no space to take breaks?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by marilynmansonsbitch
so at my store in the back room we used to have a table set up where we could take our breaks and have a meal. just yesterday, they took our table away and told us we weren’t allowed to take breaks back there, and since the lobby was open now we were required to take our breaks in the lobby now. im doing research, and the only thing I can find is we are required to have space to take breaks but it must be considered off the working area or the floor so to speak. this seems unfair :( our lobby is already so busy it doesn’t even seem relaxing to go sit out there for 10 minutes, and going all the way to my car for a 10 sounds so extra. is this allowed? is there really no compromise??

All you need is to hire someone who is breastfeeding then they’ll be legally required to give the space back, because they have to provide a private spot to pump that isn’t a bathroom. I say this as a pumping mom, who has another co-worker who is pumping too.

I'm going back to work at the siren and my toddler is breastfeeding still, but he's 16 months and I don't intend to pump unless I run into clog issues since I'm just going for 20 hours a week. Gonna do 4 days with 5 hour shifts. I'm letting him self wean.

However, if my coworkers needed a place to take their break I'd definitely HAVE to pump at work.

Most of my store goes to their cars. I go outside and find a spot to hide

I was actually asked to get a customer (by said customer) a water while I was on my lunch waiting for my drink the other day. I was baffled more than anything else. The man literally walked up behind me (no headset or apron on, on the lobby side of the bar) and said “excuse me, I know you work here. Can you get me a tall ice water?” Like wtf . They need to give y’all your back room back.

I make it a general rule that if I'm not on the clock or if I'm on my break, i just don't talk to anyone in the lobby except to order my drink. A few jobs ago i picked up this habit to avoid getting in trouble for ignoring customers who asked me for things and didn't get myself in trouble by saying anything rude.

That’s a great thing! I’ve just never had it happen and was absolutely baffled. Luckily my store has space in back, so I’ll be chilling back there from now on.

Unfortunately, what they are doing is perfectly legal

I'd be pissed as I have no car and I certainly can't hire an uber to sit there and let me eat in their car out of the snow.

It being crowded is annoying, if your store has a space outside to eat, I recommend that. With it getting colder now though def make sure you have a jacket and maybe even gloves if you're going to make that a habit

To mentally get out of the environment of the store, I recommend bringing some headphones. A break from the store music and the sounds of baristas and customers talking amongst each other is a big part of what makes a break a break, to me!

Had the same issue :( When I posted the same question people were so mean to me on here LOL but it sucks and I’m sorry OP. I unfortunately found nothing either, like people don’t wanna take their breaks in the lobby its so loud half the time and not everyone has a car😭
Electrical_Metal_106 1 points 8m ago
That sucks-you definitely need a place to rest away from the customers and the playlists! That seems like a crap rule. I’d appeal to my DM for a better solution.
