goofed............. but don't be mad at us, and remember to order it correctly next time
RyusuiJL 1 points 8m ago
See, I totally have no problem with doing remakes for anyone who asks. Ever. As long as you're not being an ass about it. You ordered wrong? Well, fuck. I've done that so many times. Here's a proper one for you.

You want to lie right to my face and say the cashier put it in wrong when I was standing RIGHT there next to them and heard it myself? I will tell you to kindly GTFO.

for mobiles they have the option to take off the whip so thats on them if they mess up. for dt, if it doesn’t say “add whip” or “no whip” I have to ask my dt person and then the cust if they forgot to ask.
PrestigiousLong3023 22 points 8m ago
When they were training me, they told me to never put whipped cream on orders with non dairy milk unless it was a drive through/cafe order where the person was asked if they wanted whip and said yes. Ie mobile orders with non dairy milks do not get whip, basically ever. My manager trained me on bar and his reasoning was “it’s easy enough to just put it on a drink for someone if they wanted it and didn’t get it, but we can’t take it off. If they got it on their drink and didn’t want it we would have to remake the whole drink.”

Everyone look at this comment here, this is the way.

Exactly! Came to say the same.

The Beverage Resource Manual was updated May 2022 switching from saying no whip on any non-dairy unless requested to:

*If a customer orders a nondairy beverage which includes whipped cream in the build, confirm with the customer whether or not they would like the whipped cream included. All sugar-free syrup beverages should also not be topped with whipped cream, unless requested by customer.*

Where it gets tricky is that the default on POS and MOP is to build to standard and include whip. Ordering in store is easy enough to click no whip and hit whip again for it to say add whip so it's clear for bar partners at least. MOP is one of those where you need to train your customer by building to standard (including whip) and remaking when they don't want it but letting them know to check the way they order it since whip is a default option so an extra click to take off next time they order.
Of course depending on how often that happens when they don't want the whip, it may be better for your store to not put it on and instead add if they ask since it's easier to just add whip and switch lids instead of remaking the whole drink.

Yes that’s the thing for me is that we really should be training our customers to order what they want from the start. If one store doesn’t add it and one does, one of them is going to have a potential angry customer or something. And so many times a customer will order a “white mocha” then I have to ask “hot or iced” “what size” then they’ll sit there till I ask “anything else”. It’s like we basically have to order it for them because they don’t know how to order properly.
plantainpapii 2 points 8m ago
Exactly why I try to be on POS as little as possible and just hover around FOH and do CS/hop on bar if need be.

The “anything else”-part of taking someone’s order is mind numbing and I can feel the synapses in my brain become more and more dull the more I say “anything else”.

By the 10th time, I’m in a walking catatonic state and spiral into existential dread.

If there’s an aptitude test for customers in customer service, starcucks customers gotta be F tier.
plantainpapii 1 points 8m ago
Forgot to add:
You say “anything else” for the 8th time for one order and they “nope”.

They follow you to bar “oh i meant almond milk/iced/no whip/‘can you add extra caramel drizzle’”

I then proceed to apply extreme pressure to my own neck with my bare hands until I go sleepy-bye :]

Thanks for this, I didn’t realize that taking whip off and then reading it would mark it as such. I had a coworker do that the other day, and when I tried to recreate it on the register I couldn’t figure out how. Half my store just does an ask me that says “yes whip” 😂
highspeed06 1 points 8m ago
the last part of that about the sugar free syrups suggests that if a drink is ordered with alternative milk, it should also get no whip unless requested.

at least in my store, it’s not too difficult for us to catch someone as they pick up their order and ask, or even just put some whip on when they ask us. if they don’t have the option to add whip is sucks that they have to ask every time but i believe it saves product not having to remake drinks without whip.
Sarenord 7 points 8m ago
Yeah no if it's a mobile order you're getting exactly what prints out on that tag
Unicorndreamer-23 7 points 8m ago
I was also trained to not put whip if it is made with non-dairy milk. There were often times where we had to re-make the drinks because it had whip on even though it didn’t say no whip! So normally i make the drink without the whip. And when custies come, i ask them and put the whip if they still want it. WAY better than making the whole drink again. I also remind them about indicating no whip option when they mobile order next time.
nimba-ismycat [OP] 1 points 8m ago
Ok I find that interesting because I was trained to make it as normal unless they specify. but I started out at a licensed store in a grocery store and then came to the big leagues later and there was a lot of things I had been wrong, so….
somewheredaydreaming 6 points 8m ago
If they're smart enough to change the dairy in the app, then I assume they know how to change it to no whip. If it doesn't state no whip, it gets the whip if it's in the build. If they didn't realize, then here's you're lesson and you can order correctly next time. I'm not a mind reader, I'm a barista. Order I right or I will teach you how for next time 🖤
purpleelephant77 6 points 8m ago
It gets whip unless they ask for no whip and it’s on the sticker. We get a lot of custies who want nondairy and whip.
PauseAccording20 2 points 8m ago
When I was a partner, if someone ordered a non dairy on mobile only, I wouldn’t add the whip, when they came in I would ask if they would like it. It’s quicker to assume they don’t want it and add it after vs completely remaking the drink. I don’t think it’s standard but 🤷🏻‍♀️
psionicillusionist 2 points 8m ago
We had a habit of writing "keep whip" because most of the green beans were struggling.
nightimevil 2 points 8m ago
Cafe order: I ask the customer, then politely remind whoever is at POS to ask so I know on bar. (We just hit no whip, then whip again so the ticket says "add whip".)

Mobile: I set the ticket aside and ask the customer. I get about a 50/50 for yes/no whip. I'm lactose intolerant, and I know some people are really sensitive. I've met people who thank me profusely for waiting because even the whipped cream will upset their stomach for a few hours, or for the rest of the day. Or they're vegan, and totally forgot to hit the button. It happens sometimes. I get it, and I'm not comfortable with adding dairy to a alt-milk drink.

Drive-thru: I ask DTO, and also gently remind them to hit the whip button. We all forget at times, I get it.

I haven't encountered a delivery order like this yet, and I would probably do the same thing as a mobile. That way the driver doesn't get a bad review or whatever.

For the SCAM Frap and Apple Crisp Frap, those get whip in the recipe so I follow that. If a customer is vegan or LI, I'd just remake. Some just say to scrape off the whip, so if they say that then I do that.

I just assume it gets whip unless it specifies. If the drink is ordered in DT or cafe they should def be asking if they want whip or not if they’re getting a nondairy milk. Sometimes if it seems like the customer didn’t want whip, I won’t put it on and I’ll double check with the customer just in case. It’s quicker for me to add whip to a drink rather than remake the entire thing.

at this point i just ask for most orders bc even with normal milk they’ll say no whip when i ask sometimes. but yeah for non dairy and nonfat i put add whip but i just ask anyways or i’ll forget to when i need to 😅
Markedsoultheif 1 points 8m ago
It’s easier to add the whip back than it is to have to remake a whole non dairy beverage so we tend to leave it off on mobiles until we can ask.
interyx 1 points 8m ago
If the order was taken in store and I get a sticker for, say, an almond milk mocha by itself I'll follow up with the customer or whoever took the order to confirm. I've gotten our store to confirm whip in most cases by hitting No Whip and then hit Add Whip; if I see that I don't have to ask.

For mobile orders and deliveries they will always get it because I don't think there's a realistic expectation for customers to confirm the whip like that. It's sufficient if it doesn't say No Whip in my opinion.

For drinks that come with non-dairy and whipped cream in the standard recipe like the sugar cookie frappuccino I just leave it on. It's part of the recipe.

they way i see it, they have that chance to say no whip. otherwise i ask
