any other non-christian partners just getting real tired of the "holiday" launch just being Christmas launch? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MountainGoat999
For reference, I am Jewish, and there is virtually no representation for Hanukah. Only thing I saw was one type of Hanukah gift card that is literally on a Christmas tree.

Would it kill them to have a couple Hanukah songs on the playlist? I've worked in food service and retail for a while so I'm used to this time of year being only about Christmas, but at past jobs we would put up decorations for multiple holidays, not just one.

Not sure if any people who celebrate Kwanzaa or Yule or any other holidays I might be forgetting feel the same. Rant over.
spicedtear 356 points 8m ago
hey at least we get paid extra on days we don’t even celebrate!!! Catch me working all Christmas Day like 🧍‍♀️🧍‍♀️🧍‍♀️
MountainGoat999 [OP] 339 points 8m ago
This is true lol. People like "so sorry you have to work today" and I'm sitting there like 😏🕎
spicedtear 262 points 8m ago
last year i was in a mood on Xmas and was like “yeah my family and kids are at home all alone :(“ and they tipped me more. felt a little evil for the holiday season
ladyelenawf 53 points 8m ago
>felt ~~a little evil~~ completely appropriate for the ~~holiday season~~ situation

i’m not particularly religious tho i love the ~vibes~ and overall mood of christmas. but it always bothered me that they push “holiday launch” and “holiday blend” and “make sure to say happy holidays!” when the cups (my first year at least) were “merry coffeemas” and the gift card display looks like a christmas tree and everything is red and green. most of the gift cards are christmas themed, with a few generic winter ones and like. one each for other major holidays. it feels like the want the brownie points for being “inclusive,” but don’t care to put much actual work in. which feels about right for starbucks, to be honest.
Jew_3 29 points 8m ago
Honestly they should just call it the Christmas Launch. If you’re going to treat it as Christmas and call it holidays, you’ve managed to alienate nearly everyone. Obviously, calling it holiday and having all the holidays represented would be the best, but half assing it does nothing.
HAM1SH 6 points 8m ago
Were those the cups that were supposed to say "Merry Coffeemas" but ended up saying "EE MERRY CO" ?

Edit to add: when we had those EE MERRY CO cups my manager at the time told us to say "Merry Coffeemas" when we handed the holiday drinks out with those cups, I constantly said "EE MERRY CO" customers and coworkers were confused to hell but I thought it was funny
snowflakenecklace 2 points 8m ago
YES but i swear some of them lined up right? idk we had machine issues at my store at that time and i had been working there for approximately 2 months, so i think i’ve repressed the memories for my own health 😂😂. like the goal was “merry coffeemas” which ok FINE whatever but the design was horrible.
[deleted] 110 points 8m ago
Welcome to white America. What can I get started for you?
wifeypoopoo 82 points 8m ago
It’s just the music at our store! They won’t let us put up any decorations, which I was really excited about. As an atheist, I’m still all for celebrating whatever. I just take the religious aspect out. But the music is so Jesus forward 🤦🏼‍♀️
Numerous-Persimmon50 28 points 8m ago
I was surprised they wouldn’t let us even put lights up. Like lights arent Christmas
Veldora12 8 points 8m ago
Weird my store and every other one I’ve worked out has been decked out with Christmas decorations, we even have a tree. Personally I don’t care either way but I find it interesting because so many stores seem to not have anything
lunaflect 7 points 8m ago
We’ve had a Christmas tree and garlands etc every year. This year, the DM said *no* to decorations of any kind.
kitcat1210 3 points 8m ago
That’s what happened to me too. We have a new DM this year so idk if thats why but ive ALWAYS decorated
BeingBumbleBree 1 points 8m ago
I will say, as someone who put in a god awful number of hours in a retail establishment that only played non-religious christmas/wintery holiday music, the songs available are so heinous that I would have rather listened to church hymns (keep in mind, I’m not just atheist, I’m anti-organized religion so anything church-related makes me want to tear my hair out) than listen to one more rendition of the twelve days of Christmas that changes keys on every single day or any more auto tuned children sing about elves working overtime. That’s not to mention the 8 minute version of jingle bells with the worlds worst “instrumental” solo running across half of it (in quotations because I’m pretty sure that the instrument in question was one of the drills they use at the dentist). So maybe just the normal rotation of whatever is popular at the time?
dontcry2022 53 points 8m ago
Regarding the music, it's a bit much. It's not just cutesy "Baby Jesus in a manger getting gifts from the 3 wise men" it's like, worship music. Which, given Starbucks doesn't market itself as a Christian restaurant like Chick Fil A and Cookout, is just a lot to subject customers and partners of all backgrounds to when they're just coming in for coffee or food.
friendlySkeletor 34 points 8m ago
Yeah it makes me insanely uncomfortable. I've got some pretty hardcore religious trauma and it really gets under my skin. I already kinda generally hate this time of year because of seasonal depression and driving anxiety but the religious stuff is the cherry on top. The only good part is the sugar plum danish and the peppermint bark tbh.
itsyaboimikey_ 6 points 8m ago
we don’t even play the “holiday” music at our store lol
jklmnopedy 2 points 8m ago
Where's your store, I'm transferring right now.
itsyaboimikey_ 2 points 8m ago
knoxville tn lmaoooo
beanandnova 48 points 8m ago
My store is in a historic jewish neighborhood and I’m Jewish as well. We moved the menorah gift card right up to the front register. So sick of “holidays” just meaning Christmas.
MountainGoat999 [OP] 32 points 8m ago
You'd think they'd have like idk one Hanukah themed anything except for the gift card??

This year i straight up do not want a red apron cause I'm tired of selling out my heritage and conforming w Christianity. Gimme a blue apron or something ffs.
itsyaboimikey_ 26 points 8m ago
a rich blue menu board mixed in with the red ones, blue aprons, etc would look so nice. the red is so intense and garish. i crocheted a little tip jar sweater in blue, gold, and white and put it right up front lol
Accomplished-Bad3856 27 points 8m ago
I’ve heard the family edit of Adam Sandler’s novelty Hanukkah song at my local sbux. And there’s the “Holiday Blend” in blue and gold.

But no matter how you slice it, three days after Halloween it’s Christmas at Starbucks.
dirtychai0218 24 points 8m ago
i was one of the people in charge of buying decorations this year and i had to go to THREE STORES to find some hannukah decor bc we have quite a few jewish partners, it really pisses me off that the “holidays” are really just christmas and new years
Responsible_Snow7109 13 points 8m ago
Well ur a very kind partner for going around to a few places to find decorations to help make them feel included too 🙂
dirtychai0218 5 points 8m ago
thank u 🥹 it was a struggle but i want all partners n customers who don’t celebrate christmas or anything to at least feel thought of, i don’t really celebrate anything but i know it’s nice to feel included
Responsible_Snow7109 2 points 8m ago
Yepp! ☺️

And yea i dont celebrate anything either but its really awesome and nice to see others caring about people who do celebrate one of the holidays. Definitely is important for everyone to feel included when coming to a place of business because then it will make them feel more welcomed and more seen and they will likely keep coming back and being kind! And that type of stuff is what goes towards someone being a genuine kind human 🥰
intothewickedness 5 points 8m ago
Thank you for making all of us feel included 🥺🥺🥺
realnewtgeiszler 20 points 8m ago
If I hear Mary Did You Know play "The deaf will hear" as my deaf coworker runs around doing her thing one more time I'm going to explode with grief
mewwissa 13 points 8m ago
Joke’s on the Christians, Christmas is mostly a pagan holiday anyway. 🤣 Christmas tree? Santa Claus? Presents? Decorations?
LaurabelleBabe 11 points 8m ago
Huh, must depend on the store. We have some Hanukkah and Kwanza stuff :) everything says “holiday” and we do have a Christmas tree but all of our other holiday stuff is on our front display.
friendlySkeletor 14 points 8m ago
I'd bet its a demographic thing. If stores are in a largely white christian area they won't fucking bother. That or it's up to DMs to decide (which, knowing my DM, would make just as much sense).

I could put in a whole rant about the war on christmas and the culture war and all that bs and how the dominant majority sees representation of others as an attack on them, but I think we all know that by now.
ecbatic 8 points 8m ago
as a jewish person as well, I do find it annoying when major corporations pretend to care about Hanukkah when:

-it isn’t even a major Jewish holiday

-it changes every year where it falls on the calendar, for example last year it was right after thanksgiving, this year it perfectly aligns with christmas

to me it just feels performative. i’d rather starbucks give jewish partners the option to take rosh hashanah and yom kippur off, rather than pretend to care about a holiday that is not very significant just because it falls around christmas some years. just my opinion! no one even knows our significant holidays lol
MountainGoat999 [OP] 3 points 8m ago
For fucking real! I had to work one of the days of Rosh Hashanah and it's maddening that i don't get time and a half for that.
claretamazon 8 points 8m ago
I am Pagan and while I love the vibes and aesthetics of Christmas I'm glad my store isn't playing the Xmas music right now. We don't get a lot of religious people so it's not too bad. Having some silver and blue hot cups would be nice.
kingbirbiii 7 points 8m ago
Muslim partner— yes it’s a little awkward sometimes
princesskittyglitter 6 points 8m ago
I had an SM once who would NOT let us write "xmas" on the cup, it HAD to be the full "christmas" and i was like why? and he was like some people get offended at xmas, and i was like well if that's the case then why are we even calling it christmas to begin with???
bejones1 6 points 8m ago
Atheist here. I can’t stand the music. I don’t necessarily mind the secular Christmas tunes, but the Jesus-y music is so triggering. Lots of trauma coming from organized religion. The music player goes back to Christmas music all the time. Even if we change it. About to plug my phone in and play something.
deathbeforedecaf1984 5 points 8m ago
I’m Atheopagan and I had someone say that Halloween (Samhain) is the devils holiday. So yea, holiday season for any non-Christian denomination is tough
ThierryWasserman 4 points 8m ago
Hanukkah is just not very Important. They should start Rosh Hashanah and Pessach celebrations.
MountainGoat999 [OP] 0 points 8m ago
Well yeah this too. But, if culturally there's only gonna be celebrations around the "holidays," that doesn't leave us with a lot of options. Would love to see any kind of celebration for the High Holy Days or Pesach as well tho.
strawberry_bug 4 points 8m ago
christian partner here and i gotta say i agree 100%,, why call it holiday launch if you're gonna autoplay christian worship music every hour? the virtue signalling is 😬😬
bumblebuzzed 4 points 8m ago
Last year when I tried to put up a Hanukah garland with all of our Christmas decor, my manager told me it wasn’t allowed lmfao
MountainGoat999 [OP] 5 points 8m ago
Tbh I'm gonna bring a hanukiah in for Hanukah this year and if they say anything I will text my Jewish DM lol
canidieyet_ 4 points 8m ago
it’s never made sense to me that it’s “holiday launch” but everything is christmas themed besides a few gift cards & some of the 1lb coffee bags. for a company that prides itself in being inclusive, they sure do a bad job at it. i’d love to see more done for other holidays. our store has a lot of customers that don’t celebrate and have told me before it sucks that nowhere really celebrates them

i’m not religious, so holidays to me are more of a family gathering (even though they are religious & see holidays in a different light than i do) for me.
AzureBluet 3 points 8m ago
It's hilarious, people yell at us for not celebrating christmas meanwhile fucking everything is christmasy and red and green
lat3spr1ng 3 points 8m ago
AGREE!!! so exhausting as a jewish partner to be drowned in the christmas celebrations. they shouldn’t claim it’s a “holiday” launch if it’s really just christmas.
Fugg3tt_777 3 points 8m ago
No because I do not care
hlfblind 3 points 8m ago
the music is SO christian too like come on 😭😭😭
LegendOfJakelope 3 points 8m ago
God, I definitely feel the fuckin exhaustion here. My family has always celebrated Yule/Winter Solstace, and I always feel in a weird place about "holiday" launches at work. A lot of the decorations are the same bc they were adopted/stolen, but I know no one is putting out mistletoe and holly for Yule ): I worked in cosmetics recently and there was a whole stupid sign for Clinique's "holiday" decor. "MERRY CLINIQUE"

Like..... wut?

Anyway. Happy Hanukah in advance, friend
BeingBumbleBree 3 points 8m ago
Happy Yule and Solstice to you <3
Also wtf is “merry coffee” or “merry Clinique” supposed to mean anyways, other than “we are lazy and uncreative”
LegendOfJakelope 2 points 8m ago
Ffs, be a little more blatant, right? It doesn't even roll off the tongue. And Happy Secular Winter Season or Holiday to you! :D
MountainGoat999 [OP] 1 points 8m ago
Thank you, a happy and peaceful Yule to you as well!
LegendOfJakelope 1 points 8m ago
Thank you so much!
graylikesoap 2 points 8m ago
i am not religious but i think this goes past just christmas for me especially with my being in the south. holidays are fun or whatever but oh my god the lack of equal representation irks me and my coworkers overall lack of ability to recognize that not everyone believes in what they do. though i am not jewish i constantly wonder why they even bother with the Hanukah gift cards just to slap them onto christmas shit. that completely defeats the point 😐
BeingBumbleBree 2 points 8m ago
Sell a couple pretty blue cups for fucks sake!!!
Mudkip_Enthusiast 2 points 8m ago
As a Jew I can’t stand Christmas season. It’s constantly people telling me that Christmas is a secular holiday and I should be festive, and feeling sorry for me that I don’t *get* to celebrate it. It’s so condescending and shows so much ignorance a complete lack of respect for other religions’ holidays. I love celebrating holidays that apply to me, and I don’t feel empty inside because I don’t celebrate Christmas.

In terms of Starbucks, working during holiday season is awful because I’ve had customers straight up call me disrespectful for wearing my Magen David on Christmas. Maybe I’m bitter but I think I’ve earned it.
mrrumplethedarkone 2 points 8m ago
I don’t get why the cups are still red and green only
Scuffleshuffle 2 points 8m ago
In my district the stores were told we couldn’t decorate with anything not included in the Holiday launch kit. Partners at my store were pretty upset.
MountainGoat999 [OP] 1 points 8m ago
As they should be. I'm gonna bring in my hanukiah, if they tell me I can't put it up I will make a big deal out of it lol
lucislibarii 2 points 8m ago
I'm a Pagan that still celebrates the secular Christmas in addition to Yule. I love the ambiance of Christmas, the stories and how we celebrate, I even love the vibes of Holiday launch though I wish we did it later!

The straight up gospel on the playlist *weirds me out.*

Like, that one Bethlehem song I always want to skip because its so very...not starbucks! Thankfully we don't play the playlist at our store thanks to some finagling but man...I don't mind Christmas but the playlist is So A Lot. I've shared many an exasperated conversation with Jewish and Atheist customers about it, and my other Pagan coworkers aren't exactly pleased either just don't know how to go about it. We're situated in WAY too diverse of an area for that stuff to fly imo.
Creative-Clothes-520 2 points 8m ago
I’m Jewish fuck it mane let it roll lol
ShannyES 2 points 8m ago
I celebrate Yule. But most Christmas traditions are Yule or other pagan traditions wrapped up with a nice little Christian bow. So I ‘chew the fish and spit out the bones”.
lilligremlin 2 points 8m ago
I’m no longer Christian, but I have to admit I love anything Holiday related, and I do wish that the other holidays were involved a bit more. Christmas is just more culturally relevant - full of popular songs and imagery.

The Starbucks by my apartment, in a very Jewish area, has stars of David, and stuff like that up year round, so it may just be dependent on where you are.

I’m down for some Hanukah tunes, but they don’t really connect with as many people as Christmas music does - mainly because Christmas has moved far away from really being a religious holiday, its more of a widespread cultural and commercial holiday.
happybowlita83 2 points 8m ago
I've had a few SM in my time at sbux that ask my if I'm ok with them decorating the store for the holidays. I've never minded, although I don't celebrate it I'm not going to stop other from doing as they like.
MountainGoat999 [OP] 3 points 8m ago
To be clear i don't mind decorating the store with some Christmas stuff. But if you're going to say "we are decorating for the holidays" and then literally only decorate for one holiday, why even bother paying us lip service?
happybowlita83 -3 points 8m ago
I've never been at a store where they decorate for a specific holiday, they have the sbux red and green stuff but no Santa Claus or baby Jesus in sight.
wellthisisjusttiring 2 points 8m ago
Ehh, I like the holiday season regardless. I don’t understand why there is so little representation for others around this season in store. It’s not hard to represent all the “holidays” within the holiday season. At my last job, one of my coworkers was Jewish, and so we made sure the decor for the office included Christmas stuff and Hanukkah stuff! It looked great, and it *wasn’t hard either*.

Christmas is more than just Christianity though; like I grew up celebrating Christmas but none of my family are religious. I feel that’s same for most of the western world, so they just put Christmas at the top and use that as the “holiday”. I’d be so down to go all out with holiday decor though, like dude there’s so many holidays let’s go all out with it. Make everyone feel welcome!

Otherwise I don’t mind it. I like getting to have a change of pace and vibe in life now and again. Plus, at the end of the day, I just take off the red apron and go back home to do whatever I please!
sheep_heavenly 7 points 8m ago
> I grew up celebrating Christmas but none of my family are religious

That's because Christianity is so pervasive in the culture that you celebrate a religious holiday as a default. That's fine, but there's many other religious holidays that aren't treated like that.
wellthisisjusttiring 1 points 8m ago
I know, it is very odd when you really think about it. Christianity did a number on everything. I told a coworker the other day that Christmas existed before Christianity, just as something different—the church just made it their own because of course they did. He didn’t even know! Maybe I don’t mind Christmas because I don’t have any trauma related to religion and because it was just around, but I also gave it a new meaning now which is my own and that helps :)
szhou009 1 points 8m ago
I'm atheist and I think of Christmas as a holiday everyone can enjoy.

Christmas has been largely secularized so I don't see this being that much of a problem
MountainGoat999 [OP] 0 points 8m ago

MountainGoat999 [OP] 1 points 8m ago

My mama get makes it a point to have a part of our store Hanukkah themed every year.
Rasbearylemon 1 points 8m ago
Agreed! Before I moved up to Seattle, I would decorate the store with Hanukkah and Kwanzaa decorations so that everyone felt included! It was always really upsetting because when I'd ask to decorate for Halloween, I was told we weren't allowed because they wanted to avoid religious affiliation. But holiday is always just christmas.
crowhusband 1 points 8m ago
deadass, i dont really celebrate anything so i'm working xmas this year. gonna start lying and manipulating my tips

"yeah, my little sister is at home, she cant wait me to get back 😔" LMAOOO
Swimming-Fee-2445 1 points 8m ago
I haven’t heard overly Christian music. I’ve heard the usual Jingle Bell Rock and All I want for Christmas as well as the traditional O Holy Night and Silent Night. I dont have a problem with it but I definitely feel it’s too early yet. We will all be sick of Christmas music by December 1st at this point.
Castiels_Bees 1 points 8m ago
It's a demographic thing. Well, it used to be. Now it wouldn't surprise me if it's just laziness on the part of corporate. We used to ship cool Hanukkah stuff to the stores in areas with large Jewish populations, while the rest of us got the boring Xmas crap. (Anyone else remember the green toilet brush trees of...2003 I think?)

It could also depend on your sm/dm as to which non-corporate decor you can put out. Personally, I think that Mench on a Bench is much cuter than that creepy ass elf that ends up everywhere. I'd also really love to see some blue and white cups along with the green and red ones. Much more relaxing and less garish.
Hazel_is_Trans 1 points 8m ago
We play Christmas music now??? I never noticed
potterlyfe 1 points 8m ago
I just miss when the christmas launch was more then just new merch. I remember they used to send us some awesome decorations to deck the store out in. I took home a 5 foot glitter Christmas tree that I used for years after we got it. One year I remember getting these cool snowflakes and garland to hang all over. Now its just boring. Nothing about it says christmas accept a few window clings and cups.

We have Hanukkah cards at my store? Also NO One calls is Christmas launch it’s always been holiday
MountainGoat999 [OP] 12 points 8m ago
Yeah we have one type of Hanukah card at my store. And I'm not saying people call it a Christmas launch and that's why I get annoyed. It's more that they pretend that it's holiday-agnostic, when anyone with two eyes can see that there is only one holiday they're actually celebrating.
intothewickedness 11 points 8m ago
Congrats, you have ONE thing that’s Hanukkah related. What color are the cups? Red and green. What music are they playing? Christmas music. Don’t kid yourself into thinking because you have Hanukkah gift cards that it’s somehow not a Christmas themed launch. Us Jews are getting really tired of stores having one small thing or one tiny shelf for us and then saying that they’re “inclusive to all holidays”.
Alternative-Put4708 0 points 7m ago
F it then let’s cancel ALL RELIGIONS AND ALL HOLIDAYS can you imagine if we tried to include every single celebrated holiday in a single month? We barely have room for a handful of cups and gift cards so it makes more sense to celebrate zero holidays and just keep it plain year round to satisfy everyone. White cups only and green siren gift cards only. No birthdays either
intothewickedness 1 points 7m ago
It really wouldn’t be that difficult to include a handful of the most popular holidays during the holiday season. You’re acting as if adding things for 2 or 3 other holidays is this major inconvenience. Like, seriously, just add symbols of those holidays to the cups or something. It’s not that fucking hard. Sorry trying to be inclusive to all is so triggering for you 🙄🖕
Alternative-Put4708 0 points 7m ago
The people above were just complain how 1 or two items isn’t sufficient because there’s still more Xmas stuff
Besides that , there are more that 1-2 religions / holidays if we are going to expand wouldnt we need to include Buddhist holiday, catholic holiday, Wicca holiday, kwanzaa holiday, Jewish holiday, Yule like what
willjuggleforcake -7 points 8m ago
My store says Winter launch 🤷‍♀️
dazedandconfusedhere 7 points 8m ago
Winter launch is technically not until January
