At My Wits End ( Grande Rant) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by uh-no-why
I became a shift with the hope that I would be able to fix my store, but I feel like I have done so little. I’m doing ASU full time as well as working 38 to 40 hours a week. I’m tired. I go to my SM with problems, nothing is done about them. I have baristas snapping on me that used to be supportive for reasons I mostly can’t control. I have until May and then I’m done with my degree and could start finding another job. But I’m going into grad school after this and the flexibility of this job would be nice to have. I’m just so tired, I’m so burnt out. I don’t even know if I can make it until May. I’m so drained, I’ve started asking other shifts how they manage to do it (and some of them for so long). I’m just exhausted all the time. I don’t get much time to myself. I think tomorrow might break me (I open and it’s red cup day). We haven’t gotten our weekly order yet and don’t even have the red cups yet. My patience is wearing thin. I just can’t do it anymore. The Siren has stolen the last of my soul.

Sorry this is so unorganized, but I had to rant somewhere.

Just so you know, as soon as your last semester starts the tuition should already be paid, so as long as you can hold out until January you should be all set for tuition(I'm not 100% on that so I'd definitely verify)

So one thing I have learned from my leadership course is that:
People are generally against change, it will take a lot to change old habits.
You need to focus on the task AND relational aspect of your job (maybe they’re snapping because they’re stressed, they could think you’re talking out of your ass, or they may be scared of change), take care of yourself: going to school full time AND working is hard. I know you’re tired because I do the same thing. It’ll be okay. Figure out what you care about and what you don’t. People aren’t cleaning drains? Fine. Delegate it out so it’s done. Inventory is wrong: “order over or under so it evens out”, baristas are being dicks, coach it. If coaching doesn’t work, take it to your SM. You will not fix all the issues that Starbucks has. You just can’t. You have a mix of people who this is their first job and they don’t care, they’re there because it pays the bills, or it’s their stepping stone. You deal with it.

If you’re looking to promote to ASM or above, partner with your SM and communicate why you wanna do this. All in all, it’s not on your shoulders. You can only do so much babe. Keep your head up.
