Is it just me or are our tips with the new card tip option gonna be lowkey massive?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by linseeded
It’s awkward af to have to ask for the tips BUTTT I have noticed people feel a social obligation to tip and a solid 3 outta 5 people prompted with the card reader will give a dollar. I have a feeling the first round of tip outs are gonna be pretty high. Thoughts?
420bumblebeetuna140 points7m ago
i feel sooooo uncomfy begging for tips and i wish the tip screen showed up WHILE the card was in the holder so custys can pull out the card and confirm the total while selecting a tip so we don’t have to ask for them , makes it so uncomfortable
linseeded [OP]82 points7m ago
They get weird abt the tips… like a few I encountered were lowkey annoyed LOL sorry man I just work here
420bumblebeetuna32 points7m ago
this could all be avoided if it weren’t for corporate greed.
monzoink14 points7m ago
?? I know that corporate isn’t paying enough to begin with, but corporate was in fact against this for a while
nicolelynnejones29 points7m ago
I think they mean corporate sets the prices for the drinks way beyond what they should be, people are more likely to be offended that they’re being asked to tip on a drink that’s already $9.
Dependent_Magazine894 points7m ago
People can be annoyed all they want, have these people ever been to a restaurant before? Tipping isn't at all a new thing, let's not make it something these people never heard of
absolutefoo36 points7m ago
i do the “it’s gonna ask you one question before it takes any money” and then they don’t hear that and then i have to be like “you have to answer the question first before it takes any money :-)))))”
Spinelise29 points7m ago
The amount of ppl who just start smacking the screen ignoring me and accidentally tip without wanting to 💀
absolutefoo6 points7m ago
i always giggle at them lmfaooo
Vincent_Cromwell2716 points7m ago
I mean the training just says to let them know there’s an added question or extra step with cards, not really begging.
420bumblebeetuna15 points7m ago
yeah we didn’t get any training.
clouds18310 points7m ago
its on the ipads, store resources, training, cc tipping training
BakerBetty203 points7m ago
The training isn’t that helpful tbh… it says that if a customer doesn’t select one that when they leave we select no tip anyway and that’s impossible because it won’t even allow the transaction to go through until they answer it anyway. But, it is on the store iPad if you are interested in taking it.
Impressive_Yoghurt894 points7m ago
The training was a lie.lol I'd prefer the training, how the customer walks off and I can hit "no thank you" for them instead of being like, "go ahead and select on option on the screen, and then you can tap"...an awkward few second silence waiting for them...like.."...mmhmm...okay, you're all set!"lol
Vincent_Cromwell273 points7m ago
🙃sad face. It’s accessible on the iPad in store resources! Just search card tips:)
lechatsombre2 points7m ago
I just tell them it’s going to ask for gratuity before they can pay and just choose whatever option you like. Kinda takes the you have to tip out and makes it less of a thing. Most of them still tip but seem less annoyed by it.
Dependent_Magazine891 points7m ago
Not at all for ne, I just look then dead in the eyes or jokingly say "hey so you wanna help me pay rent this month?" It'll be awkward if you make it awkward. A shift told me it's better to just say that the screen will ask ya a question or something like that
franglaisedbeignet86 points7m ago
I just say there is an extra screen that needs your attention if they tap or swipe and don’t notice it. I never mention what it’s for. They can read. Plus haven’t you noticed that this option has been available for YEARS at other restaurants and I personally haven’t had any issues hitting whatever option I choose to select. Once I had a customer that I realized didn’t speak English and he did look confused. I reached over and hit No Thank You button for him.
Renyx15 points7m ago
Inside, sure, but never once have I encountered this in a drive-thru. That's where it gets awkward/annoying.
franglaisedbeignet5 points7m ago
Good point.
dbldrm63 points7m ago
I am so fing excited for the cc tips to come to my store. I wont feel awkward ima be like ‘we finally have the cc tip option youve been waiting for!’ At the window lmao. Gimme da 💰 bitcxes
Responsible_Snow710914 points7m ago
LMAO u sound hilarious, like someone i would enjoy being around and working with lol because i just love weird awkward moments like that and it seems like it doesn't bother u either 😄
dbldrm5 points7m ago
Yes im sure we would have a blast together! Lol
ryzzostar61 points7m ago
I had so many customers asking me why there was no tip option on the card reader when so many people don't carry cash anymore. I'm glad it's there now.
clouds18332 points7m ago
my favorite encounter was
me: “so theres a new credit card tipping option, -“ cust: “yeah I know! I was one of the ones who has been asking for it! 5$”
Dependent_Magazine896 points7m ago
Yessss I had someone tell me how happy they were for it because no one carries cash anymore....they then proceeded to tip us $10
mjooyeon32 points7m ago
My manager did the math and so far the store has earned enough CC tips to add another $2+ per tippable hour!
PiscesQueen2432 points7m ago
Lol I hate the whole “it’s going to ask you a question ?🥹” spiel it’s so awkward but I am excited to how much more we get since people usually don’t tip because no one carries cash like that anymore
rettferdighetrader27 points7m ago
Our credit card tips are already $100 extra PER WEEK** at my store and it’s helped a lot with the holidays being around the corner. Yes it’s super awkward but damn it’s crazy how much of a difference it makes.
Edit: per week PER PARTNER
linseeded [OP]7 points7m ago
My jaw dropped
verdeuce2 points7m ago
Stepping down so I can get tips again
saltandseasmoke23 points7m ago
It's huge for us. Our tips are pitifully low compared to most cafes (and the way we split them evenly doesn't help) and this is really going to help. So far in the reports our manager / shifts have run, we're getting $3.30 / hr this week in digital tips - plus whatever we end up with in cash. so potentially $4+ / hr, when before card tipping we were making between $0.70 - $1.00 an hr. When our starting wage is already $15, that's REALLY appealing.
Broad-Flounder-497121 points7m ago
I have had several people accidentally tip $5 and get upset with ME like I pushed the button. I refunded the drink, but not the tip bc idk how 😎
sushibroni6 points7m ago
i don’t think they can be refunded (to my knowledge anyway), most you can do is give them a recovery card 😎 those tips are ours 😈😈
Broad-Flounder-49716 points7m ago
HAHAHDDH EXACTLY 😈😈 my shift burst into laughter when I told her. She cares very little for Howie’s paycheck
linseeded [OP]5 points7m ago
LMAO
yirium18 points7m ago
I went from working corporate to in a hotel where they asked this for credit cards. The tip difference is insane I made like +$5 an hour on average.
clouds18311 points7m ago
I always let them know to feel free to hit no thank you, as it takes the pressure off them, although most still hit 1$ or more so its not running off tips its just not pressuring those who weren’t prepared to tip financially and not making them feel bad.
geekgurl8110 points7m ago
I look away and at the screen like it’s part of the job. Awkward AF but I agree tips are gonna be NICE next week.
sushibroni3 points7m ago
LMAO ive been doing that too like i’m watching for the screen to say it was accepted 😭
mynoseisreallycold9 points7m ago
How do cc tips work? like why would we have to ask them if it just shows up anyway?
badatlife1516 points7m ago
Because ppl don’t actually look at the machine. I was in drive thru yesterday and ppl just hold their card out and try to tap without even looking.
Icky1382 points7m ago
i work inside register almost exclusively and I just let them work it out on their own. only a few people took too long realizing they needed to push something first and no one seemed upset so far.
badatlife152 points7m ago
I was definitely having people seem irritated and it irritates me because it slows down our drive thru times, but hopefully the tips will be nice.
PetMySquid6 points7m ago
Yesterday I counted 6 total cars at the window that didn’t tip at least a buck. I worked 4 hours at the window 2 of which were during peak. That’s a fat chunk of change
kingbirbiii5 points7m ago
someone asked for a refund when i showed them the reader with the tip screen
Responsible_Snow71093 points7m ago
Lmao what?? I wana know what happened lol so they just became that offended that they were asked to hit ANY option?
kingbirbiii6 points7m ago
i just said hi, here’s this, it’s gonna ask you a question about gratuity and they looked at me and said i want a refund i don’t wanna do this and we eventually just settled for no tip and the drink since it was already made. it was very awkward
Responsible_Snow71093 points7m ago
Lol that is quite strange. He didnt have to gear it that way. He could have just kept his mouth closed and hit on no tip
kingbirbiii5 points7m ago
yea i was very lost, like yes, we understand your opinion lol
Gigameki5 points7m ago
It's so awkwardddd. I'll hold it out for them in the drive thru and they'll just look at me, and we both look at each other awkwardly for what feels like forever, I even told a customer "I'm not judging, don't worry" because they looked like I was going to track them down if they didn't leave a tip
sushibroni4 points7m ago
we made more tips in 2 days than we normally do in a week, it’s insane. i hate that it’s going to get taxxed and it’s awkward as hell but god bless card tipping
polarizedspaghetti3 points7m ago
Will tips show up on our check as a separate category? Interested in tracking how much we get
mimitalu1 points7m ago
Yeah, tips legally have to be classified separately on your pay stubs for tax purposes (I used to be a tax preparer). Im wondering if starbucks will take taxes out for us or leave us to do it during tax season
cassxcx3 points7m ago
rightt, its the BIGGEST pain in the ass but the tips have skyrocketed 🫣 ppl probably won't tip on the prompt as much as people get used to it though unfortunately
linseeded [OP]1 points7m ago
Yeah that’s what I’m thinking,.. I’ll ride the tip wave while I can tho 😫
sholbyy3 points7m ago
The baristas at my local sbux are real sheepish about the tip prompt every time I pay with my card, but I’m happy for y’all. I haven’t been a partner for a few years now but I know when I was, if it wasn’t for tips there were times where I wouldn’t have been able to eat. Any customers that get shitty about this are just scrooges honestly. May your tip boxes (electronic and otherwise) overflow! ❤️
_kawaiikiller3 points7m ago
week to date we’ve done over $900 in tips :3
Euphoric_Ad12403 points7m ago
I’ve started just holding out the card reader
linseeded [OP]1 points7m ago
I hold it out then they try to take it 💀💀💀💀
sukkosaures3 points7m ago
I’m happy about the tip option I just wish there was another way to hold the card reader so I don’t have to be the one holding it. I’ve got very shaky hands when I try to hold things still so it’s just not optimal for myself to hold it while they answer the top question and pay
Creative-Clothes-5203 points7m ago
Our manager said we’re making about 150 more a day than we were
Torirock102 points7m ago
i got 16 dollars from credit card tips on my check yesterday
Ok-Party41772 points7m ago
we still haven’t got them installed in my store 😅👎🏽
sakuramads2 points7m ago
So my manager checked the tips.... we were at almost 1,000 this morning.... So like... i'm good with it 🤣
grungelover032 points7m ago
lol it’s so awkward but I just tell them “it’s just gonna ask you a question” and hold the card reader out for them and i even turn my head away so they don’t feel pressured 😭. That way it doesn’t seem like I’m awkwardly begging for tips and they don’t feel awkward not tipping if they choose to do so. We have been getting really nice tips tho so that’s nice now. Even small orders get like $1-3 tips now
Persnickety-sass10152 points7m ago
The cc tips are no different than many eateries and coffee shops around. Why do you feel bad asking for tips? You deserve it! You are not begging for tips; they can accept or decline. I have seen our tips in 3 days match what we take in with cash in a week! Our partners will now average $5-$6 more per hour. I’m happy for all of us!!!
StaaannnM_972 points7m ago
Sorry can someone explain this whole tip option like literally from the beginning? Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, we weren’t told/informed about any of this at my store, I’m just learning about it here😭… apologies in advance if this has already been explained
linseeded [OP]2 points7m ago
So normally ppl can only tip via the app or cash. Starbucks is fiiiiiiinally rolling out credit card tips. GREAT! But they gave them to (some of) us without any warning (like one day the reader just started showing tip options). And to do a credit card transaction now before putting a card in, the custie has to select a tip option. This is awkward and slows stuff down at drive thru because we have to hold the reader out and be like “it’s gonna ask a question” and customers are all like “? Wtf?” Type thing over it rn. It’s nice tho bc we have been getting a lot more tips - either because people would tip anyway or because we are right there watching them as they’re paying.. kinda puts pressure to tip.
StaaannnM_971 points7m ago
Ah okay, thank you for the info!!
Ok_Beautiful_40562 points7m ago
Yesterday was our first day of card reader tips and when we opened I took the first several DT orders and while I tried not to be nosey and stare the whole transaction I am very confident 8/10 customers tipped 👀
scarred_beauty2 points7m ago
It shows up on the pos after the transaction is finalized. Just watch the pos instead of watching the customer. It’ll say gratuity $.$$ if they’ve tipped. I think it also helps the customer not feel judged or pressured if they do or don’t tip if you’re looking away while they finish paying. Also, you’ll see when they’re done or you can catch if the transaction didn’t process without having to look at the card reader the whole time.
canidieyet_1 points7m ago
I’d be excited for it if we we’re getting it 😃
fun fact! If you’re a union store, you won’t get it✨
linseeded [OP]1 points7m ago
Of course Starbucks conveniently isn’t rolling that out for union stores ❤️
verdeuce2 points7m ago
Everything affecting wages has to go through the bargaining process

Whenever I’m in that position, I just tell people to answer that question however they feel. I make sure they know that they are in no way forced to tip us because I don’t like that feeling myself. I was doing that today. I just told people, “It’s gonna ask you a quick question on the screen. Please feel free to answer however you feel and know it’s no big deal.” A lot of people really seemed to appreciate that.
dirtychai02181 points7m ago
we just got cc tipping yesterday, are they like digital tips and get added to our paychecks automatically?
linseeded [OP]2 points7m ago
From what I understand they’ll be digital just like the app tips and just show up on our paychecks
dirtychai02182 points7m ago
sweet 😎

Lost-Ad52580 points6m ago
They are enticing you to tip ? This is complete bs! There is an evil intent behind this and it is to steal people's money unaware ! Sure they will say you have a choice to tip or not, bs! Every bastard barista stares at me with a threatening stare when ever the tiping prompt comes up, tripping should be a generosity not a force
weird0mags0 points7m ago
i actually haven't had to say anything to customers. we had it a whole day before someone told me we had gotten it earlier that morning lol. might look massive but don't worry, they'll tax the hell out of it 😂
neighborrcat-3 points7m ago
idk i hate the tipping system in general at starbucks. i hate our pay, don’t they me wrong here, but tipping is unnecessary is my hot take. idc how big the order is, tipping culture is getting out of control and we just need better wages.
IOnlyhave5_i_s-33 points7m ago
I must be the only person to not even consider parting with my hard earned money out of “guilt or social obligation”. Saying no with a smile isn’t difficult. I wish y’all earned enough money to live comfortably, it’s not on me to make that happen. Money is important and not easy to come by, I suffer for it like everyone else, so spending it comes with great consideration.
clouds18316 points7m ago
why are you in baristas only subreddit if you don’t work for sbux.
dbldrm-19 points7m ago
I totally feel this too! I only tip sometimes if its food service and not great at like restaurants. Im poor and tipping is not actually an obligation! But for those who r wealthier, there is no harm in being prompted to tip. We can all happily say no or agree. Ur right!
Blocked_ID2 points7m ago
If you can’t afford to tip just make your coffee at home actually
