Are we not suppose to ask people to throw away their own trash? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ggdabs
My manager scolded me for asking a woman to throw her trash away instead of handing it to me and ended up comping her drink. I would think asking someone to throw away their own trash is not disrespectful.
[deleted] 150 points 7m ago
was it through the window? I remember long ago that it can be considered a health code violation to take in peoples trash from outside.

I flat tell people i’m not comfortable touching their trash.
ggdabs [OP] 119 points 7m ago
No we don’t have a drive threw it was a woman handing me her empty cup at the handoff. I pointed behind her to the trash cans and asked her to please throw it away there
Responsible_Snow7109 110 points 7m ago
Wait u got scolded for telling a customer the trash can is literally behind them when they wanted u to handle their trash?? What is ur manager on? They can get fukt lol that is in no way rude to politely remind a customer that there is conveniently a trash can right behind them for customer convenience. Thats crazy u got scolded for that
ggdabs [OP] 64 points 7m ago
I agree, I thought maybe it was my tone because it was peak and I was the only one on bar so I didn’t use my customer service voice lol but even my coworker on reg agreed with me.
Responsible_Snow7109 30 points 7m ago
No matter your tone though, I feel like your manager would have still been mad either way because they seem like the type of manager that will literally bow down to a customer no matter how unhinged they are because they're getting mad that you simply reminded a customer that theres a trash can behind them. With the whole tone thing aside, it seems like ur manager more so thinks its rude that u didnt take the customers trash for them 🙄 it makes zero sense when the trash was literally behind them

as an assistant manager, I would’ve done the same thing.

we have had customers complain but with how COVID has been, I am not comfortable touching other’s peoples trash.
you’re completely valid.
NyanBecca 16 points 7m ago
Another ASM I also would have done the same thing. The policy never changed from COVID, we don’t take drinks back from customers.
Lightheaded_gamer 10 points 7m ago
I remembered being scolded for doing the same thing when I was stationed at food. Like I am not gonna touch trash as I am handling food in the middle of the rush , not sorry.
baristatwinkie 3 points 7m ago
There’s no place in North America where ur supposed to touch customer used product when there is a provided trash can, it’s pretty basic Health & Safety.
sten45 21 points 7m ago
The no trash in the DT window was a hill I would die on
friendlySkeletor 14 points 7m ago
I had a guy leave several used cups on the DT window sill thing bc i refused to take them into the window once. I honestly still don't know what i was meant to do about it but my ssv ended up taking over dealing with the guy thankfully.
looker009 139 points 7m ago
When I was still a partner, I handed teens broom and dustpan and told them to clean up after themselves. You're not her personal cleaning person. Tell your manager with Covid that you do not feel comfortable handling someone else trash.
ggdabs [OP] 90 points 7m ago
I tried, he told me that I was violating the 3rd place by being rude. I am immunocompromised and touching people’s used cups it an issue for me
happyprince22 69 points 7m ago
you’re not supposed to handle customers trash. there are trash cans in the lobby for them, and if they’re in the dt they keep their trash. your manager is wrong either way lmao
Late_Pomelo_999 24 points 7m ago
Yeah, it’s technically against standard to handle trash that isn’t our own
looker009 29 points 7m ago
There is nothing rude about asking a customer to handle their own trash.
CharmyFrog 20 points 7m ago
The first place is my own house. I’m going to start telling my mom that she is violating my 1st place next time she asks me to do the dishes.
Indica-daddy 11 points 7m ago
I’m also immunocompromised and refuse the same—regardless of how the customer perceives it. I’m a gentle and kind person who is allowed to keep myself safe. Your manager needs to be coached, not you. It’s unsafe to handle other people’s trash, especially as someone preparing food and drink for many people in a day. This, imo, is grounds to speak to the DM—that way your manager can be properly coached by someone getting paid to do just that.

We are not allowed to take trash at our store
Kaywin 3 points 7m ago
Even if you weren't, that's a basic food safety concept - we can't accept people's garbage, it's unsanitary.

I would have put on my customer service voice and helpfully pointed out where the trash cans are for their trash. Usually they're by the exit to the place anyway, right? So it's not out of their way to, y'know, do the socially acceptable thing.

Unless the trash was overflowing, I they should bus their stuff themselves.
SNES182 3 points 7m ago
Leave them on the counter and make them pick them up.

Nope nope nope touching someone else’s trash in a pandemic is asking for sick. Tell them you’re not comfortable touching someone’s garbage, and if they are still upset, contact partner relations
BrotatoChip04 16 points 7m ago
There is absolutely nothing at all wrong with being a janitor, but unless that’s my actual job I’m not cleaning up customer trash. There’s 3 trash cans for a reason. On top of that I feel like it’s just plain rude to hand someone your trash and expect them to throw it away
_paperbackhead_ 16 points 7m ago
It’s a health code violation at that
Perihelion77 10 points 7m ago
LITERALLY had someone drop trash on the ground, turn to us, then ask us to pick it up TODAY. What is in the air rn??
Hazel_is_Trans 7 points 7m ago
I would say unfortunately we are unable to throw away trash for you but you can throw it away in the trash bin behind you
guccigoosie 7 points 7m ago
I’m not sure what the official policy is, but when I have repeat offenders, I’ll ask them politely at the register to please clean up after themselves when they leave.
darkwolf523 6 points 7m ago
Why the fuck did your manager scold you for asking someone to please throw your trash away? Is your manager high?
ggdabs [OP] 3 points 7m ago
I wish I knew. I personally do not think he likes me.
darkwolf523 1 points 7m ago
Oof. Why that
ggdabs [OP] 2 points 7m ago
He only speaks to me when he is critiquing me and after one conversation we had about not wanting to work with a certain person he just didn’t schedule me for a week.
darkwolf523 2 points 7m ago
Damn. Talk to your dm?
tacticalcop 6 points 7m ago
the amount of people that would hand me their trash through the drive thru window, some people even asked me to throw out trash from ANOTHER RESTAURANT!

one man, when i told him i couldn’t throw out his garbage *from sonic*, LEFT IT ON THE SHELF OF THE DRUVE THRU FOR ME TO FIND. i can’t begin to describe the desire i had to strangle this person.
maceace101 6 points 7m ago
Same thing at our store. We have to pick their trash up. There is a lady who knows this and laughs when she leaves it :) so much for all this “stand up for yourselves” that they had a couple months ago for anti union stuff. Screw this company
SelloutDude 5 points 7m ago
Fuck all them, throw away your own trash, it’s a health code violation.
Lanky_Rip_5414 3 points 7m ago
We are still not taking stuff back through the window.
pinkjortz 3 points 7m ago
We’re not supposed to take customer trash behind the bar, which includes through the window, because I’m pretty sure it’s a health code violation. That’s why there’s a café trash can.
Toomanyboringpeople 3 points 7m ago
Pretty sure it’s against health code to take trash thru the window or over the counter, we always say no when customers ask us
besoinducafe 3 points 7m ago
We do NOT take trash from people. Your manager is wrong.
Voxxyvoo 3 points 7m ago
if ur manager was more of brown-noser i'd mistake them for a deer with how spineless and timid they are.
Gameb0i6 3 points 7m ago
We are not allowed to cuz it’s a food safety issue. Like throw your own trash away nasty ass
jazzysoranio 3 points 7m ago
Wtf is wrong with your manager?! Literally encouraging customers to treat partners like trash cans. They’ve just earned the store another loyal shitty person. It just amazes me how many partners are literally carefully curating the worst possible customer base for themselves. They actively give reasons for the worst people to keep coming back for more while also ignoring the actual nice customers. We’re not trash cans! When is it ever normal human behavior to just hand your trash to a stranger instead of putting it in the trash can that’s right there? Honestly, that’s even worse than throwing your trash on the ground because now instead of being lazy or thoughtless, you’re actually actively seeking out someone to deal with and touch your dirty garbage.
cvpocoffee 3 points 7m ago
WAIT ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?
The amount of things we already put up with customers and we also have to throw their trash for them when there’s a bin somewhere in the lobby? Bro
Necessary_Low939 3 points 7m ago
When they leave the trash on the hand off etc. I’ll tell them to throw away the trash. If they left it on the tables that they eat I’ll clean it.
SimulaGargonchuatron 2 points 7m ago
Your manager is emotionally immature
MellowLellow1219 2 points 7m ago
I’m in the airport and people regularly leave their trash in our counters and if I see them doing it, I point out there’s a trash can about 5 steps away from them. I don’t think it’s wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️ we’re not maids and while keeping the store clean is part of our job, we also primarily sell to adults who are more than capable of throwing away their straw wrapper or the receipt they said they needed
acnh1222 2 points 7m ago
There’s one woman who comes in every day and gets an iced coffee and a cup of water. She always only drinks a little bit of the water and then puts it on the side of the trash can rather than in it. On multiple occasions, people accidentally knocked it over because they didn’t realize there was a cup of liquid balanced on a trash bin. We’ve gotten to the point where we’re like “when you’re done with the water, you can throw it in the trash rather than leaving it out!” She’s the sweetest, but she just never throws away the water!
looker009 1 points 7m ago
Next time, hand her the mop

It’s about going above and beyond for guests
ggdabs [OP] 1 points 7m ago
With that in mind, I’m not willing to out myself at risk for any guest. Being immunocompromised makes me more at risk to getting sick, therefore I will not touch a customers used cup/trash.
