Because people have had labor cuts (typically working 32-40 hours a week and have had as much as 75% reduction of hours), which is unfortunate as you need 20 hours weekly to meet the benefit criteria. They’re informed that they can easily make the criteria, but then are not provided the hours necessary. There are also individuals at some high volume stores that feel labor calculation is unfair. If you get 5 “free” modifications, there’s no labor added despite needing extra time to make the beverage. When every drink is like this it makes it frustrating to work in a fast way. Covid made things harder, people were nastier, people are getting nastier as we transition to the endemic phase. Unions have the “ability” to protect workers and their rights (whether that is labor, benefits, pay, ect). It depends on what your store “wants” with a union. Do you want 14 hours weekly at a higher rate, well that could be negotiated in collective bargaining, but that’s a process. There can also be some toxic managers that aren’t as supportive as others, whom might not work the floor because of their non coverage hours or ect. Starbucks is a stressful place, but it depends on what type of store you have and the abilities of your team.
