I'm really tired of partners automatically clicking no on the CUP fund round up option when I purchase something at starbucks. I get that not everyone wants to donate, but I've seen the CUP fund helping people, and I think it's important to help in little bits where I can even when I'm struggling financially.
If other people choose not to donate, I'd never judge them, regardless of their financial status, but almost 75% of the times I buy something at either my own store or another, they just select no and don't ask- I have to tell them before I give payment, and even then they don't do it half the time.
Even if you'd personally say no, just ask people, I've even heard trainers tell new partners to "just click no" and I think it's a sucky thing to do.

Why is a multibillion dollar corporation asking their wage slaves for their spare change is what I want to know. The cup fund helps people for sure, but Starbucks is more than capable of fully funding the cup fund.
Beneficial-Weird-817 [OP]26 points7m ago
I agree, but in the meantime I should still be given the option to round up?
sheep_heavenly9 points7m ago
Elect for it to come from your paycheck if you want to donate consistently.
Jew_323 points7m ago
Honestly this is the same reason I don’t donate to big corporation’s drives anymore. I give them my money and they get the tax write off. F that. I’ll give money to community organizations that support the community I live in, but I’m giving it from me to them. This give corporate America a donation to send their workers to college or what not, isn’t something I’m willing to support anymore.

Excellent response

Because they pour a very generous amount of money into both partner benefits and charity every year? I mean hell why doesn’t Starbucks just comp my entire life, they definitely have the money for it.
Bhaisaab8660 points7m ago
I’ve been with the company since 2008 and can’t name a single person who’s applied for and been approved for the cup fund grant. Including myself on three separate occasions. In every case, the situation fell completely within the guidelines and not once was anyone approved.
I’m very interested to know exactly how much is in the actual cup fund.
trousersquid14 points7m ago
I know one of my SSV have used it successfully when they were facing eviction, but I've never tried myself.
diphenhydranautical9 points7m ago
a dear friend of mine had to use it once. i don’t know the exact details of why but she said it wasn’t really helpful. if she’d stop and get herself a sandwich or something small to eat while she was out (she was often working 50+ hour weeks so the convenience really helped) they’d tell her how unnecessary that was and it would be more financially wise to not do that. it just made her feel bad for spending money on things she really did need and knowing how hard she was working it really broke my heart. everyone has suggested i try using the cup fund when i was having financial issues and she was the only person i know who had to use it and she told me it was not worth it
MasterMischievous-3 points7m ago
Wdym not worth it, it’s free money.
diphenhydranautical1 points7m ago
i just explained what i meant in that paragraph. it wasn’t my experience so i don’t have any more details than that
MasterMischievous0 points7m ago
I guess I’m just confused how free money when you’re financially struggling isn’t worth it. Sorry your friends feelings got hurt and yeah 50 hours is a lot…. Kinda. You do the math and with only 50hrs a week you still have more free time than you are working or sleeping. And idk what the situation was or why she needed the money, but I guess if I was homeless and starving I’d be kind of upset to hear “sorry there isn’t any money left in the cup fund” and I hear someone is going through McDonald’s getting a 12$ meal because it’s convenient. The moneys for emergencies, and if she needed it that desperately I think it’s both unwise and unnecessary to spend it on fast food, when you can buy groceries to make the money go 10x further.
Beneficial-Weird-817 [OP]5 points7m ago
I'm sorry that happened, I've met two people and I've been with the company for only a year and a couple months, so I'm not sure where that comes from. I have heard recently from other partners and managers that it's basically been emptied, so while I wish starbucks would step in and do more, I also wish they were more transparent about where the money goes, obviously while considering the privacy of the partners who do get approved.
MasterMischievous2 points7m ago
The answer is next to zero, over a hundred of our partners were completely homeless after hurricanes in Florida I thinks. The money for drained getting everyone rehomed and repairing damages.
kittykattt327 points7m ago
I don’t know man…I’ve got mixed feelings on this one. I applied for the CUP fund during COVID and they denied me for the stupidest reason. Why would I donate to them when they won’t even approve someone in need. I understand asking if partners want to donate but Starbucks has such shit wages, rounding up can be a lot for some people
Beneficial-Weird-817 [OP]1 points7m ago
I'm sorry that happened, I wonder who's in charge of deciding that sort of stuff. I have heard recently from other partners and managers that it's basically been emptied, so while I wish starbucks would step in and do more, I also wish they were more transparent about where the money goes, obviously while considering the privacy of the partners who do get approved.
Obviously I would never criticize anyone who doesn't want to donate for any reason, but especially because they need the money and could benifit from it themselves. It's like how I don't tip at my own store- why tip money I can use to a pool that will ultimately just give me back a small percentage of that money? It only bothers me when partners assume that because they don't round up, others don't want to.
the1noir17 points7m ago
Then just manually make donations or enable donations through your paychecks through partner info.

I agree that it sucks not to be given the option, but from the other side people are so unpleasant and abusive to restaurant and retail staff these days that they are probably afraid of this being one more thing to be screamed at over. I work in a restaurant, and the register defaults to prompting someone to select whether to tip, even on carry out. Due to the number of times I have heard disgruntled mutterings and downright been verbally berated for this, I always tell carry outs "just skip that first screen" when they look like they might Karen out on me.
Beneficial-Weird-817 [OP]8 points7m ago
I get that, but this screen only appears for other starbucks employees. Obviously not every starbucks employee is perfect, but I think it's safe to assume that if anyone will be understanding and nice to a barista, it'll be another barista.
I don't really get how a tipping screen at a restaurant is comparable to a 'round up to donate to this fund for other partners', to be honest.
bitchesbetwattin3 points7m ago
I definitely misunderstood the OP, and did not realize it was only visible to other partners. My comment has zero relevance! Apologies to all. .......if I can figure out how to remove it, I will!
Beneficial-Weird-817 [OP]1 points7m ago
No worries!
Comfortable-Plane9442 points7m ago
It’s not comparable. Like you said, it’s just an option for our partners. And we should be willing to help each other if we’re able. I’ll round up when I can, but I’ve also had times when things were tight and couldn’t that day.
Beneficial-Weird-817 [OP]1 points7m ago
I totally get that, and I'd never give anyone a hard time for not rounding up no matter the reason
no0dles1302 points7m ago
I’ve had plenty of my fellow partners gain support from CUP fund but it is used as a last resort so you have to show proof that you have exhausted every other form of options and that includes your retirement fund before CUP fund can support you. I know a barista that the CUP fund paid for a funeral cause the barista didn’t have any money to have a proper burial when their mom passed. Another partner needed help with rent and electricity bills. I know another where the CUP fund paid a barista the down payment and first month rent on a new apartment because they were homeless.
Kaluskydrak1 points7m ago
If you want to be petty just ask them to round up AFTER you know they selected no, and when they can’t you can politely ask them to restart the transaction because I guarantee they don’t know where the CUP fund donation button is
