I need help making a decision (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hello all, I currently work at a target starbucks and up until now I have absolutely loved it. Recently we got a new team lead who is very strict and starting to enforce a lot of rules that were never enforced before. I know this seems stupid but a lot of us are upset because we were never held to these standards before and we got kinda used to having a more relaxed environment. it just feels like a completely different job. we now can only wear black white or red (our previous team leads allowed us to wear starbucks dress code) and we can’t have any free food or drinks at any point which has pissed off a lot of us.

I don’t plan on staying with starbucks for too much longer, maybe another year, but I want to quit target asap. my question is, has anyone here gone from a licensed starbucks to a corporate starbucks and been happier? I like the idea of working at corporate because the dress code is way more relaxed, y’all get free food and drink markouts, everything seems more structured, there’s a lot more benefits than target, and all the managers actually know what’s going on (most of the time). the only downside I know of would be the business but im not super concerned about that

Dude, focus on leaving Starbucks as a company completely. It's a sinking ship. The labor market is leveraged by the worker. Employers are fond of former partners. Why make a lateral move when you can move vertically: increase your earnings, experiences and well-being elsewhere. If you need help with references, shoot me a message. You can also go here: r/bemyreference.

I understand. I was there as well. Starbucks has been the only company where I've been emotionally manipulated to such a degree. They require their employees to be invested emotionally, mentally, and physically. It's an abusive relationship where we are gaslit by corporate and the public. You can do it. Just dedicate 15 minutes a day to working towards better opportunities. Set a timer and do it. You'll be more emboldened each session. Before you know it, momentum happens and it can't be stopped. Good luck to you and keep your self worth. You can go anywhere and do anything.

i would say it really depends on the store! different stores have different environments but i love my corporate starbucks. maybe you could try at a corporate store where you live, and if you don’t like it you could maybe transfer since the transfer process is easier than it would be to transfer from your tarbucks. hope this helps!!

One of my coworkers came from a target and he likes it. It probably just depends on the store

In the new team lead's defense (I use to be a starbucks team lead), you were only supposed to wear those colors that target has written down in their policy (it was black only when I was there) and it will be an ecolab violation if they come in. Why? Cause that's how it's written. Is it totally stupid, yes. Will the ecolab tech be offended when you point out that clothing dye has nothing to do with sanitation, sure will. And the free food and drink is considered theft by target. The store manager and I fought for at least free beverages as I was hemorrhaging team members to Starbucks.
I left and went to corporate after HR didn't hire anyone and it was me and 2 high schoolers. I was working 60+ hrs for months, cause starbucks corporate said we couldn't reduce hours. As crazy as it can be at a corporate, I'm never alone in the store. Target's insurance was actually a lot better, but it might be hard to get if you're not a team lead.

I totally understand it’s the rule. it just kinda sucks when it hasn’t been enforced for 1-2 years and now all of a sudden I have to buy new clothes and ruin them straight away yk

As someone who went from a target Starbucks to a corporate store I can tell you it will be easier as long as you do not start digging into the drama and get involved in the cliques. I stayed blissfully unaware at my corporate store for nearly a year then I got transferred from mornings to nights because I told my SM I did not want to be scheduled for the 2am opening shifts anymore (that’s a different issue entirely) and I started to see the cliques and drama I was participating in during morning shift.

By far though, the best part about making the swap was the freedom that came with it. Like you said. Food and drink markouts, an actual discount that isnt cash or red card only, and tips. But the best is having a support system with you. You’ll have more than one person helping you at all times while open.

What I can recommend is make sure you set a firm boundary with your SM and ASM if you do make the jump about your availability, resources, etc.

Edit: spelling. Cold fingers = bad typing
