Got passed up for ssv… again… (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by hungrymuffin123
Been with the bucks for 3.5 years, and about a year ago I finally decided to grow in the company and gain some leadership experience. My first attempt was at another store since my stores gears were grinding way too slowly, but was told I still had some things to work on. Then, finally I have the chance at my own store (after asking for development for about 9 months) and I get passed up again, when all the partners at my store agree I should’ve gotten it. Im so over corporates politics and out of touch managers playing favorites.

Same

i got passed up three times and Im over it

Our new SM said she was going to rehire an old partner from her other store as the ssv, like okay

That’s what happened to me, she rehired an old partner she knew, and then immediately promoted him after two months.

I'd contact your dm about them getting preferential treatment.

If you're willing to transfer stores in order to develop, check the message board on the my daily app. Other SM's will usually post there if their store is hiring ssv's😊

My DM’s just as bad, I’m definitely looking outside of district, it’ll be closer to home anyway!

It's really not all that. And maybe you need a different store. But at this point I'm a Ssv for the pay. The stress of it can be a bit much and "what you are expected "

To all who have been passed up on a promotion recently, I’ve been there before, the best way to develop at Starbucks is to take it into your own hands, your store should have an ops excellence field guide, which has info about what traits Starbucks is looking for in a barista who is ready to promote, the next step after that is to apply for open positions in your area, I know it sucks to move stores but this is often the preferable situation as it takes time for baristas to change their view of a peer and it makes coaching harder for you as the shift. I just finally got tired of waiting to move up to asm and decided to look on careers.Starbucks and it was a good move as I found an open position, applied for it and am now interviewing in 2 weeks. Another big helper is to take shifts at other stores, it will help give you something to speak about in your eventual interview for ssv.

Lastly I wanted to empower every barista who wants to move up, that it is actually part of every partners job to help coach each other to achieve “greatness” (🤢).

TLDR: You have to apply for promotions, it’s the actual career progression path now. And baristas should not fear coaching peers or even their leaders. (I’ve coached the DM when they have forgotten to wash hands or check in)

Did you ask the manager for feedback and what you can improve on?

Obviously nobody here knows you and your capabilities but if you have been passed over twice you definitely need to ask for feedback so it doesn't happen again.

She said I was super super close, but I need more work on behavioral coaching, which I think is bs because that opportunity has to present itself, and also depending on the situation doesn’t feel like my responsibility while just a barista. She told me I was essentially next in line. But between me and the 4 other partners at my store who applied, the 3 most senior partners all got passed over.

Happened to me, too. Also been here 3.5 years, just became a barista trainer, too. They keep hiring transfers as shifts and hiring people who aren't even from Starbucks. I need the money because I'm unhoused, and they keep giving it to people who don't even work at my store and are completely incompetent. I'm so tired. My manager keeps saying "You're going to be a great manager" and "you have a leadership mindset", and then does nothing about it. I need the money bad. I'm hungry.

Same, I’m at a point where it’s promotion or leave because I’m struggling financially. I might put in a few applications at another store, but I’m not banking on Starbucks anymore.

Yeah, good luck. I had to get a second job a few months ago.

I’m in a similar spot and just applied for an SSV position at a different store.
