It’s that time of year for money scams again! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Animegirl300
Just a reminder to other baristas to teach your green beans how to avoid money scams! This week we had one green bean accept $60 in fake money. One of them was a bit more convincing since the only thing ‘off’ about it was the feel of the paper and fact it doesn’t have the correct markings, but the other two were those motion picture fake bills, which means she really just wasn’t paying attention. Either way, new young people who apparently haven’t handled cash a lot; they’re the perfect prey for it.

We also had a guy come in and try the old ‘You didn’t give me my correct change’ switcheroo, but luckily he had tried it on an older barista so it didn’t work, but I just know that those kinda of scams are going to be getting more frequent as we go into the holiday season and I’m kinda worried about the newer folks who don’t know how to handle it. It’s honestly something that their trainers or even manager should have gone over with them *before* the holiday launch in my opinion, but just in case other people aren’t seeing that training happening I just thought I’d put a reminder.

I would also suggest making sure you’re stressing to green beans about safer precautions like immediately locking the window and doors at closing, keeping it closed between cars, taking in the tip jars after dark, and making sure everyone is staying to watch out for the shift locking the doors at the end of the night, things like that. I know my area at least is seeing a lot more crime in general which is just going to get worse as the season hits, so please Stay safe out there!!

Something I teach all of my trainees is to announce how much the customer hands you, and place the bill on the counter in the customer’s view while you’re gathering their change.

I’ve dealt with way too many “I handed you a $20/$50/$100” scammers in my life. If you leave their bills on the counter while you gather and give their change, they can’t pull that shit.

This is the way

this way! I grab their cash and for example go “okay, so 14.50 out of $20… that’ll be 5.50 back in change”

We don’t take anything bigger than $20 unless at a huge total. Plus we have counterfeit markers by the register and we mark the bills before cashing out.

They were fake $20s, and unfortunately the markers aren’t very reliable when managers are pressing speed. (I personally just use the shadow strip test for them all, but I’ve been working in service for forever, the new folks don’t know or are too anxious to do it every time if they think they’ll get in trouble.)

I’ll usually rub my nail across the dead president to feel for the ridges and hope I’m being subtle enough the customer doesn’t notice, but I don’t think it’s the most reliable test out there
