What’s the standard for charging? I’m a partner of one year and recently became an SSV, and have always been taught any amount of steamed milk must be charged for, per my SM and a few other long time partners.
This morning i rang a man’s dark roast with steamed half and half with the .70 charge, and he proceeded to argue with me saying “you can go ahead and charge me, but just know i’ll be calling corporate and they’re going to tell me you’re not supposed to be charging me and they’ll give me a $20 credit again.”
just wanted to know the standard on charges.

I have never been taught to charge for steamed milk if the customer wants 4 oz or less. I think the policy should be made more clear either way, but my reasoning is the beverage resource manual says that you charge if more than 4 oz of milk is added to a water based drink. It doesn’t list any exceptions, and also implies that it doesn’t matter if you have to use more than 4 oz of milk in the steaming pitcher, as long as no more than 4 oz ends up in the drink. (And if they wanted to add an upcharge to the “steamed” button on the POS, they would do that.)

Nah if steamed milk were a charge then it would do so just like the blended button.

Why would he be complaining about a $20 credit for 70¢. Get your labor, charge him, I always did. If it means he gets free coffee afterwards I wouldn’t be complaining. 🤷♂️

Or don’t charge people for things that they shouldn’t be charged for?
badbaristuh2 points7m ago
Big difference in someone gently making a correction on how something is charged and flipping out on a barista and telling them they’ll call corporate. I’d be charging that guy for the inconvenience.

Following this. I would also love to know

if it's less than 4oz then it's just the 1/2" button + the "steamed" customization, iirc. more than 4oz (ie grande pike in a venti cup, fill to the top with cream) gets the charge. adding the "steamed" customization doesn't incur an extra charge.

if it’s less than 50/50 (a misto) then we shouldn’t charge

If I recall correctly, I was taught to always charge for steamed milk/half + half/heavy cream, whether it was for a brewed coffee, hot espresso drink, or oatmeal. Basically I was taught that the steaming aspect is extra labor on our part, so it’s an extra charge
Also, I was taught “breve” is steamed half + half, which is why that option is an extra charge

Are you a partner at a licensed store? I’ve heard of them doing funky things with charging differently. Unless it’s more than 4 ounces we don’t charge for milk in brewed coffees
coffee-and-chillll1 points7m ago
Nope, I’ve been at a corporate store for 4 years. I think I was just trained wrong on this aspect. I don’t charge for milk in brewed coffees unless it’s steamed, but lesson learned on that
nicoolspams1 points7m ago
How were you charging for steamed? When we hit the steamed button it does not add any additional charges I’m at work rn and i just tried it
coffee-and-chillll1 points7m ago
I didn’t mean the steamed button, I meant the milk options on the left that add the additional charge. The steamed button doesn’t add a charge. The milk charging has always confused me, lesson learned on it though 😅
Ordinary-Theory-82891 points7m ago
The steamed button doesn’t add an extra charge so I’m just wondering how you’re charging people for something that we don’t have an option to charge for lol
coffee-and-chillll1 points7m ago
I wasn’t referring to the steamed button, I meant using the milk selection options (on the left side) that includes the extra charge. Lesson learned though
Ordinary-Theory-82891 points7m ago
Those are for milk based drinks. Drip coffee or americanos are water based
coffee-and-chillll1 points7m ago
Got it. Just one of those small details that I misunderstood, lesson learned
