How do y’all feel about the new tipping option on the new card readers (self.starbucksbaristas)

i feel like it would be cool if my store could have it.
TurkeySub9 119 points 8m ago
Took them way longer than necessary. I've been to so many smaller businesses that have had credit card tipping for years. I think it's great that it's finally happening but I think they're just doing it as an added incentive to stay with this shit company.
Hazel_is_Trans [OP] 22 points 8m ago
I feel bad for asking them to choose a option but for the amount of 5 3 and 1 . Like for 30 mins we we’re getting 5 dollars each card transaction
TurkeySub9 26 points 8m ago
Don't feel bad about it fam. The people who come through Starbucks have the money to spend.
yerunclejamba -14 points 8m ago
Would you be willing to explain and defend that position?

I am intrigued as to why you think Starbucks customers have more disposable income than other consumers?
TurkeySub9 19 points 8m ago
Do all customers have the same disposable income? Of course not. That was a generalization. However, if they have the money to come in every single day (sometimes more than once) and spend on average $7 per day, then they have the income to tip a dollar or even more. The amount of times I see people pay for the stranger behind them and not tip is proof of that.

Starbucks is a "luxury service" that is not crucial to daily life. I can imagine countless ways people could use $7 per day to spend on products that are actual necessity. 3 shots of espresso are not necessary to every day life functions. If you're that desperate for caffeine, invest in at home solutions that can easily save hundreds of dollars per year or even per month. Why spend $7 on a coffee when you can purchase a coffee maker, syrup and beans for around $40 and get a dozen or more uses out of the collective supplies?

Are you saying that we shouldn't be getting tipped for this service we work our asses off for? For being ridiculed and yelled at by customers who have higher expectations of us than seemingly every other place? I love being a barista and have been doing it for almost a whole decade and I have never been treated worse by customers until I started working for Starbucks. If people are going to expect this much from us for an unnecessary product, then they better damn we'll be tipping.

They took so long. After I resigned and returned my aprons they do this. Man :/
edreesmiraki 2 points 8m ago
You have to return ur apron? My sister quit a few years back but we still have hers
deakayx 6 points 8m ago
not a requirement, some people just do bc they don’t need them and there’s always a baristas who could!
TurkeySub9 2 points 8m ago
That's how I'm feeling. I'm job searching now to get out of here and we're just getting it starting on Monday.

Same I’m looking to be a pharmacy technician pays a dollar more and same benefits and they are Union
Raging_raven17 2 points 8m ago
As someone who worked as a pharmacy tech and a barista… at the same time… I genuinely can’t tell you which one I hated more💀
nic626 19 points 8m ago
Unionization works. This never would have happened otherwise
Hazel_is_Trans [OP] 9 points 8m ago
I’m still considering leaving tho
JustAnotherRyan5 1 points 8m ago
I hate to break it to you, but the new credit card readers were rolled out with this purpose in mind, and that started well before the union stuff became big.
mama_niffs 14 points 8m ago
What's y'all's salary. Closer to a fast food chain or closer to restaurant?
ConsistentCow5848 6 points 8m ago
Base pay is $15 an hour for baristas so I'd say more in line with a restaurant
mama_niffs 19 points 8m ago
More in line with a restaurant would be under minimum wage where the tips are needed to compensate.
Hazel_is_Trans [OP] 15 points 8m ago
Tipping culture is shit (I still tip though)

I never going back to be a sever
lewabwee 8 points 8m ago
Fast food pays more than the minimum wage but it’s hardly enough these days. I’m kinda worried companies are going to start encouraging tipping for employees in these sorts of roles so they can pay employees less, maximize profits all while giving employees the added incentive to please the customers so they’ll leave something extra for them. Tipping culture sucks and it’s built off of the kindness of customers in a weird way.
Hot-Independence8670 6 points 8m ago
i don’t think tipping at starbucks is always necessary, in the past i usually just threw in my change if i paid cash. the only time i think they’re an asshole if they don’t tip is if they come in the drive thru and order 10+ items
ConsistentCow5848 3 points 8m ago
My bad I was thinking you meant like cooks or something along those lines, not servers

My only qualm is when it’s bright outside people can’t read it.
pacoboiii 5 points 8m ago
Our store every morning, the sun rises where the drive thru window is, so not only am I getting blinded, but yea, I’m having to make my wrist be double jointed just to properly let the customer see the reader.
Hazel_is_Trans [OP] 1 points 8m ago
I haven’t had to deal with this yet only a bee
mattbones 8 points 8m ago
I hate explainining it but the first morning we made double or triple what we normally do. Jus gotta put the nicest petson on window
ggdabs 7 points 8m ago
It’s exhausting having to explain to every person how to use the machine. Needs instructions on it
badatlife15 7 points 8m ago
We haven’t gotten it yet, but seeing how much ppl struggle just with the card reader in general/not being able to hear me I feel like this is going to cause delays. I’m glad for it, but also there are def customers I don’t want to have to interact with any more than I have to, so this just creates another layer of interaction.
marklandia 2 points 8m ago
So it’s not the Square tablets everyone is used to?
miniinovaa 3 points 8m ago
Nope it’s the same like machine thing, with the added feature

Edit: typo

I love it, I dont have cash on me anymore so it lets me tip again
Hazel_is_Trans [OP] 1 points 8m ago
If you had the app you could tip but now I feel like anyone can
deakayx 3 points 8m ago
this thread is the only thing i’ve heard abt this new feature but i’m excited to get it! my store has a lot of customers who wish they could tip with card and having to explain that to tip off card you have to have paid with the app or made a mobile order is frustrating when so many other (smaller) businesses have had this for years !
MarslikesLeeks 2 points 8m ago
It’s about time !
mrcupcake18 1 points 8m ago
I love it but it is very awkward in the drive through because I have to physically hand out the card reader and I always get those “please don’t judge me eyes” lmao or they insert their card and they just wait there and are wondering what’s happening and I’m like “it’s going to just ask you a question first before you can pay” 😂😂
Stemajos 1 points 8m ago
Honestly, it’s kinda annoying cuz when I’m on drive I have to go slower by putting the card scanner outside waiting for the customer to decide to tip or not, it was faster when we could just scan the card and give it back
Intelligent_Wash9000 1 points 8m ago
My store doesn’t have it, but at my store in drive thru we all take their card to scan/swipe/tap ourselves…. So it’ll be weird to have to start offering it to them/shoving the card reader in their face lol
