Unsupported after illness (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by starryesque
So I just came back to work today after almost a full week of having the flu, I started feeling sick on Monday but worked Monday and Tuesday because my store leads always ask you to find coverage if you’re sick and make it a big deal, but also because I thought I felt better than I was. Tuesday I wanted to call out but I woke up too late so I came in failed my covid coach, told the supervisor on duty that I felt like I had a fever and could we use the thermometer that we had from covid. It read as 95/96 for both of us and I was like are you sure that’s too low and they were like it’s fine. This leads to me passing out and hitting my head a few hours later and finally being sent home. Of couse after a talk with my manager about how important it is to find coverage when I’m sick because we’re losing a partner on the floor if I get sent home or call off, nothing about the food safety violation that is, nothing about me not being able to get better if I’m still working while sick, nothing about protecting my partners and customers, just ‘we’ll be down a partner.’ So I call off Thursday and finally feel okay to come in today, but I just had the flu it’s impossible for me to be at 110% so I’m slow I need frequent water breaks and I’m just made to feel so bad for that. I’m explaining I just got over the flu my body can’t really regulate temperature well yet and I will pass out again (I was close today) so I just need a few extra moments for water and a seat and to be able to be slow and I’m just told that it’s not fair for me to do that and I should either find coverage for my shifts or maybe get a LOA if I can’t do my job… Which just feels kind of rude, I feel better I’m showing up I don’t need a leave of absence just because I can’t overextend myself like crazy on a Sunday with a 5 partner play. It just felt like my concerns were dismissed and they want me to grow through the proper channels which is silly to me, I’m leaving for thanksgiving Wednesday, I work Monday and Tuesday. I’ll be better when I return, I don’t know what to do. Should I just do what they apparently want me to do and call out? Or just come to work and do my best and if they’re upset they can be down a partner?

callout anyways, you're sick. it shouldn't be the responsibility of the *sick* person to find coverage, it should be the management's

unfortunately, i do not recall what the official policy is wrt finding coverage. i *think* it's supposed to be the ssv/manager's but then again they don't pay us enough to worry about that, $15 or not.
