please don’t be scared to ask for tips. like seriously. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ithinkimanpc
you and your coworkers can make sooo much more if you get over the 3 seconds you use to ask. just a simple “and it’s gonna ask if you want to leave a tip” or “we have a new system that allows you to leave a tip” and a smile can add hundreds to your checks. trust me. my check went up like $250 since card tipping. i’m so tired of seeing people hide the card reader and hitting “no thank you” every time. as someone that’s soft spoken and has anxiety, i learned to speak up and be assertive in this job. the way i think of it is that i deserve these tips and my coworkers deserve these tips and YOU deserve these tips. pls don’t let anxiety or fear or rejection stop you from getting what you deserve. the worst they can do is press “no thank you” and honestly it’s not that serious lol

Policy is to hand it out anyways and make them read the prompt. Allowing a partner to 100% of the time complete the prompts is bad… could easily allow theft.
I always tell people it’s just easier to hand out the pos device because it keeps cards from being lost at the store and doesn’t leave any room for “well the barista tipped my card”
No sir, we never touched ur card. 😉 just my two cents
ithinkimanpc [OP] 11 points 7m ago
that’s also a concern ! people have accused us of doing that even before the tip option so it can only cause more trouble now. here’s a tip for your two cents😊

Choosing "No thank you" to avoid awkwardness takes opportunities for extra money out of your co-workers pockets, and that isn't a choice you should feel OK taking.
ithinkimanpc [OP] 3 points 7m ago
exactly which why it was so infuriating to see my coworker do, i mean who knows how many more do it to !’

We literally aren’t allowed to touch the screen unless they physically need assistance due to a disability.

I get being shy or anxious about it, but it’s no different than having cash jars. If people get pissy about the prompts, just remind them that we live in a digital world and a lot of people just don’t carry cash anymore but would still like to tip. It’s completely optional.
ithinkimanpc [OP] 2 points 7m ago
exactly, and again, the worse they could say is “no”. i always hand the card reader to this one lady and she says out loud “no thanks” and shakes her hand and im like “ok but u still have to press it”
mattbones 11 points 7m ago
Im hate telling them.about it. My boss took us all aside to.show us how much we were making. It was almost another 2 dollars per hour so ill keep on hating it and keep on asking :)
ithinkimanpc [OP] 1 points 7m ago
yes yes yes, we went from $400 to $1400 a week after getting the card tipping. definitely ask, you’ll thank yourself so much later
mossygreentree13 8 points 7m ago
yeah i just hand the system out and say “alright it’s gonna ask you a quick question before your card will process” and then pretty much immediately after telling them that i’ll usually ask them “and did you want any straws today?” or “and did you need your receipt with you today?” to keep me from feeling awkward
ithinkimanpc [OP] 1 points 7m ago
lol i awkwardly look like anywhere else but at the screen
chicken-tiddies 5 points 7m ago
I just hand them the whole thing and tell them "it's gonna ask you a couple questions" I know it's just one but they pay attention if I say a couple.

I told someone it would ask for a tip and got verbally berated and I am like 4 bad interactions away from a one way ticket on the rainbow bridge, so I think my coworkers will be fine.
ithinkimanpc [OP] 1 points 7m ago
oh wow. like $1 is gonna add so much more than an $8 latte🙄
Dependent_Magazine89 3 points 7m ago
Like seriously, do you not wanna work for your money?
ithinkimanpc [OP] 3 points 7m ago
every other service industry can do it, so why can’t we ??? however, i’ve had some people who are like “finally you got these ! you deserve it !”and they tip $5 which makes all the awkward moments just fade away
Dependent_Magazine89 2 points 7m ago
EXACTLY, the first day it came out, I had a lady tell me how happy she was that we finally had cc tipping because literally no one carries cash anymore and she felt bad for never being able to tip, so she was so happy to give us like $10, it's so worth having this feature now

>i’m so tired of seeing people hide the card reader and hitting “no thank you” every time.

This itself should be a MAJOR no-no. Anyone who is doing this - you are depriving yourself and your team of potential additional income. That is unacceptable. If it only affected you, that would be your choice. But it affects others' paychecks and that is not okay.

Imagine hiding the tip jar when you're on register. That's the equivalent of what you're doing. That is not okay. Starbucks accepts tips. The card reader is providing customers the option. It is not your place to deny customers that option or to deny your partners the opportunity to earn income.
ithinkimanpc [OP] 2 points 7m ago
this. this is why i’ll NEVER be embarrassed. idc. thankfully, after i gave my coworker a *look* when i noticed them doing that, they stopped hiding it but i still get a little suspicious when they’re on window, like i gotta make sure they’re doing their job smh
honeycuup 2 points 7m ago
i just shove the reader out the window if i see they’re paying w a card and i say “it’s gonna ask u a quick question if u could just answer that first for me”
such a tiny question for possible extra money 🤷🏻‍♀️
ithinkimanpc [OP] 1 points 7m ago
exactly, 2 seconds to ask can add hundreds to that check🤷‍♂️
Venus_Fox18 2 points 7m ago
I was told today that we are allowed to say "tip". I was telling people " ok, so it'll have you do this before we move on, if you don't wanna leave a tip that's absolutely fine, I just can't touch the screen for you" and one of my shifts came up and said "for future reference, we aren't allowed to say tip when talking about the new tipping screen. Try saying something like it's gonna have a question for you to answer before we can move on"
ithinkimanpc [OP] 4 points 7m ago
really ?? that’s sounds a little silly tbh. but ig that makes sense. i used to say “and if you could follow the instructions on the screen” which usually worked so if my manger ever says something, i’ll just go back to that
Venus_Fox18 2 points 7m ago
It sounds dumb to me, but I also think the rule that we can't touch the screen is dumb because I've had a lot of people who use reading glasses not be able to see what's on the screen but I was told I can't touch it so I just have to like guide them to the button they want
clouds183 3 points 7m ago
we aren’t allowed to (except in cases of physical disability, in which case we select no thank you and provide a receipt, physical disability can include needing glasses and not having them on)
ithinkimanpc [OP] 1 points 7m ago
i didn’t know that ! we haven’t really gotten a talk about what to do and what not to do with the pos but i think we should !

we’re supposed to be saying something?? i just let them read when they want to use card lmao.
ithinkimanpc [OP] 1 points 7m ago
i do bc sometimes i haven’t said anything and they think they can take their card out n im like “woah woah, it’s not done yet” lol
honey_bay 0 points 7m ago
so far i’ve only hit no thank you twice, and they both don’t speak english
ithinkimanpc [OP] 1 points 7m ago
ok that’s the only valid reason. that and if the person has a disability that prevents them from being able to.
