Only 1/3 of our abandoned drinks yesterday🥲 (i.redd.it)

this is nuts.
beaudebonair 13 points 7m ago
And a huge waste. I know it's a multi-billion dollar corporation, but waste always upsets me, like I feel bad. A knot in my chest, considering how today's climate is in food insecurity.

Ya it's just a drink, but it costs as much as a value meal at McDonald's practically. Why as a Barista back in 2008, I'd hand abandoned drinks off for free in the lobby anyone just hanging out or waiting for a drink in line, who wants to take it home so it doesn't get canned.
[deleted] 3 points 7m ago
I still offer food to my baristas or customers in the lobby if they are being thrown out that night, even though we aren’t allowed to.
MarieCrepes 113 points 7m ago
Same, we threw out at least 60 drinks. It took up a whole counter top
maine_coon2123 110 points 7m ago
I wish there was a way to know wait times before ordering so people can plan ahead and baristas don’t have to do all this extra work and waste : (
PetMySquid 94 points 7m ago
I’d assume it’s a hard decision by corporate. Imagine 60 drinks need to get thrown out, and only 10% of people or so actually come back in and complain they didn’t get their drink because it was too busy. In Starbuck’s eyes (and more specifically their wallet) they still sold over 50 drinks. So if they were to put “wait times are around 30 minutes for mobile orders at this location” on their app they would not only NOT sell those 50 drinks, they’d likely deter more people from ordering on top of that. They don’t care.
StaaannnM_97 47 points 7m ago
Yes so accurate, this is so true unfortunately. They will never change their algorithm for fear of scaring away potential customers :/
mama_bibi 3 points 7m ago
Yea but I would imagine a decent % of those people called and got a refund. Probably not all of them but I would. I also wouldn't dont go to starbucks when I'm off so this is just in theory
chef_vet 13 points 7m ago
It does tell you. At least mine does. I went to order online yesterday and it said 28-30 min prep time. Any other time it's like 3-5 or 7-12 or something fairly low.
fredforthered 7 points 7m ago
It shows on the app, but knowing what we know about people, they ignore it. My app will usually show 9-12 minutes for the store closest to my work in the am, and I order 15-18 minutes ahead to be safe. If I see prep time of more than 15 minutes, I’ll skip it because I know my order will somehow get messed up because it’s busy.

Order: some size Americano with an add shot and light water, sometimes I’ll get a larger cup if I know that light water to the store is almost regular, but occasionally, it really gets screwy and I get light water for the next cup size.

Favorite order: Sumatra or a SE Asia Reserve like Da Nang, but not a lot of stores have clovers 🥲

Beneficial-Weird-817 85 points 7m ago
What on earth, how does this happen?
PetMySquid 317 points 7m ago
Not enough staffing for red cup day, turning off mobiles was out of the question presumably, customers got pissed waiting so long and were running late for work due to being behind 30-40 minutes on mobiles. But hey big daddy Starbucks is wondering why customer connection scores and drive times will be shitty for the week.
Apprehensive-You5261 51 points 7m ago
Then they come back later in the day saying they ordered a drink and realised they didn’t have time and had to go. We got a lot of those yesterday
catpants243 3 points 7m ago
When I was trapped in the cafe trying to tame people from being angry I was getting so many people asking if they could just come back later and I basically told them they could go get a refund, but I can't make any promises about getting them remade later. There would have been a hundred+ people looking for them.
Creative-Clothes-520 63 points 7m ago
You get swamped with mobile and your wait time for mobiles goes so high that people say fuck it and ditch it on red cup day this makes sense but I bet your store manager wasn’t thrilled lol
RaptorClaw27 68 points 7m ago
Starbucks needs to find a way for customers to recall an order that hasn't been pulled from the sticker queue yet. Like, if I'm standing there waiting for my drink and I know I can't wait anymore, I should be able to initiate a mobile refund for a drink that hasn't been pulled, especially if it is past the quoted wait time. It could just disappear from the tablet and baristas would never have to worry about it.
HawkSpotter 18 points 7m ago
YES, this ^^^
SnowMune 9 points 7m ago
I agree, another reason being when someone will place a mobile order right as they get to the drive thru speaker. Their order comes from the mobile orders printer, not the drive thru printed, and they’re at the very end of the line so we end up having to look up the order on our POS to even see what they got 🙄
Aliciarox11189 53 points 7m ago
I believe it. We weren't allowed to turn off mobiles
Ricenoodlerolls 44 points 7m ago
Putting holiday drinks out of stock>turning off mobiles AHAHHAHAHAHAHHHAH
ossarylark 19 points 7m ago
Best idea ever was to mark out honey citrus mint permanently.
graham1987 36 points 7m ago
i wonder why the earth is otw to hell in a hand basket. there's some word, wait... waist... whats it .... ways ... waste? waste! there it is. humans are fucking WASTEFUL
SmittyComic 31 points 7m ago
when people start complaining that it takes too long to get a drink, really hope starbucks starts giving us an extra person during peak times to get people what they want in a timely manner - instead of having us rely on our DPM to tell people when their drinks are being made.

just kidding, they'll just blame us and tell us we're not using the tools they give us correctly..
_w00sh 24 points 7m ago
Ours too. We had over 100 people in our cafe (were not a dt store) complaining abt missing drinks because most ppl got tired of waiting and just took whatever drink was on the counter. My store had over 100 drink remakes in less than 2 hrs and all those ppl who asked for a remake never took their remake which means yet another 100 drinks went to waste :/
selkieflying 5 points 7m ago
We had a MOP hand off for exactly this reason. We used a floor divider to stop customers from getting close to the usual handoff counter. The barista would pass and call orders and hand out the cups. It was still chaotic based on the sheer NUMBER of orders the barista was dealing with but at least we didn’t have to deal with stealing (we are by a high school so we get a LOT of theft even on an average day).
EyesOpenedWide31 19 points 7m ago
Wouldn’t it be incredible to have a fully staffed fully functional store? Can you imagine the connections and money we would make. I’m talking every position filled and just people restocking when you are out. Man what a fucking dream that would be
melkorarose 15 points 7m ago
Such a waste :/
gingergal-n-dog 13 points 7m ago
It's funny how the dpm shows drinks being made at 30+ minutes but tells me my mobile order will be ready in 3-8 minutes. They have the ability to make the app accurate, and choose not to do so. We had the same problem today as yesterday.
If ppl would just order in the Cafe or dt instead of mobile it would improve wait times. Especially the ones who place the order and then pull into line.
We had the same problems today. My dm had to wait 30 minutes for their drink. Like a regular customer.
jjd022980 7 points 7m ago
Yep sounds like our store! My sm had a handle bag of refunds!
dramaticcringelord 6 points 7m ago
Are you guys allowed to give out extras to customers for free? Whenever we have a mess up or remake as long as the customer hasn’t touched the cup yet we get to give it to the next person in line if they want it. I love it. People get so happy when given a free drink. 🥰
Audreyy117 [OP] 3 points 7m ago
It was too busy to even think about it - normally we do though
dramaticcringelord 2 points 7m ago
Ah yeah I get that
Aqua_lad27 6 points 7m ago
😢😢😢 breaks my heart
Hot-Temperature-4629 6 points 7m ago
Fuck me, so wasteful.
greenChainsaws 6 points 7m ago
yall keep them??
Audreyy117 [OP] 10 points 7m ago
We had a rotation going where we were keeping drinks that were an hour old behind the counter. If they came back or weren’t listening in cafe they were there. Then when the next hour hit we would dump them and clear any hour old drinks from our mobiles handoff. It was a constant cycle lol
Dependent_Magazine89 5 points 7m ago
We had about the same in wasted drinks, I felt so bad pouring them down the drain. We even tried to give them out to people but people just looked at us like we were crazy
buffany 4 points 7m ago
I was put on cafe/MOP bar and at a certain point I had to start calling out like “is (name) here for a mobile/cafe order?” before making drinks just to make sure we weren’t wasting product because we were 40 minutes behind 🥲
sdmh77 3 points 7m ago
Why would people waste the money🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
Ok_Visit_1968 2 points 7m ago
This is abuse poor coffee.
Senseitay_ 2 points 7m ago
And for some reason at our store it’s always the people who placed their order two minutes ago that are staring me down expecting their drink to be handed to them right then rather then the people whose drinks have been sitting there for twenty minutes.
daisy48189 2 points 7m ago
Wow…
Late_Pomelo_999 2 points 7m ago
What a waste
beaudebonair 1 points 7m ago
I take it you guys weren't giving away those Holiday cups? Lol, I happily obliged not to participate on that day just cause I knew it would be nerve-wrecking on my fellow former colleagues lol.
Audreyy117 [OP] 2 points 7m ago
We were, but we were so busy we were about 30 mins behind on mobiles and people just opted to leave
alexiisdarling_ 1 points 7m ago

Then why not give them out?!?
Audreyy117 [OP] 1 points 7m ago
Would you want a coffee that’s been sitting out for an hour? Even free that’s gross lol. These were abandoned mobiles so it wasn’t like drive where we know for sure immediately that the intended customer wouldn’t want it
kimchichii 0 points 7m ago
Why did u white out the names?
mingyafach -1 points 7m ago
Starbucks coffee is shit
LostinTheBeat0515 2 points 7m ago
Lol why you on this Reddit then…? 🧐
mingyafach 1 points 7m ago
That’s a good question
boothbygraffoe -38 points 7m ago
Any of those orders come through the App?
Those customers should be banned
aeb01 28 points 7m ago
…banned because they didn’t want to wait 30 minutes for their drink? your anger is misdirected
ladychelle 20 points 7m ago
It’s not like these customers spent $6-9 on a drink, purposefully, just to abandon it my friend. Wait times at my store were over 15-20 minutes, both in drive through and cafe, from open until close.

This is 100% labor, staffing, and upper management issues. Multiple customers abandoned their drinks because we’re in a busy medical area and had plenty of students/nurses/etc running late for work.
