Tell me if I’m crazy but my sm and two ssvs at my current store allow people to order hot chocolate travelers. I’m an ssv also and if I’m ever the one to be asked if we do that, I always say no and encourage the baristas to do the same. It’s been an ongoing conflict since last year as to why my sm is letting this happen in the first place because every other store I’ve worked at has always made it very clear that we won’t do that. I’ve reached my breaking point because they let someone order a 5 gal cambro of hot coco recently and I’m completely over it. Should I bring this up to the dm, or did I miss something and this is acceptable? From my perspective, it’s a huge liability because of the milk temp. Temp danger zones and such. It’s also a major inconvenience to the unlucky soul that has to steam 6 pitchers of milk and carefully pour them into the tiny spout, while also keeping up with regular drink orders. But from my sm’s perspective, it’s a huge sale he’s unwilling to turn away.

You should definitely bring it up to the dm, I really don't think that's allowed
Icy-Cardiologist-714 [OP]30 points7m ago
Will do. Thank you!
wolfydoe26 points7m ago
How do they even make it taste good, add the mocha to the milk or just pump a bunch in and hope for the best?
Icy-Cardiologist-714 [OP]20 points7m ago
The latter haha put the cap on, give it a few shakes, and send it
JustAnotherRyan531 points7m ago
This is awful. First off, this whole thing is a no, but second, randomly pumping mocha is not at all proper beverage quality for a hot chocolate and idk how your manager thinks it’s okay. If def says they are not safe for holding milk temps on the partner hub and on the iPad under store resources. Just search traveler.
theepi_pillodu19 points7m ago
Hot milk and shaking the closed containers?
That's some dumb move right?
LaurdAlmighty6 points7m ago
Pls update when you do
celloqueer116 points7m ago
It’s not allowed. If you look up travelers on partner hub they are only for brewed coffee—no dairy.
glo-frog1 points7m ago
Hi! Came back to this post for your comment, where on the hub can I find that? I searched travelers and can’t find anything saying no dairy. I need to prove a point bc my manager allowed 4 travelers today after I told her it’s not allowed.
Ristrettooo80 points7m ago
Time to get the DM involved. Aside from the fact that you can’t even ring that in and your manager should take a hint, there is nooooo way that’s food safe
Icy-Cardiologist-714 [OP]31 points7m ago
That’s what I’ve been saying. I didn’t want to go above him if it wasn’t necessary so I’ve been trying to explain from a food safety point but he’s decided to die on this hill. Thanks for the feedback!

>I’ve been trying to explain from a food safety point but he’s decided to die on this hill.
What's he dying of? Food poisoning from the hot cocoa traveler?!
Icy-Cardiologist-714 [OP]23 points7m ago
Update!! I sat him down today and said listen up bozo! Lol not really. I told him, I’m now extremely confident that I’m right about this. I found on the partner hub that we are not supposed to be putting any dairy in the travelers. Also, I asked a bunch of fellow partners what they thought about it and all of them are horrified, are seriously questioning your judgement, and are strongly encouraging me to talk to the dm. So if you want to keep doing this then I’ll have no choice but to go over your head. It’s disgusting, it’s not safe, it’s annoying af and we’re done. He took it surprisingly well, only got defensive for a second and agreed that it’s gross and it will stop. He 100% did not want me talking to the dm. He said he’ll spread the word to the other ssvs. So basically, thanks for giving me a backbone. The hot chocolate traveler nightmare is finally over!

It's a Festivus miracle!

dude what… how did this even start 😭😭
xEman26x14 points7m ago
It’s because Dunkin’ does hot cocoa boxes so customers come in expecting the same from Sbux.
I used to love telling them no.

It doesn’t usually violate state or county food standard regulations. If there is no button on the POS for it, don’t do it. Don’t make a big deal about it and if your manager is there, tell the customer , “ thank you for understanding that I don’t have a button on the Pos for it and I have to get my manager to ring it in”. Close your till out and ask your manager to do it. If they won’t or aren’t there, tell them you cannot make a traveler for hot chocolate, apologize for the inconvenience, and recommend that the customer orders the hot chocolates as individual drinks rather than a traveler. The upsell on a traveler at that point is easy and you can offer some mocha on the side and mark it out as a product sample 👍🏻
kearadunne5 points7m ago
Like a coffee traveler to go along with some hot chocolates for kids 👍🏻 mocha syrup in the half and half doesn’t break any rules if you mark out the mocha as a sample or ring it in on one of the drinks
Binx_da_gay_cat3 points7m ago
Besides right now recovery, is there a way to ring something out as a sample?
kearadunne0 points7m ago
Yes, in the cogs file. I think there is a digital way to do it for supervisors though. 👍🏻
Zealousideal-Star44811 points7m ago
Refuse to do this and call your DM if nothing happens in a week call spam food safety inspector cuz that can get someone very very sick
iAmbassador9 points7m ago
Wow the joke has become reality. A former coworker of mine told my sister as a joke to order a hot chocolate traveler for a Friendsgiving even, and she took him seriously. She said she was so embarrassed when the partner at the register told her we don't do those. It was a funny practical joke, but there's no way I thought any stores were actually doing them.
kobo156 points7m ago
Absolutely no milk in a traveler. I recently did a traveler of just hot water for someone who ordered a bunch of tea bags in addition to coffee travelers, but that’s the only non coffee thing I’ve willing to do
Swimming-Fee-24456 points7m ago
I would think that it could be a potential health issue with the steamed milk in the traveller. I thought it was only for coffee? I would let the DM know this
swallowingpixies3 points7m ago
I’d literally pull some shit up from partner hub and have them read it n say we aren’t providing a consistent experience between stores wtf
Whang3 points7m ago
Does your SM want to be *the other Starbucks* because this is how you do it.
photo_rain3 points7m ago
We’ve done hot water travelers before for people who have their own powder for coco… but that’s it. Definitely sounds like getting DM involved is the right move
Creative-Clothes-5203 points7m ago
My store manager would lose their shit if they can into us dumping steamed milk and random mocha pumps into a Cambro lmao
hmarie07162 points7m ago
No, no, no and no. Please update on what your DM says because this is a huge liability issue.
darkwolf5232 points7m ago
Being it up with the dm. Not allowed

Pretty confident that isn’t allowed. Only Dunkin’ has Hot Chocolate “Travelers” (box o’ joes) from what I understand.
Domestica1 points7m ago
I had to make two hot chocolate travelers a couple years back. They were for an event that the SM’s spouse was hosting, so of course we had to make them. I got a venti cup and just kept making venti hot chocolates and pouring them into the traveler, using the same cup the whole time. I lost track of how many I had made by the 25 mark. The traveler was like half foam by the time it was full and I made a ridiculous mess trying to fill the travelers. 0/10 would not recommend. Most annoying thing I ever had to make.
Necessary_Low9390 points7m ago
Never in my 10 years heard about hot chocolate travelers, ur sm is definitely creative.
