can my manager do this? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by strawblemonade
today my shift was scheduled to end at 11:15am. my shift lead told me that our manager changed all our shifts so that we would finish earlier that what we were previously scheduled. i ended up finishing at 10:30am and since my shift finished earlier, i didn’t get a lunch. is she allowed to change our schedule, while we are working that shift?

Yeah. Your store probably went over in labor this week bc of red cup day so the manager and the shifts can send you home early to fit business needs.

In California, if they ever give you less than 1/2 of your scheduled hours you are entitled to Reporting Time Pay: https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/faq_reportingtimepay.htm

But it sucks. I’m sorry. Just because a manager can cut scheduled hours at will (they can, within reasonable limits to meet the business needs) doesn’t mean they morally should without your willing agreement. This is mostly the Siren’s fault. Starbucks directs all managers to comply with really lean staffing according to the business’ earned hours, and your DM will get on your manager if their labor doesn’t map onto earned hours with minimal variance.

Lunches are unpaid anyway, at least in my area, so you didn’t lose more than 15 minutes of pay… and by all means, get your partner food on your way out the door!

not 100% sure this is backed by actual policy, but I was always told that the manager/SSV has to ask you if you’re willing to end your shift early (for labor budget reasons; obviously this doesn’t apply if there’s a health/safety/disciplinary issue) because if you weren’t notified of a schedule change ahead of time, you’re entitled to the hours/pay
