ice machine has been leaking for multiple days, no person has come to fix it we are still open and baristas are working in a puddle of water, this has to be some kind of violation right? (reddit.com)

Yes standing water is a violation I believe but more importantly a safety hazard. idk maybe try putting some mop heads down in front of the machine to make a barrier.

Serious question, how often do you guys deep clean it? When I got hired as a manager at a licensed store no one gave me proper training and I had to wing it. It wasn’t until this happened that I realized it should be emptied and deep cleaned monthly. The drains could possibly be clogged with all sorts of yuck.
malik445 [OP] 42 points 7m ago
hasn’t been deep cleaned since june, not my responsible though i’m a barista our manager is negligent
Hour_Interview_9883 32 points 7m ago
No definitely wasn’t putting the blame on you! I just know from experience that it was most likely the cause. It would be a cheap solution rather than to call someone in to “fix” it
malik445 [OP] 17 points 7m ago
don’t worry i did not think you were, thank you for your advice

Where are y’all’s anti fatigue mats?
malik445 [OP] 48 points 7m ago
manager threw them away a couple months ago 😼
clouds183 38 points 7m ago
ask your dm about it. because thats likely an osha violation for not having the mats. I asked my dm about it and they were ordered the next week.
Blocked_ID 10 points 7m ago
It’s not an OSHA requirement, we don’t have them in our store and honestly idc bc I don’t want to have to clean them 💀
sheep_heavenly 19 points 7m ago
It is for areas that are expected to be slick with water. The point of the mats isn't anti fatigue, although that is a fabulous help, the point is anti slip.

Those floors are tile, so not the newer anti slip flooring, so mats are required per internal policy and workplace safety laws.
whatcakepopsdouhave 5 points 7m ago
Not OSHA maybe but it is a starbucks requirement. Safety and security manual explicitly states we have to have them
whatcakepopsdouhave 4 points 7m ago
Major safety violation, safety and security manual specifies all stores HAVE to have the mats. Raise hell, please. That's not ok.
ElijahLordoftheWoods 4 points 7m ago
That’s a huge safety hazard. You need to go higher up, y’all are gonna slip and get hurt and you’ll hurt your feet/knees
Nraveles11 2 points 7m ago
Mats??? Been at my store for over a year we never had mats 💀
cvpocoffee 1 points 7m ago
how are the mats anti fatigue exactly?
ElijahLordoftheWoods 2 points 7m ago
They help support your feet. Even with them I still need good insoles. That comes from years of working on my feet without them. Y’all that are in your 20s *need* to self advocate for this stuff cuz if you’re still working in your feet in your mid 30s and you haven’t had them you will be in pain after every shift. I’m having physical therapy for hip and back pain its gotten so bad.
ProfessorSalt413 1 points 7m ago
My store only had mats for a few weeks but no one wanted to clean them so my SM just threw them out
No_Indication_5205 3 points 7m ago
If someone wants to sue for any conditions they develop with their feet, legs, back pain and/or damage.. id suggest it. Its 1000% a work health and safety violation. You're all definitely suffering physical damage because of it and having to be planted frequently.

The Store Manager needs to be a leader and care for the partners. They need to find a way to make that task easier or less painful, NOT take away a safety measure. They will be in hot water for that.
ProfessorSalt413 1 points 7m ago
Yeah my knees I feel like have been hurting way more than they used to before I worked here
No_Indication_5205 1 points 7m ago
Theres also labor laws. Look up what they are for your specific region and what to do if they're being violated. This is a big violation where I'm from.

The reason starbucks provides mats is also to keep them safe from these violations. I'm sure that ethics wouldn't be too happy to hear this or your DM.
dallizzlee 0 points 7m ago
Ha our manager took them away because “they’re too hard to clean”
ElijahLordoftheWoods 2 points 7m ago
Call your DM. It’s a huge slip hazard. It’s a such a MASSIVE liability that corporate actually gives a shit if they aren’t out
greenChainsaws 31 points 7m ago
come with me
and you'll be
in a woooorld of osha violations!
retsehassyla 12 points 7m ago
Ew!! A store in my district went on strike for dirty ice machines. Low key want to also since my SM is incompetent and can’t schedule a regular clean play 🙄
sheep_heavenly 8 points 7m ago
Imagine if every store with cleanliness issues due to scheduling/lack of maintenance striked. Damn near the whole country would be out.
Ordinary-Economist-7 11 points 7m ago
Your shifts can call and ask to escalate the ticket to priority 1. Also check the drain, ours leaks all the time because the drain is blocked
cottonheadedninnymug 2 points 7m ago
Also sometimes they have a pvc pipe that leads to a floor drain. The pipe can become dislodged pretty easily and the water goes onto the floor. It's also easy to fix, you just need to jam the pipe back into the fitting
Ordinary-Economist-7 1 points 7m ago
This happens to my store all the time
Necessary_Low939 5 points 7m ago
I worked like this once, not at Starbucks. It was annoying.
kearadunne 4 points 7m ago
The big violation is not properly managing the water. Squeegee it into the floor drains and put mats over the the area that the water is collecting.

I recommend deep cleaning the ice machine and turning it off overnight to avoid the leak getting worse
HarleySpicedLatte 4 points 7m ago
Check the pipe in back. Did it come loose? Also see if pipe is going straight into drain.
meltedgh0st 3 points 7m ago
That's a nassssty fall waiting to happen.
Hazel_is_Trans 3 points 7m ago
Yes
different_as_can_be 2 points 7m ago
hell they tried to make us work and stay open when our drains were clogged and the store flooded. we had to “clean” even after they closed with the smell of raw sewage in the air. no way that was ethical or legal.
desperatenuff 1 points 7m ago
where are your mats?

What kind of ice machine is it? If it’s anything like mine I had a similar issue, but it was just because one piece was in place upside down.
molwalk 1 points 7m ago
Slip over and you'll never have to work again 🤑
