Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Do you have a “flow” or “routine” for the new drive thru tipping option? I feel so uncomfortable. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by daisypickens
Do you put the card in or let them do it? Any one liners? I’m in the south so people aren’t taking to the change too kindly and I’m trying to make it as smooth as possible
interyx 147 points 7m ago
I'd just give them the whole machine and say "there's a new question for you to answer on here" and leave it at that.
trousersquid 73 points 7m ago
I've had to add "Once it says APPROVED, you can pull your card back." Because without fail, they pull the card without even listening.
TheGreekGazelle 21 points 7m ago
u dont have to wait for approved btw, just for the top to say pls remove card, i usually look at it and tell them when to remove it cuz it getting cold asf outside
trousersquid 12 points 7m ago
I tell them to wait because otherwise they don't actually pay attention long enough and I'm tired of holding up the line to do it twice 🙃
TheGreekGazelle 5 points 7m ago
lmaooo fair enough then, if it works for u then keep rollin w it, also if u got stupid customers thats the way to go 😂😂
clouds183 143 points 7m ago
my script is “so we have a new credit card tipping option, feel free to hit no thank you”. I’ll take their card if they hand it to me before I can verify that its a credit card and not a sbux card, and I’ll hand them the card reader for them to choose an option and if I have their card I’ll insert it/swipe/tap and then hand it back to them.

edit: if I get bad vibes from them I’ll hit no thank you myself and not ask them but most of the time I let them choose.
interyx 35 points 7m ago
Especially if they hand you cash with the card, there's no reason to double up on the tip prompt. I'll just clear it out and run the card myself.
daisypickens [OP] 16 points 7m ago
Thank you!!
Lejeune68 20 points 7m ago
Don’t follow that advice. I assure you. You are one Karen complaint away from losing a job, if the customer does not select the tip insert the card themselves and finalize the payment on the pinpad, there cannot be a tip.

Customer is pissed about drink being wrong/too much/it’s snowing December idk. And it comes out that you selected the tip or inserted the card etc during the payment process, you’ll be termed. They aren’t showing leniency on this. A partner at a store a few blocks from us was fired last week, they were trying to process the transaction at the drive thru pin pad crashed, they used front register to pay added the SAME tip the customer did and got fired. They got found out, because the customer called back later and complained the excess wait in the drive thru. Manager did the research, fired the partner.

They are equating it to theft. They only way to not have a disputed tip amount is to not be involved. Practice handing them thing, practice holding the PED. Anything where you are not inserting the card or choosing a damn thing.
absolutefoo 2 points 7m ago
Oh fuck I would lose my mind if I got fired for that.
saltynerdy 15 points 7m ago
I’m pretty sure you can get in trouble for selection an option for them, regardless of what it is. Just be careful
clouds183 16 points 7m ago
in the training it says you are only allowed to select “no thank you”, nothing else. thats all I’ve done.
Lejeune68 17 points 7m ago
Nah, you’re playing with some wicked fire here. So, we were a test store for this, we instructed by our DM that if YOU insert the card it’s no tip. For the tipping options the CUSTOMER must do the entire thing, select option insert card. Anything else is a risk.

Just hand them the entire PED. Honestly. I do this, I open the window, quick scan to see how they are paying. If CC, I take PED hand to customer and say something like “this is yours for 30 seconds. I’ll trade you a drink for it.” I stage inside the window and then collect PED. Then all drinks start coming out.
clouds183 8 points 7m ago
they just don’t take the ped though so I have to sit there holding it for them because they wont take it
jams1015 7 points 7m ago
>If CC, I take PED hand to customer and say something like “this is yours for 30 seconds. I’ll trade you a drink for it.”

This is a fantastic way to say this! I'm stealing this, but I'm thanking you as I do so because I'm a polite thief.
AppointmentLatter302 4 points 7m ago
See our manger said if we hit no thank for them we can get fire they have to do it
Lejeune68 2 points 7m ago
You can hit No thank you.
AppointmentLatter302 2 points 7m ago
My manger doesn’t even want us doing that
Lejeune68 3 points 7m ago
That’s honestly smart and safe. The only times we select anything is for disabled customers, which we have a few that drive, but don’t have fingers or have the shakes to an impossible extent, or the drive thru PED has decided to crash and front register needs to be used.
dallizzlee 1 points 7m ago
The training from Starbucks themselves said you can hit no thank you if they don’t do anything sooo
ninny13 115 points 7m ago
i usually just hand it out to them and say “my card readers gonna ask you a quick question” and then avoid eye contact cause it sometimes feels awkward :,)
GoldennTrash 34 points 7m ago
BRO. it’s sooo awkward. cause i don’t wanna stare and ppl while they do it and make them feel intimidated into leaving a tip, so i also just look away lmfao
Regular-Reveal8133 9 points 7m ago
i like to say “it’s gonna ask u about a tip but i’m not gonna look” and then either look intensely at or dramatically away from the card reader
Brooklynbubbles 4 points 7m ago
Same hahaha
PrestigiousLong3023 75 points 7m ago
My job that I worked at before Starbucks had a similar card machine, where it asked for a tip before the card could process. One thing that worked really well to get them to answer the prompt in a timely manner was saying “it’s just gonna ask you one question on the screen, you can either select an amount to leave as a tip or press no thank you to move forward!” It’s a little wordy but it tells them exactly what to do. Many people don’t want to tip so far (at my store) because, I mean, if they’re already paying $8 for a coffee then I get not wanting to tip. It’s not in everyone’s budget. Some people seem overwhelmed with the new option too so I’ve found that telling them exactly how to use the machine keeps us moving fast. At least until everyone gets used to it, lol.
daisypickens [OP] 27 points 7m ago
Thank you!! Yeah, I have a second job as an iPad cashier, I don’t understand why people have to make some kind of face or reaction, just press no and move on!! Hopefully it will chill out once everyone is used to it. I appreciate it!!
TarantulaTeeth13 17 points 7m ago
Similar scenario here, I've been happy to see how many people are like " WOW FINALLY!" a drop a 5 on there. And I'm way jazzed they did this before the holidays.
848341 26 points 7m ago
my store we don’t say “feel free to decline.” someone came up with the term “tip or skip” and we’ve been using it ever since. it’s pretty quick and effective.
ihavemanyanimals 22 points 7m ago
"This is just going to ask you a quick question about tipping. Feel free to decline"
MarieCrepes 16 points 7m ago
What I started doing today which I think went a lot better than before was "Starbucks just rolled out card tips last week, so just follow the prompt on the screen."
MarieCrepes 14 points 7m ago
I feel like acknowledging it's a tip option instead of just being vague or playing dumb has gotten a much better response.
Lcolecrochet 5 points 7m ago
With anything new I’ve found just being open and honest with the customers not only garners a more positive response, but teaches them about the new things quicker. Then the less time educating we have to spend over the same thing.
musicmaniac228 11 points 7m ago
I just say "hey Starbucks made some updates to our card readers, just follow the prompts as needed" :)
Avoni_C 9 points 7m ago
I mean I've just been saying "it's just going to ask you a quick question" but then my shift said to straight up say "it's just going to ask you if you want to tip us" and I added "but don't feel pressured" because ONG it's SO awkward to ask knowing most don't like it (and it's also awkward cause you can see who tips on the screen lmao)
Blocked_ID 10 points 7m ago
Your shift is going against standard, we’re not even supposed to say the word tip
strbrrylmnade 8 points 7m ago
my personal fave is “so it’s going to ask you a really quick question that’s a little awkward if i ask and a little sketch if i answer”. usually gets me like $2-$5 tips
becksaroni 5 points 7m ago
I've just been saying "it's gonna ask you a question so I'm gonna let you hold that" and then act like I'm doing something on the computer or going to grab their straw/napkins.
twistedstarfall 5 points 7m ago
I started with explaining how we were instructed to in the training at first but have since slipped more into "How are you paying today? Card? Okay, just go ahead and follow the prompts on the screen then you can pay"

It's minimized a lot of the time it took explaining for people who are now familiar after launch week while still giving a cue to newcomers.
TemperatureHuman7963 5 points 7m ago
I just say it’s going to ask you a question first— I don’t say feel free to decline lol. That feels like you’re making it more awkward by acknowledging that they might not want to tip idk
[deleted] 5 points 7m ago
[deleted]
Best_Strain3133 5 points 7m ago
I say reader has a question only you have the answer, then shove the reader at them :)
Allieriffic 5 points 7m ago
Before they even get the card in, I tell them "you'll need to make a selection on the screen and once it says approved you're good to go" - other than some people who seemed annoyed the first time, it's been taken pretty well and many people say they're glad they don't have to keep cash anymore
Remarkable_Hold_2342 5 points 7m ago
I usually say “it’s gonna ask if you would like to tip today or not first” as I give them the reader to tap which option
ThatBichAlex 4 points 7m ago
I just tell people to answer the question on the screen and to “tap, insert, or swipe, whatever your card does”. Don’t feel bad for asking for tips, you don’t have to encourage them not to tip you. Definitely just stay passive
Gimmecoffee2020 4 points 7m ago
Once I see they are using a credit card, I hand them the reader sideways so they don’t try just sticking their card in, and say, “here’s the reader just go ahead and follow the prompts.”
HappyBarista 5 points 7m ago
Yep! Exactly what I do. “Follow the prompts”

I did have ONE person who looked at the screen and said “tip??!!! HA!! The coffee is expensive enough!” I could have just said nothing but…the snarky sass came out before I could stop it. I said “the money you pay for the coffee goes to corporate. They were just trying to give US the chance to make a little something!”
Unfortunately my sass was lost on that customer🙄🙄🙄
MatchingColors 4 points 7m ago
“Hey there’s a new tip thing, you don’t have to but I’m not allowed to select it for you” in the nicest and chillest way I can.

Works fine so far, I like being relaxed when I say it and seemingly indifferent to what they decide.
aye_vee_aye 3 points 7m ago
I feel like letting them know we can’t press anything makes them feel less pressured Bc it shifts it from us asking for a tip, to us unable to move the transaction forward. They seem to understand we don’t have a choice in this.
Intelligent_Wash9000 3 points 7m ago
Ok what about y’all who do the card swiping and tapping urself in drive thru (bc it’s quicker and easier) how are we going about this 😭
sarahtilton_ 3 points 7m ago
I always just have the reader out and say "choose an option on this screen, and then just tap your card right on top" because i hate doing the whole "tip🥺" thing & trying to hold the card Reader still enough for the chip
BigDillLadyPickle 3 points 7m ago
We were told at my store “DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS” it's strictly for the customer. I just say “so Starbucks has a new tipping system. It's going to ask you if you want to tip or not and then you will be able to insert your payment.” if they are a little upset I just say “feel free to press no tip and no pressure”
aye_vee_aye 3 points 7m ago
I have been taking their card like usual then saying “I’m going to actually hand you this, there is a new prompt you have to click through”
If they look confused I’ll say “they are trying out a new system, there is no pressure we just can’t press any buttons for you”
Then they will usually hold it until they take out their card.

I won’t press anything for them Bc we already had an issue of someone accidentally tapped $5 tip with their finger when doing Apple Pay & accused us of stealing from them.
Purple_Coffee653 3 points 7m ago
What I do is start by saying, "Hey guys were got to do some teamwork here." as I hold out the card reader. Followed up by, "It's going to ask you a question, feel free to hit no thank you." Ended with my best thank you so much smile before looking away.
Blocked_ID 3 points 7m ago
“It’s going to ask you a quick question,” and then if they’re confused “you have to select an option before you can pay”
xxsophiamiller 2 points 7m ago
I’ve been saying “Theres going to be a prompt there, if you could fill out that out for me that would be great!” For some reason, phrasing it like that has made more customers actually TAKE the card reader rather than me sitting there holding it awkwardly I also let them know that “it’ll say approved or remove card when it’s ready to go!”
packofgames 2 points 7m ago
“Here you go it’s gonna ask you if you’d like to add a tip, if not you can just hit no thank you.” i never want them to feel obligated and it’s just as awkward for me as it is them lol. also from the south and had no complaints yet
crunchycookie28 2 points 7m ago
I just hand everything as normal and say “it’s going to ask you if you’d like to leave a tip and if not that’s totally fine you can press no thank you at the bottom right corner” it’s long but it helps make the time pass by as they figure it out and I don’t look lol
[deleted] 2 points 7m ago
[deleted]
AshMoony 2 points 7m ago
I just prompt them with “it’s going to ask you a question then you can put the card in”
RandomNYCx 2 points 7m ago
I keep it simple and say “go ahead and hit a button”
Chemical_Currency_15 2 points 7m ago
I just say "it's going to ask for a tipping option before it'll process that card for ya." It's gone over pretty well for our customers. I cant wait to see the tips on my next paycheck.
shellybean8760 2 points 7m ago
I like to hand it to them and if they take it great if they don’t also okayish and just hey can you select an option for me and if I accidentally habitually took they’re card I’ll insert or tap it for them and then like pass it back or hand the ped to show they can take their card out and as if they want a receipt.
National-Vehicle1063 2 points 7m ago
When I’m on DTR the customer will usually hand me their card if they’re paying with it, and I’ll grab it put their card in for them, and then hand them the card reader and say “ the card reader is going to ask if you would like to leave a tip, and the. It’ll process your payment afterwards.” And while it’s processing I ask if they would like a receipt, and then follow up with asking how they’re doing or some other type of customer connection.
anonymous6248 2 points 7m ago
my store has the new machines but it doesn’t have the tip option ?
Regular-Reveal8133 1 points 7m ago
i think it’s a software update for the card reader bc idk if my stores machines are the new ones but we got our card reader may 2020
josiechamp 2 points 7m ago
I've been saying "it's going to give you a prompt on the screen there and it'll tell you when to remove your card. Were you going to want a receipt today?" I feel like it makes it less awkward if I keep talking! I know other people have been saying "it'll ask you a quick question" and I've heard a few people say "it's going to ask about a tip. Feel free to put whatever you'd like" these are just a few ways I've heard at my store. I know it can be awkward but like I said I just keep talking to it doesn't feel awkward to me lol
TheGreekGazelle 2 points 7m ago
heres my flow!

i see that they have a card and im like

so ur gonna see an option here to click and go ahead and do that for me then insert or tap your card!

if they get confused or i mess up im like

loool sorry this is a new update! were still getting used to it too sorry XD

i also face the screen towards me once they insert the card and tell them when to remove it cuz u dont have to wait for the approved! message and my hands get to cold holding it out
TheGreekGazelle 4 points 7m ago
also PSA u can get in a lot of trouble for taking their card or clicking no for them. that should be last case scenario but if u accidentally slip up or some stickler sees u doing it u can get flagged
Regular-Reveal8133 3 points 7m ago
u should redo the training… ur very much allowed to hit no for customers (if u don’t believe me just ponder on how u would help a drive customer if they only have card and the drive thru register is down so ur bringing payment to cafe register) idk the standard on taking cards but i started may 2020 and my trainer made it very clear that before covid the standard was taking the cards instead of holding the reader out so i think there just hasn’t been clear expectations on how to ring people out with the reader in drive since they changed it for covid
TheGreekGazelle 1 points 7m ago
also i did say “last case scenario” in which i shouldve clarified was implying when ur machine is down or computer is down and u have to take their card. thats my b.
also it isnt the kindest thing to say that someone should redo the training if ur not going to provide evidence of someones mistake. because of my role in this company i take notes on all of the training modules in order to have it written and know where to find it when someone asks about it :’)
sbux is already a trip, we have it rough, no need to be rough on ur fellow baristas/shifts
TheGreekGazelle 1 points 7m ago
they go over the situation u said to ponder on in the training, but i appreciate you double checking with me
TheGreekGazelle 1 points 7m ago
the training says were not allowed to unless we need to take their card into the cafe register. in the shift training it also says to make sure to coach baristas who do click the buttons for people in drive thru. im in tmrw morning ill send a linked picture of it for u and those in this reddit
Sarenord 1 points 7m ago
I take their card, put it in the reader, press the credit card button on the till, and then hold the reader out for them and say "it's going to ask about a tip" and then I hold it out there until the transaction is done and they take their card
changbinsomnia 1 points 7m ago
i hate it. i know thats not what u asked but it makes me dread window more than i already did. not to mention it drags down window times
dallizzlee 1 points 7m ago
My store doesn’t have the option to tip yet? Is this rolling out at different times?
Dependent_Magazine89 1 points 7m ago
I honestly have so shame in straight up putting the card reader in their face and saying "it's gonna ask you to Tip first" and that actually gets more tips honestly.
fuckgil 1 points 7m ago
I look them in their soul with my kindest smile and ask if they’d like to tip and hold the card reader out. We need those tips fr
poopylilbutt 1 points 7m ago
My advice is to get smooth with it - just simply say “there’s a question for you before you insert or tap” and don’t be too weird about it. If you are uncomfortable they will be too.
I for one don’t want to lose out on credit card tips simply because other baristas are making it “awkward.”
Every other coffee shop has credit card tipping, Starbucks is VERY late to the game, and so far at my store we’ve seen a huge increase in tips since implementation.

“Good morning your total is $…, please follow the prompt on the reader before inserting tapping or swiping your card on the next screen!”
derbylane1 1 points 7m ago
“Would you like to leave a digital tip today?”
keskobalt 1 points 7m ago
I just hold it out like I used to for them to put their card in or tap but now I say “it’s gonna ask you for a tip” I also don’t mind watching them
saratcr 1 points 7m ago
i greet them, hand them the pd and say “before you insert your card it’s going to ask a quick question” and avoid eye contact :) also some customers have noticed it’s new so i try to make conversation over that if i need to like “yeah it’s something new we recently added…” etc. i do find if you’re soloing tho it makes things less smooth as far as alternating between dto and dtr tho but i guess that’ll come with time
Ok-Mix-5129 1 points 7m ago
I just say there’s a prompt on the screen for ya
MasterMischievous 1 points 7m ago
At least where im from literally everywhere has an option that is asked to tip. I sorta get it if Starbucks has been youre only coffee shop you’ve ever been to, but I know that that doesn’t describe most of our clientele. Why tf are customers acting like it’s something we shouldn’t have had all along. It drives me nuts that they think it’s ridiculous that we’re asking for a tip. Sorry rant over.

I usually hand them the whole machine, and get their straws drink holders or stoppers ready (or pretend to if I already have everything). And then redirect my attention to them after 15 seconds or so. It’s worked out for the most part. Not really an option tho if they park their car on the other side of the planet and my cord (and my arms) don’t reach that far.
Fearthebite 1 points 7m ago
I usually hold it out the window for them with my arm closest to them- with the arm close to the counter, I grab items and hand them out at the same time. Usually gets them in and out quickly! We’re still seeing 40sec OTW times in peak
Beneficial-Weird-817 1 points 7m ago
I always just say:

"Good morning! Your total is ___, are we doing cash, card, or app? Card, awesome! We've recently had an update to our system, so I'm going to go ahead and hand you this whole computer thing *handing them the card reader*, there's one screen for you to go through, after that you can tap or insert your card and then I'll get you a receipt if you'd like one."

Then while they look over the screen I try to ask if they want a straw or stopper so it doesn't seem like I'm just watching them, and I get their items in my hand so I can trade them when the card reader is done. If they dont respond to the receipt bit, i just assume they don't want one if it's peak, or I'll ask again if it's not. Sometimes I like to hand them their first item right as they pull up while I'll giving them their total, to keep things moving even faster.

It sounds a bit slow, but even with this process I can get people out of window in 40 seconds easily. It just takes a while to get the routine down, but you'll figure out what works for you!
mimitalu 1 points 7m ago
I just say "Starbucks just introduced a new tipping system so you gotta navigate through this screen before you can pay" nonchalantly and act like I'm watching something on the computer while they do their thing
gingeral3x 1 points 7m ago
my old coffee shop had us hand out the card reader

say “this is just gonna ask you a couple questions,” while they’re doing their thing, grab their drinks and prep them to be handed out

by the time you’re ready, they’re ready with the card reader. a quick easy exchange with minimal contact. (:
still_orbiting 1 points 7m ago
I’ve been saying, “Here you go - select an option and then you can tap or insert your card” as I pass the machine out the window.

Seems to be more generally understood than “it’s going to ask you a question”, at least in my experience so far.
coconutncracka 1 points 7m ago
i just say (after greeting them) “okay, it’s gonna ask you a question, you can select the options on the screen to continue to the payment” and avoid eye contact LOL
jams1015 1 points 7m ago
I haven't said anything! I was on a register (DTR) for a short bit today for the first time in about a week. I forgot about the tip option at first. I just did what I normally do: Take their card, insert it for them, then turn the PED toward them so if there's an issue (like "DECLINED"), they see it and deal, not me. Anyway, a little kid who always orders for her family from the backseat, driver's side (she's like 10) exclaimed, "Oh! You can tip you guys now, cool!"and she selected the $5 option, lmao. LOVE that kid. I hope her parents were okay with it.

I just kept doing what I normally do, I didn't bring it up and people still tipped more often than not, so I dig it for my baristas! I'll ask them if they have any good ways of mentioning the tip option, but I think I found my spiel from /u/Lejeune68, honestly. Just trade them the PED for a drink!
xxsophiamiller 1 points 7m ago
Forgot to mention in my original comment but sometimes I say “feel free to pick whichever fits best for you!” And people seem to like that
LightnBright88 1 points 7m ago
If they hand me their card, I always say “ok card? Here ya go!!” And then face the reader to them and they put their card in. I don’t say anything about tipping, I feel like people can read.

Me: "Your total is ..."

Them: \*gets out card\*

Me: "Oh btw we have a new system that allows people to tip with their card, you'll see a prompt on the screen, just be sure to tap a response before inserting your card"

Some customers are gonna let you know what they think about it, good or bad. You just have to have a couple go-to responses. For negative feedback, you can be like "ah yeah it is a little direct haha but there's no expectation, it's just an option since we do accept tips here and so many people just don't carry cash anymore!"

My store doesn't have a drive thru but when I'm on register I just look away from the screen when they're paying.
mozziemozzie 1 points 7m ago
i usually hand them the machine and go, “it’ll ask you if you’d like to tip us today, go ahead and take your card out when you get the green check mark”
vics_56 1 points 7m ago
It’s been awkward trying to find something but my shift and I decided on this: “hey there! Your total is x. It’s just going to ask if you’d like to leave a tip really quick.” And while it’s processing I’ll ask about a receipt, straws, and napkins :)
secretsunflowers 1 points 7m ago
i’ve had them put in their card and i’ve put the card in for them; when i see they’re paying with card i say “oh, there’s gonna be a prompt for you” and let them look at the scanner and it’s gone smoothly so far.
TarantulaTeeth13 1 points 7m ago
My go to is - take card, get pos, "hey there's a new option on the card machine, make any selection, we appreciate you!" And then when the total comes up I tap in front of them and hand the card back. Finish the transaction with a thank you and smile!
ababab89 1 points 7m ago
i just make sure i eye whatever they’re payment is when they pull up and when i see a card i hold the thing out the window and just say, “it’s going to ask you a question prior to processing your payment. feel free to select whatever you’d like, but the payment won’t go through unless one is selected” (because without fail someone will completely ignore that and just hold their card over for the chip or stick it in and sit there without hitting anything)
fookyall 1 points 7m ago
I just show them the reader now and say “it’s gonna ask you on the screen if you would Like a leave a tip. Feel free to hit whatever and then you’re going to tap your payment on the screen” a lot
Of them don’t listen though 🙃
laneyyrosee 1 points 7m ago
i hold out the card reader and say “it’s gonna ask if you’d like to leave a tip before inserting your card! totally optional :)”
[deleted] 1 points 7m ago
[removed]
xsammieheartx 1 points 7m ago
I say "So we just got a new screen in our system, it's going to ask you a quick question." "And I hold the card reader out and let them do the transaction. If they look upset, I just say "There is a no thank you option at the bottom if you would like." I've had a lot of people straight up ignore me and try to tap till I tell them 2-3 more times anyways though. My store is in Utah, and surprisingly most people aren't upset about it. I get a lot of people who get excited and they've been waiting years to be able to tip us without cash.
Appropriate_Ad2862 1 points 7m ago
My coworker saids "the pinpad has a question about gratuity" I think its the best way to word it
pzisme 1 points 7m ago
i just say “hey so your total is ___ we do have this new system so it is going to ask you a question on the screen.” and then i hold it out to them and they can tap / insert their card and hit the screen
mangotangoafterdark 1 points 7m ago
i just say it’s going to have to insert your card
Kaluskydrak 1 points 7m ago
“It’s gonna prompt you on the screen, you can select whatever you’d like” works well for me
Deep_Mission_4998 1 points 7m ago
I usually say “it’s gonna ask you if you’d like to add a tip, completely up to you” and if they don’t react ill say “you’ll have to make a selection before it will process”

Why do you feel uncomfortable? Be lucky that we’re able to accept tips on credit cards now.

Bc change is uncomfortable sometimes

At my coffee shop I say “it’s gonna ask if you’d like to tip, if not press the red button to skip it”. Older people can’t follow it so may need to change up the wording 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tbh I leave it to the cafe to collect the tips through the new system, the window is busy and it’s awkward for the person in the window to deal with the card tipping system, I work in a very affluent area and people always go into the rant of “y’all want tip for everything huh” I avoid that all together by hitting the no thanks option before they have a chance.

outside of the missed money, hitting the no, thank you option when the customer is there and able can seriously get you in so much trouble. I believe the training said the no thank you button can ONLY be pressed by a barista in a situation of the transaction being incompleteable, i.e. person left transaction, machine malfunction, or paying out at another register in the building than the one the customer is at.

I’ve thought about this. During peak I’m just going to hit “No thank you” for every transaction, but outside of peak I’ll be like “could you fill this form out for me before paying?”
dazedandconfusedhere 27 points 7m ago
If you hit no thank you every time, you will be losing out on a LOT of tips and if you were at my store, I would be very frustrated to hear a partner was doing this.

From a customer perspective I would also be frustrated because I want to be able to leave a tip if I’m paying with card

Sounds like a great way to get coworkers maf at you fir losing them tip money. A lot of us rely heavily on tip money for gas and other essentials. Don't prioritize "flow" or drive times over your coworkers.
bringitonlife 1 points 7m ago
Yeah, I’m going to stop doing that and just ask next time. 🥲 Luckily I only did it for one shift so hopefully it wasn’t too much money that was lost.
Specialist_Salt_507 11 points 7m ago
Lmao what??? That’s so much money you miss out on!
Queasy_Judge2405 6 points 7m ago
i get the urge to just hit the no thanks button but dont feel nervous to ask for a tip!!! i just say “they implemented a new system, you can click whatever you like” while holding the card reader out. it only takes a few extra seconds. you’re not getting paid more for faster drive times, however you’re making money from tips. i know it can be anxiety inducing to ask for a tip but honestly just go for it
bringitonlife 1 points 7m ago
Yk what, you’re right. I forget drive thru times only matter to the sm. I’ll def just ask from now on! 🤗

I would jump you for that

We aren’t allowed to hit any button on the screen is what I was told. We have to have the customer press it.

Honestly I didn’t even know, I didn’t get a chance to read the training on it. I’ll definitely do on my next shift. I’m no longer going to hit any buttons. Luckily I only did it for one shift so it was a one time thing.

yeah for sure, just trying to save your ass, yknow. my manager really drilled it in that issues with the tipping system would go straight up to the DM
