So I woke up with a fever and cough today, all signs point to flu. I texted 7 people to see if they could take my shift tomorrow in an abundance of caution.. no one has replied. Would it be weird or would it be proactive if I called the store today and told my manager I won’t be coming in tomorrow? I just don’t want to hope I feel better but then end up still feeling sick and wait until tomorrow morning to call out.. so at least they have time to work the schedule out.
I don’t want to get anyone sick (I’m sick because coworkers came to work sick) so can I call out for tomorrow, today? Or is that somehow against policy? I’ve never called out before so I’m nervous. TIA.

Yes, call your manager now and tell them you won't be able to come in tomorrow. If you're sick it's the managers responsibility to find someone to fill in for you, not yours. If you just woke up with these symptoms today, they'll definitely be there tomorrow.

I ended up reaching out to him. Thank you for the advice!

Note that you also can’t go back to work until you’ve been symptom-free for 24 hours! Specifically the fever and maybe the cough too?

It’s best to always give heads up as soon as you can. I always try to find someone to cover me first to see if I can save sick hours but the earliest is best for the store, more time to ask other stores if they can get a borrowed partner, and whoever is filling in for you will have more time to plan their day around that shift
