Customers walking off after ordering a hot coffee or hot tea.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Latter-Guava-4734
I know this is such a minor thing, but for some reason it annoys me so much when it happens and I honestly don’t even know what to do. I’ll be on front register and someone will come up and order a hot coffee or a hot tea. After the payment goes through I ask if they want the receipt and tell them, “I’ll go grab your drink for you.” And turn around to do that. In my experience it’s 50/50. Sometimes they’ll wait by the counter, other times they’ll wander off to go sit or go to the patio to go sit down outside. And I don’t have a name for them since some customers are so insistent on not needing a name for hot coffee.
I just need to know if anyone has any tips for this since I just don’t even know what to do at this point. Lol.

Follow the repeatable routine for front register:
Take order Gather (coffees, hot teas, non-warmed food) Tender payment
Force the impatient fuckers to wait using malicious compliance
Bathe in their tears

this is what we do! gather the order BEFORE you take payment.
as a bonus, it prevents you forgetting about the order (if, like our store, you don’t print stickers for brewed coffee/tea), and they’re much less likely to complain about having to wait since they can walk away with their order as soon as they’ve paid.

I find that while being explicit helps most of the time, it doesn’t guarantee that a customer will be listening to me.
My go to is “If you *wait right here for me*, I can grab your coffee/tea/whatever.”
Some of them still wander off, but most of them get it. Then if they have more stuff I’ll direct them to the handoff when I’m done with them. And for the name thing I absolutely don’t care and will just loudly yell the drink and all it’s mods instead lol.

This. I always say “Alright you can stay right there for me and I’ll grab your coffee/tea/etc.”

I hold them hostage by not taking their payment. We done when *I* say we done.

We tell them to wait and we'll grab it for them. Those that don't wait. I usually put it in front of the other register and keep taking orders. Eventually they'll wonder back to see where their drink is and I just say. Oh i left it right there since I told you'd I'd be right back with it. I'm not wasting every one's time chasing you down.

I say “don’t run off on me, I’ll bring your drink here”

I ALWAYS say “hang tight right here for a sec, I’ll be right back with your coffee/tea/scone/etc….”
And if they walk away I make a big show of handing it to the person now at my register (since they walked away) and then do a big, “Oh! Whoops! Where did they go? Oh, hey there! Here’s your coffee!” While walking it over to them.

Just call the back to get the hot tea or coffee. I usually do that. If it’s food item, I’ll deliver it to them.

I always say “Stick around for a moment while I grab that for ya” and sometimes they still walk away 🧍🏽♀️😭

They sometimes walk off even if I tell them to wait here for their coffee 😭

Sometimes they wander off after I tell them I'm in the process of making it, and we're too busy for me to play hide and seek, so I just put it at the hand-off counter and yell "black coffee, two creams 11 sugar"
Use your ears to listen and your eyeballs to see that I'm working on your coffee.

I start getting it going before they even pay and ask them to wait while I grab it, then I ask if they want sweetener or cream/etc and they can get their money ready or pay with app or card while I finish.
