super bad at dtr in front of district manager help (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by cinam0roll
my district manager came in today and was watching us really closely early in the morning and i was on dtr. i really dont like dtr because im so bad at starting conversation when someones sitting there im just scared to annoy them and my head goes completely silent and i like freeze and cant say anything other than the scripted what their price is and stuff.

so i was waiting on this guys two five shot americanos and he looked like a pretty angry guy anyway who didn't want to talk and the manager and district manager were 2 ft behind me staring and then the ssv had to move me to warming bc i wasnt saying anything which is fine warming is wayyy better but i feel so terrible now

i feel like im going to get fired or written up anf that i ruined their opinion of the store and everyone is going to hate me for it but as much as i try i really cant do drive thru window register stuff . am i going to get yelled at for this later or fired obviously they could replace me with someone whos good at talking so help

That sounds so uncomfortable! I’m really sorry that happened to you. I hate being observed.

Take a breath. Just use it to learn from and move on. In the future you can be honest with the team and let them know you get nervous.

DTR sucks sometimes. I hate it too bc I hate small talk. You just have to find your script. A simple how is your day going while taking payment totally counts. You don’t need to get into any in-depth conversations. It gets awkward standing there waiting on drinks to be made especially when the customers seem grumpy or are on the phone.
You can also give them updates on their drink order. “Sorry for the wait, 10 shots takes a minute. But I will have it out as soon as possible”
As an SSV, I honestly just want to see that the customers are not being ignored and that you aren’t turning your back on them.
It takes time to learn your groove, it is their job to coach and encourage you to be better not to go straight to punishment. Ask your peers for advice if you feel comfortable going to them.
It will be ok!! Good luck
