Training vs being coverage (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by valumptuoushippo
I need a policy reminder, i’m a trainer and multiple times i’ve been training a new barista and i’ve been asked to be coverage or what not while training. It was my understanding that while i’m training, i’m in charge of what we do with that time and I should not have to be coverage while trying to train. Doing both at the same time is the hardest most frustrating part of being a trainer, and I have made that clear, but one of my shifts says that it’s part of a trainers job to be able to do both. I am totally willing to be a unit with my trainee and fill a position if it lines up with my training plan, but I despise being expected to do it. I can’t focus on the new barista efficiency when i’m stressed over cold bar drinks yk?

TLDR: Am I supposed to be coverage and training or am I being taken advantage of by a shift?

You can be coverage while your trainee is doing moduels. That's the only time

yeah , it is part of the trainers job to do both . you’re suppose to be on the floor (coverage) when the person you’re training is doing modules . the only time you’re off the floor is when you’re doing the trainer activities with them in the Ipad . but also , you need to communicate with your shift about it . ask to be put in a flexible position , you might have to be off the floor once your trainee finishes a specific module and it’s their job to be able to continue without you .
