Any way to get out of a shift I agreed to cover? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dontcry2022
I was basically put on the spot this morning during my shift, didn't have much time to think about my answer and I didn't ask for more time because, well, pressure. I didn't have a "reason" to say no but now that I think about my whole day and things I need to get done, I'm like. Wow I really screwed myself over.

I have reached out to other partners from my store not scheduled and I haven't had luck. Idk how to get in contact with other partners.

Would I get in trouble if I attempted to back out? I don't know how to explain myself but I've regretted saying yes for the past while. I am supposed to travel tomorrow and I also work tomorrow and there's a lot on my plate already that a double today is too much

Should I just call the store and see if they could try to get a borrowed partner instead?

You agreed to take the shift, it’s on you to find coverage.

Yeah I know ugh 🥲 called store, manager gave me some ideas of who to call, fingers crossed

This is why I always say “text me and I will get back to you. I’d love to help you out but I have to check my plans and schedule”

Ugh yeah def having regrets lol

I am going to clarify my boundaries lol, like if I'm going to be asked in person I'd like to have some time to think about it. My SM quite literally had me sit down with them for a sec to ask me and yeah that was way too direct for me to feel like I had the time or space to give it fair consideration.

It's dumb but if you take a shift from someone else and you can't make it, the person you're covering for is actually still responsible for finding coverage for it. So you technically don't have to find coverage for it and either the other person or management needs to find coverage.

that isn’t true at all. the shift is now OPs, and is now OPs responsibility. I *guess* if it wasn’t changed on the partner hours app it could be a gray area but OP mentioned saying yes in front of the manager so I am 99.9% sure this is now unfortunately OPs problem :(

That would make sense though. Starbucks doesnt do things that make sense. I was an ASM and had to get on people's cases when their coverage couldn't come in. It was the dumbest thing.

i mean honestly it’s not the other persons fault and from my understanding the reason we have shift swap is to hold the other person accountable. for ex, i was supposed to work tomorrow but someone else wanted the shift and I gave the shift to them on partner hours. That shift is no longer assigned to me, which means if the other person doesn’t come it’s no longer my problem.

Logically that makes sense yes but according to Starbucks policy if that person does not come in it is still your responsibility to come in or find new coverage. It's been a minute since I was ASM so it might have changed so I could be dead wrong about this. But I know I read somewhere that the shift is your responsibility no matter what happens.
