Thanksgiving hell (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Ok-Description4413
Our thanksgiving broke records. It was busier than red cup day. I’m exhausted. Why the hell are you people not at home with your family? Go away.

I also HATE when people say stuff like “thank you for being here. Too bad you can’t be with your family right now” YEAH BECAUSE YOU MFS NEED UR SKINNY VANILLA LATTES. I don’t need your pity.
erin_33 239 points 7m ago
literally they’re like “sorry you have to be here” *as they are the reason i have to be here*

PapaJey 72 points 7m ago
If someone was actually sorry they wouldn’t show up. It just shows they are aware of what they’re doing but still doing it anyways. I’m not mad because our store has employees volunteer to work today, it’s time and a half and we are pretty low volume, but I can see people getting annoyed at someone ordering 6 custom drinks then apologizing about being open.
jcduckduck 39 points 7m ago
Read the fucking room.
aerkyanite 11 points 7m ago
This is the correct answer.
peachyqween11 30 points 7m ago
because 98% of the customers saying that are genuinely oblivious to the fact it's people like them who decide to go buy over priced coffee on a family oriented holiday that are the reason stores are even open on said holiday...
Queerguy24 8 points 7m ago
We’re shaming people that apologize for legit being the reason we are here. If they didn’t come in during thanksgiving we wouldn’t make money and we wouldn’t need to be open.
caffein8dnotopi8d 1 points 7m ago
it’s a pretty pointless apology! not like you just accidentally got in your car, drove here, and walked in the door/got in line behind the other cars! i suppose people do apologize for other things they clearly and intentionally did, but i think it’s just as pointless!
LaurdAlmighty 204 points 7m ago
Someone posted almost the same thing in the actual sbux reddit and the bootlicking ensued lol

Either tip or don't say anything
[deleted] 47 points 7m ago
reading that was absolutely maddening
kitcat1210 22 points 7m ago
so glad i wasnt crazy… it really was but NO one was saying anything against it so i just thought i was alone on it
[deleted] 25 points 7m ago
me too… OP’s opinion definitely was the general consensus at every store i’ve worked at. the mental gymnastics people pull in order to make going to Starbucks an absolutely necessity kills me.
LaurdAlmighty 4 points 7m ago
Very wild to see
LaurdAlmighty 13 points 7m ago
I was flabbergasted then I remembered how I made a post a couple months ago about how baristas on the sub seem to coddle the masses so badly.
chamorrobro 5 points 7m ago
Omg yes. There was someone who was like “I say thank you when they say sorry that I have to work, because some people have no one else to spend their holidays with.” Like, sure, that’s like a silver lining when you’re forced to work, but that doesn’t address the fact that people shouldn’t be forced to work that day in the first place.

I guess people upvoted and gave it rewards because they were like “Awww, so cute, that’s true,” but we don’t need anymore excuses for corporations to keep their businesses open on Thanksgiving. EVEN WAL MARTS WERE CLOSED IN MY AREA FOR THANKSGIVING!! Idk if that’s how it was nationwide, but HELLO? Can corporate like wake tf up and start volunteer-only for holidays other than Christmas?

Don’t even get me started on the holiday understaffing, so that they still turn their profits from having to pay time and a half. Absolutely disgusting.

“Can corporate like wake tf up and start volunteer-only for holidays other than Christmas?”

Let’s not sit back and pretend like something isn’t a problem. There are solutions out there that can cater to nearly everyone.

Edit: I’m really sorry, I realize that came off as aggressive :c That’s my bad

I think its lost in the post tl but it's on the main sbux reddit literally just r/starbucks
Bhaisaab86 120 points 7m ago
Omgosh I’m sooo sorry they’re making you work today! You should be with your family!! Anyway, I need three CRCF two with extra caramel, two BOSE both with cold foam one with extra caramel, and just a venti black cold brew. OH! And I need three double-smoked bacon, two impossible, and two bacon sausage wraps. I can’t believe you have to work today!

*no tip* 😘
Ok-Description4413 [OP] 20 points 7m ago
Literally!!!
Bhaisaab86 13 points 7m ago
It’s all I heard, all day long lol
GreenTourmaline13 10 points 7m ago
I could not believe our food sales! On a day already associated w gluttony and excess!
Life_deep_ 80 points 7m ago
people have no concept of respecting service works as actual human beings. it’s sickening. they feel like they have anonymity because we’re just a “starbucks barista” and they can be a jerk and get away with it, it’s sad
linseeded 8 points 7m ago
The amount of people who also don’t care abt our health and will come thru the drive thru sick…
trousersquid 10 points 7m ago
"CAN I GET- *cough hack cough* -ONE OF THEM MEDICINE BOMBS?!"
Androgenousblob 64 points 7m ago
I understand some restraunts because that might be the only thanksgiving someone can get but you DO NOT need to get a coffee from starbs ya just don’t
Ok-Description4413 [OP] 22 points 7m ago
If someone can afford to go out for thanksgiving meal, they can afford to make it at home. It’s almost always more expensive to go out.
Androgenousblob 40 points 7m ago
Some people don’t have family? Some people are homeless? Some people have a rotten family that hates them and no? A plate of food at a Restaurant is not equivalent to a thanksgiving feast

NO I LITERALLY HAD THIS TODAY. some girl literally was like. “happy thanksgiving!! gosh im so sorry you have to be here, thank you for everything gosh youre amazing,” goes on this whole rant.. orders $50 worth of drinks and doesnt tip. MAN HOW SORRY ARE YOU THEN.. u
Snarfungus 36 points 7m ago
thanksgiving is the biggest travel holiday, and everyone comes through with their whole families in the car. i was lucky enough not to work it this year, but last year we had an average of 5 drinks per car in drive, and they were often two lattes and 3 different fraps for the kids. we ran out of hot breakfast by 10 am. i understand why we’re open, but at the same time, it seems like every starbucks is understaffed for the amount of business we know we’re going to have.

hope you’re doing alright OP, and everyone else who worked today
long-pit 29 points 7m ago
oh my lord even WALMARTS in my area were closed. IF A GROCERY/SUPERSTORE IS CLOSED. A FUCKING SEMI LUXURY COFFEE CORPORATION SHOULD BE TOO.
sorensobbin 29 points 7m ago
Today was the first time I cried in two and a half years at this certain store (5+ year partner here)

At 12:30, we dropped from 6 people to a 2-person floor and hell ensued in the cafe. Had to put myself on bar as a SSV because the other partner was a green bean who still wasn’t comfortable.

Had about 15 mobiles in a row with 4+ drinks each since we have a 5k that happens in the neighborhood I work at, a lobby full of customers out the door, and to top it off, I accidentally left on the cold brew tap and made one of the biggest messes trying to sequence to the best of my ability amid the chaos.

My closing baristas were fantastic though and although new, needed little guidance for close tonight so I was very grateful to them. ❤️🥹 Remember to recognize your fellow partners for the past couple of hectic days!
thespiritaco 26 points 7m ago
It felt like everyone was 10x ruder today too. Like people were just furious that their 15 drinks were taking longer than 5 minutes when everybody in the cafe ordered an unhealthy amount of drinks.
linseeded 4 points 7m ago
THIS ugh
Asian_Emily 14 points 7m ago
We thankfully had less people coming thru than most days. Downsides everyone that was coming thru was ordering gigantic orders. Our biggest order this morning was like $90
dontcry2022 10 points 7m ago
>Downsides everyone that was coming thru was ordering gigantic orders. Our biggest order this morning was like $90

Wtf? I don't understand this. My family was preparing our meal most of the morning, food ready by 1pm. We all just snacked a little earlier in the morning so our stomachs wouldn't be growling while cooking and waiting. How do these people have *the time* and *the will* to go out in a group to grab coffees and breakfast food? Makes no sense.

I'm a barista and got the day off, trust me I was craving my usual morning latte too, but I just got my caffeine fix at home. No time, energy, or will to leave the house for Starbucks.
the1noir 12 points 7m ago
Got time and a half and HELLA tips
So I’m chilling.
dontcry2022 12 points 7m ago
Wow I hate it for you that it's such a busy day. I don't understand it either. And if people are gonna go in, the BARE MINIMUM they can do is 1) be patient and polite and 2) tip.

I hope you enjoy your holiday pay and the tips that hopefully came from how busy it was.
nicolelynnejones 8 points 7m ago
In Massachusetts the day before any major holiday is the “I’ll have an iced coffee with ___, and can I have another of the same but with no ice? I’m putting it in my fridge to drink for tomorrow.” day. Not just starbies but like every iced coffee place. Dunks, Top Donut, Heavnly…
Hazel_is_Trans 8 points 7m ago
I kinda don’t want to work Christmas anymore
cory_putnam 3 points 7m ago
Xmas isn’t even close to as bad as thanksgiving tbh. most people aren’t traveling on Christmas Day, they’re likely already at their destinations.
mossygreentree13 2 points 7m ago
christmas you get your own tips too👀👀 so if you make $200 in tips that day it’s only split between the partners that worked on Christmas day
ladyMmJay 7 points 7m ago
We had a COVID outbreak in our Thanksgiving host family. I had to wake up at 6am and throw together a thanksgiving feast for my household. Got a coffee and tipped $20. Didn't bother with the gushing, just gave my $$. Wish I could have done the same at the grocery stores I raided.
Professional_Ad_1491 7 points 7m ago
we had a parade set up a block away from my location 🫠 definitely slower than normal day but still a lot for who volunteered for today
Downtown_Asparagus71 4 points 7m ago
It was the first time in a long time I thought - I’m out of here And as we completed massive orders , I plotted my next steps
Average order size 4-16. Wtf people.
And our crappy food … just why?
Drama because no more double smoked?
Melodic_Oil_2486 4 points 7m ago
We goto SBux as a tradition to get out of the house while the bird is cooking. We enjoy the holiday feeling, and tip generously.
BeardiesRule112 1 points 7m ago
Why not get out of the house for a nice walk?
WelcomeReasonable 3 points 7m ago
What's worse is we were the only damn Starbucks location opened in our city :/
All the others got to close. Didn't help that like two people didn't show up so it was only 3 of us
caffein8dnotopi8d 3 points 7m ago
whenever someone said that

>thank you for being here. too bad you can’t be with your family

shit while i was working at starbucks/dunkin, i would also say (in my super nice customer service voice) something like: “yeah, it would be nice to be home but you wouldn’t believe how busy it is! IF IT WASN’T PROFITABLE WE WOULDN’T BE HERE!” usually you could see the wheels turning in their brain.
Repulsive_Bus6693 3 points 7m ago
I’m here working now and it’s beyond shitty. Crusty customers getting mad for a long wait time that they’re causing! SM refuses to shut off mobiles. Words don’t describe how shitty all the partners are feeling.
RoughEvidence 3 points 7m ago
Tbh, I think we should blame Corporate and not the actual customers for having to work on holidays. Many companies let their employees have holidays off, but Starbucks is money hungry.
RoccoSteal 3 points 7m ago
I’m still confused why everyone wants Starbucks on Thanksgiving day. Cuz I’d imagine they’d be all up in grocery stores buying Turkeys or just at home already enjoying it instead.
hantnah 1 points 7m ago
Big travel day 🤷🏼‍♀️ to be fair, I always need coffee if I’m traveling

Last night someone said “I really appreciate you being open on thanksgiving, even though you might not like it, it’s still cool” Like no fucking way you just said that 😐
Ok-Description4413 [OP] 2 points 7m ago
Sucks for you but I’m happy so 🖕🏻
cswtf 2 points 7m ago
Are you guys mandated to work holidays? Or, I guess I should ask, do you unwillingly get put on the schedule for holidays if others don’t sign up? The only reason I ever chose to work a holiday was for the extra money, but that was my choice. Nowadays, everywhere is so short staffed, it made me wonder?
Myebix 1 points 7m ago
if enough people request off, my manager at least will declare no more request offs and deny anyone else who tries. unless it's a religious holiday like christmas bc he can get in trouble for that. so if you don't put in your request early, you will get stuck on the holiday.
BabyH1ppo 2 points 7m ago
"thank you for being open. I REALLY needed my coffee today"
goddessofwaterpolo 1 points 7m ago
Aw I’m sorry for the rough day. I ended up being too busy but I wanted to bring some cute cookies to the Starbucks I go to in my area. I hope you got to have a good meal eventually.
Individual_Village47 1 points 7m ago
The only people for me that get a pass on that are health care workers (especially pediatric hospital folk right now), firefighters, and other service industry people. Even then they should be saying more along the lines of, “Thank you for being here. I’m sorry we BOTH have to work today.” We’re in the same boat as them so I’m happy to give them some caffeine or comfort before going to work or finally getting to go home.

Been on that side before during 2020. I was the only person to show up to work a senior home that wasn’t essential (i.e. food, meds, etc.) to make sure everyone got some kind of a Thanksgiving and Christmas during hard core lockdowns. Everyone else went to see family and ended up spreading COVID more through the facility, causing 2 deaths. Just getting a warm, sugary, and caffeinated cup of coffee gives that comfort that was so desperately needed.
