I’ve been working at Starbucks for a couple months and still don’t understand how ONE cake pop cost almost $3 USD. (i.redd.it)
submitted by DaggerHDHD
the1noir 345 points 8m ago
Cause people will buy them lol.
jazzysoranio 77 points 8m ago
That’s really the whole answer right there. Why would they charge $1.00 when customers are willing to pay $3.00? Prices might go down when customers start going somewhere else.

But most likely prices wouldn’t actually start going down, rather, the company itself would just start to fade away like Kmart or Sears. Once a company has gone down a specific business strategy for so many years, especially one that’s proven successful in the past, it’s very hard for them to reverse course. Starbucks marketed itself as a semi-luxury brand in the past decades and has in the last 7 or 8 years pivoted their image a little into being more ubiquitous for mass appeal, which helped to broaden the customer base. BUT prices have NOT been adjusted to appeal to a mass customer base. They haven’t adjusted anything with prices because they haven’t needed to.

But when/if customers start to realize that going to starbucks isn’t actually that enjoyable anymore, and not worth the premium prices, we’ll start to see a huge drop off of customer numbers. I don’t know if that will ever happen, but it’s at least very likely. We’re seeing what I think is a sharp increase in dissatisfied customers that haven’t quite made the journey from dissatisfied to disenchanted yet. They realize that they haven’t actually enjoyed coming to Starbucks in a while, but haven’t quite taken the step to breaking their Starbucks habit yet. Will loyal Starbucks customers start voting with their wallets anytime soon? Only time will tell. I’m not too hopeful that cake pop prices will ever go down though.

I’m seeing small/indie coffeeshops coming back up and thriving again all over my city, while so many SBux stores have had to close (blaming the pandemic and being short-staffed). SBux was once a “luxury” but cannot say they’re any kind of craft coffee when their biggest competitors are McDonald’s and Dunkin. We’re fast food / fast casual and the quality shows. The prices aren’t suitable, but shareholders keep expecting more profit every year (and they’ve already squeezed it out of staff to the point that this union movement was inevitable/necessary). The new business model just isn’t sustainable, without completely throwing out the Third Place / cafe experience and turning stores into walk-up/drive-through/delivery factories. They already proved it *can* be done when cafes (and their bathrooms) closed through the pandemic and Uber Eats deliveries started up.
sammieduck69420 15 points 8m ago
They’ve already proven it can and will be done. There used to be 7 stars in my town and there’s only 4 now. Even the one Pete’s in town was driven out by rent prices so there’s only really local coffee here, with the first starbucks location I worked at closing literally months after I left due to customer connections apparently. The busiest mall downtown was one of the first more recent mass losses that honestly kinda surprised me. I figured with the sheer volume of humans in the area shopping it was a given for a starbucks but I guess they ruined themselves
suneimi 14 points 8m ago
My store dropped down to a 23 on customer connections and my SM told us if we can bring it up to 65 she’ll take us all out to dinner. Lol, not possible - we’re the highest delivery store in our district, so our cafe customers suffer. Also, unless we’re going to a Michelin-starred restaurant, I’m not interested in jumping that hurdle. 23 to 65… 🤣🤣🤣
JeromeBaritone 3 points 8m ago
Is that mall owned by a landlord that had litigation against Starbucks?
holtpj 3 points 8m ago
I was at a mall by my house recently and the Sbux inside was closed. I too was surprised, always had people at it. I asked the girl working at the store I was at when it happened, and she said it was constantly crowded but it wasn't always open 1st thing in the morning or closed early sometimes (probably staffing issues). So lots of mall employees and regulars began bringing their own or stopping somewhere else on their way.
CheesiestSlice 57 points 8m ago
And are happy to do so.
Meliodas666 5 points 8m ago
Beat me to it lmao
Kaluskydrak 132 points 8m ago
The specialty ones are 3.25 😭😭
DaggerHDHD [OP] 57 points 8m ago
That’s the same price as a grande pike
lewabwee -34 points 8m ago
That’s the same price as this tallboy.
ithinkimanpc 115 points 8m ago
or the little vanilla scones for like almost a $1.50 each but they come in a pack of 4 lol
testingaurora 59 points 8m ago
The little vanilla scones used to be .75 cents each or three for $2 I believe. I haven’t seen them in ages, it was the only pastry I could eat there
psionicillusionist 34 points 8m ago
I actually mind that less, because they're like a cake pop without the stick. $1.50 wouldn't be a terrible price for a cake pop imo.
redwinencatz 7 points 8m ago
That's what they used to cost...
psionicillusionist 1 points 8m ago
Truth. I miss it :c
sunflowercupcakee 25 points 8m ago
Since I know longer work for the siren but love those little morsels of happiness, I buy them from Trader Joe’s like 10 for $5. Taste almost the same.
aspiringgrandpa 13 points 8m ago
WHAT are they called at trader joe’s bc i will buy their whole stock
ithinkimanpc 1 points 8m ago
omg yes, i saw them last week and was so close to buying
DaggerHDHD [OP] 96 points 8m ago
I always feel like I’m ripping off the customers whenever I ring them up for it lol
ItzBoogieMan 58 points 8m ago
I offer cups of water with ice if they try to buy a water bottle first. It’s not much but it’s honest work.
DaggerHDHD [OP] 26 points 8m ago
You know what? I might start doing that too
Anon31780 13 points 8m ago
I would, but feel like that’s somehow screwing my other wage zombies out of hours. I don’t much care about Hungry Howie’s stock prices, but it’s sucks to see folks struggling to make rent. :/
ItzBoogieMan 19 points 8m ago
Ringing up cups make you get more hours because it’s labour.

The company hoards most of the profits anyway, fuck Starbucks.
Jew_3 9 points 8m ago
It took me a minute to figure out what you meant. Hungry Howies is a privately owned, Michigan Based, pizza chain. I could figure out why their non existent stock prices mattered in an Sbux Reddit. 😂
cherrythot 4 points 8m ago
I didn’t even know Hungry Howies was Michigan based, I also had no idea what they were talking about
WubbaLubbaDubDub87 76 points 8m ago
Wait until you hear about $10 coffees.
nicolelynnejones 74 points 8m ago
Every time I punch in my drink to mark out and I watch that $10 cancel out to $0 I’m so shocked it even costs that much
dirtychai0218 75 points 8m ago
a short pumpkin spice latte with no modifications is just a few cents under $6
Canadiansbux 43 points 8m ago
I am in a grocery store kiosk. People will pay $3.95 for 1 sclice of banana bread. They could just buy a whole loaf at the bakery for $5, and it's just as good as ours🤷‍♀️
throwawaystarbiegirl 3 points 8m ago
to be fair, i also do this and it’s because i just want a quick snack and not a giant loaf of bread lol
violentfemme17 29 points 8m ago
I remember when you used to get a discount buying them in twos, they were like a buck .25 a piece back then
gabby24681 11 points 8m ago
WHAT are your partner numbers?
violentfemme17 12 points 8m ago
Lol 153****

Remember how nasty the spinach feta wraps used to be?
pinkshadedgirafe 8 points 8m ago
I worked there from 2016-2018 and it was that way back then. My numbers were 227xxxx
Rough-Tie-3084 2 points 8m ago
I started in 2019 and they got rid of the discount a couple months after I was hired. Way back in the day you’d get 2 cake pops for like $2.50, I’m so sad it’s doubled
ambibot 23 points 8m ago
When I worked for the bucks I didn't get it either. But it's $3 to make my kids happy and quiet for 5 minutes. Totally worth it. Haha
MarieCrepes 16 points 8m ago
At my old job, $3 would get you 6 quality cookies. At Starbucks you get one shitty cookie. I don't get it.
Rip-Any 8 points 8m ago
It’s all about the brand, baby!
chinksauces 16 points 8m ago
because it’s ✨starbucks✨
Old-Ingenuity5175 13 points 8m ago
I work at a licensed store and a birthday cake pop goes for $3.65. It’s insane.
Lcolecrochet 12 points 8m ago
I remember when these used to be 2 for $3…
Deep_Mission_4998 10 points 8m ago
Every weekend this lady wants 6-8 cake pops individually bagged for her grandkids or something. She is sweet, but damn to have that money!
Vistril69 10 points 8m ago
I work at a kiosk on the weekends and the parents always bring up how overpriced they are when they give in to their kids buying them one. I always agree.
sam_thegod 9 points 8m ago
The people who buy these are bots
Chasey_boii 7 points 8m ago
What I’ll never understand is why people come in to buy a bottle of water. They’re… we have free water. I always make sure they aren’t interested in a cup of ice water first
Bright_Earth_8282 7 points 8m ago
I think they are a rip. But my son loves them. He’s six and I am teaching him math, so I give him a budget wherever we go (Starbucks included) and he makes the math work, so I guess it’s worth it to him. But I don’t get it either.
Persnickety-sass1015 7 points 8m ago
How about $1.25 to top your drink with cold foam??
VanillaGorilla602 7 points 8m ago
what about SB upping the price of every drink when the holiday ones come out, at my store it's almost 7$ for a grande mocha frap
Magnumxl711 7 points 8m ago
A lady came thru and bought 6 yesterday, like at that point just buy a whole cake from Walmart?
Responsible_Snow7109 5 points 8m ago
I had a lady come to my store on more than one occasion to get 25 cake pops for a little girls birthday party. She actually could have gotten something better made at a grocery store bakery for cheaper and better quality and u would get more out of it
Tvdrone16 7 points 8m ago
You're paying top price to shut your kid up
Dependent_Magazine89 7 points 8m ago
I honestly don't feel bad at all for these people, I get it for free and that's all I care about 💀
lilleefrancis 6 points 8m ago
At my licensed store they were $4 and once I had a lady straight up just ask to buy all the cake pops we had first thing in the morning like it was nothing
plantainpapii 6 points 8m ago
It’s the Tomato panini price for me.

Remember I rang it up one time and the customer literally said “what the fuck”.

Much like them, I was befuddled and I double checked the price. I laughed and said “yeah, I guess it really is that.”

They bought it anyway 🤭

I forgot how many calories are in that panini but it isnt even enough to satiate you for more than 3 hours — especially if youre an active person. Like if you walked to our starbucks, ordered that panini, ate it, walked back to wherever you came from, them calories is GONE.
Advanced-Grapefruit4 4 points 8m ago
And that's exactly why the price keep going up....cause they bought it anyway. Starbucks knows people will still pay these crazy prices.
badbaristuh 6 points 8m ago
FYI — doesn’t look like you have your numbers linked to your app! Now that you’re a partner you can receive your discount when mobile ordering/scanning your app (instead of shouting your numbers like usual). Here’s a (slightly outdated, but still accurate I think) PDF on how to do it: https://globalassets.starbucks.com/assets/7196C075-8D66-49B4-896D-BFB7E34FD73F.pdf

borrowedurmumsvcard 5 points 8m ago
the reindeer one is $3.85 at my store
Koalastars009 4 points 8m ago
$3.85 for us too in a franchise store. Banana loaf is almost $5 now
icedcoffeenoclassic 5 points 8m ago
Some of them still think that we make the food and will pay for the ✨ homemade quality 😭😭😭😭😭
Antique_Bottle_5617 4 points 8m ago
starbucks is so good at their marketing that people will be willing to buy the products just because it’s starbucks. corporations always know what they’re doing when charging insane amounts
RoccoSteal 4 points 8m ago
It’s the stick. They were individually inserted in Queen Elizabeth’s ass. And now the new king.
nobodysomebodyanybdy 4 points 8m ago
I miss sneaking a couple of them during my shifts for a sugar rush lol now I cave and buy them sometimes for the nostalgia
sanjiless 4 points 8m ago
someone spent $20 on cake pops the other day like bffr 😟
bigheftyhooker 4 points 8m ago
I used to be bothered by Starbucks prices too. But when you consider that what people are actually paying for is convenience and service, it makes sense.

Yeah, it’s cheaper to make your own at home. But it takes like an hour, makes a mess, and your back will be sore. Considering the alternative, we should charge more… but then we would have to sell quality products
yaboiblackcheeseboi 3 points 8m ago
I remember when they were like a dollar when they first came out
lilmissambersue 3 points 8m ago
We had a delivery one day for 1 cake pop. 1 single cake pop. That had to be like $10 to get delivered
bunnysbigcookie 3 points 8m ago
inflation, friend. when i started in 2017, a short pike was under $2 and i think some pastries were too. now getting something under $3 is near impossible
Wild_Nature_2638 3 points 8m ago
Capitalism?
Necessary_Low939 3 points 8m ago
I remember when they are 1.50 lol… ten years ago
CobaltLemon 3 points 8m ago
I got a cake pop for my son and after paying 12% in taxes it was almost 4 dollars. For a small ball of cake on a stick.
Joshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh1 3 points 8m ago
My tarbucks sells them for $3.65 and people buy em up
Alec_Malenfant 3 points 8m ago
Yeah its a ripoff. Starbucks buys them for $0.49
BunnieSPH 3 points 8m ago
Same reason why you should unionize.
Starbucks is greedy.
Katerade__ 3 points 8m ago
That’s a yummy $3, I’ll hear nothing less
AssignmentBitter5701 2 points 8m ago
My store that cake pop is like $3.85
Zeldaluvr2007 2 points 8m ago
They’re $3 now?? When I worked at a Safeway Starbucks, they were $1.50! 😳
urmomisaweenie 2 points 8m ago
the last time i bought one it was $3.25 + tax lmfao
Ajskdjurj 2 points 8m ago
I think they are like 4 something in nyc I have to check when I go in today.
nickintheback08 2 points 8m ago
Let us know when you figure it out
BitchyNordicBarista 2 points 8m ago
Because these little demons had a grip on my sanity towards the end of my time being a barista. The chocolate ones, & the promise of eating a “broken” one were the only reason I woke up for a while there.

Now I just like how chocolate-y they are and I will gladly treat myself once in a while
drubhub 1 points 7m ago
When I was In high school, about 10 years ago, the cake pops were 2/$3 and the grande iced white mocha was $3.54. But, back then everyone was getting paid $7.25 and McDonald’s had an extensive dollar menu
