Asking if the customer wants whipped cream? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by tinypecker22
I worked at a stand-alone Starbucks a couple years ago then left to waitress. I recently moved for college and got a part time job at a target Starbucks .Every drink that is made they ask if the customer wants whipped cream on it, even if it comes by standard. I was on the register the other day and it was VERY busy for a kiosk as this is the only target in a quite populated town. I kept on having orders , for example, where the customer would order a vanilla bean or a pumpkin spice (no modifications). The barista on bar would then look at me and be like “did you ask them if they want whipped cream??go ask them” and I would have to shout across the lobby.I even rung up a coffee frap ( which comes with no whip by standard) and they still asked me if they wanted it without whip (what?)Is this a new rule that Starbucks has made?

some customers don’t want it and get super upset even though it comes by standard. so your kiosk is likely responding by asking each customer to avoid customers blowing up at you for no reason.

Usually I would just ask if they ordered it nondairy, but it makes sense, just seems unnecessary at times

i work at a corporate store. afaik it’s not company policy, but we do ask this for every drink that comes with whip by default (and also all frapps, including coffee/espresso) - a lot of customers don’t know what does or doesn’t come with whip or don’t specify without being prompted, so it’s just easier for everyone if we clarify at the register.

I usually only ask if they want a non dairy milk…. Otherwise no I don’t ask

It’s just better if the people on till ask if 2% milk is good for them for lattes/chai/matchas, and if they want the whip on drinks it includes.

I was told by my TL to do this, so I just do. Takes two seconds and it’s not that deep. Saves complaints.

I only ask for non dairy and iced white mochas. I cannot see why they would want to ask every single person

I’ll say, “this comes with whip. Sound ok?” And they’ll say yes or no. Saves a lot of time. Our store is small enough the person making the drink will even ask again. Don’t take it personally. Clarifying a drink order should not make anyone mad unless they are an asshole, then it’s not worth engaging further. If they order an alt milk, I’ll ask if they still want the whip. Most of the time, they do. Which is odd. I avoid dairy so of course I avoid the whip.

I’m just in the habit of asking “hot or iced?” and “whip or not?” for every order at register…it’s not much work and tbh most people at my store DON’T want whip.

I work at a corporate store and its not policy or standard to ask if they want whipped cream on every drink that gets it. But i do because a TON of customers at my store dont want it on the drinks that come with it so it saves having to do a remake, saves time so the bar partner isnt made to stop their drink sequencing to scoop it off and it prevents customers from screaming at any one of us.

There will be times a customer gets a nonfat mocha and ill ask if they still want the whipped cream and theyll say "oh no definitely not! Thank u for asking!" Or i get that same response for drinks made with 2% or whole milk or heavy cream etc that still get whipped cream with it. So it's just easier to ask
