Anyone else’s shifts pushing breaks back 3-4 hours? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by canidieyet_
My shift approached me today and told me my lunch would be at 3:30. My schedule is 9-6. My lunch was scheduled to be around 1:30. We had 9 people working & super slow, so it wasn’t like we were short staffed and slammed. If that were the case, I would have understood. Both of my 10s were run before 11am. I only got my lunch on time today because I told the shift I would pass out if I waited any longer. I hadn’t eaten for almost 18 hours at that point & started feeling really sick/lightheaded because of it.

This has been a common occurrence lately. It’s happening to just me. If my lunch is at 11, it gets pushed to 2. It’s really annoying and it makes me feel disrespected—my shifts pretty much tell me to “suck it up” because “that’s just how it has to be sometimes”

I don’t really want to bother my SM because she’s had a really bad case of the flu & I don’t know who her proxy is, my SSVs won’t give me their number. This feels like a dumb thing to go to my DM about but I may have to.

Based on what you've said, it seems like your breaks being pushed back sounds like your SSVs being buttholes.

But with that being said, you're not the only one. At my store, our breaks tend to be pushed back. But in our case, a lot of us actually like taking later breaks.

So I'd say talk to your manager cuz if you want/need to take your breaks on time and they're not doing that, then it's a problem

I normally don’t mind my breaks being pushed back, but 2-3 hours is pushing it

I get that. But my vote is still talking to your SM. Especially if you've voiced that you don't want your breaks pushed back that far.

Damn if we go over 5 hours without a lunch we get paid time and a half

that’s state specific

Reading the comments on this post made me realize how many breaks I have missed. As a minor. The first month I was working I got 8 hour shifts on Saturdays with only one 10 minute break and a 30. Also my SM messed up my schedule and gave me an 11 minute break? My store has very few partners and a lot of customers, the SM has asked multiple SSV's to meal violate multiple times.

We don’t even get our second 10s. I confronted a shift about it bc she said “we don’t do that here”. So I usually work 4:30am-12pm/1pm and get my 10 at 6:30am and then my meal at 9:30/10

this happens at my store too and i’m wondering if this is normal or something to be very concerned about

You can insist on your second 10, you’re entitled to it for over a 7 hour shift

i’m pretty sure in some states if you work over 5 hours you’re mandated a 30-1 hour break. Like, it’s illegal to not give it to you before the 5th hour mark. 3:30 is well past the 5th hour i would straight up tell your SM that what your shift lead is doing for breaks is illegal. If they can’t handle one or two ppl being on break during a 9 person play, they aren’t ready to be a shift lead.

also, just wanted to add for any overworked barista, breaks are so important. Beg for them if you have to, and if they say no and anything happens to you (say like you faint from being dehydrated or lack of glucose in your system) someone will definitely being getting fired for that. If you ask for a break, they really can’t deny you. Also what the hell is up with stores making ppl do their tens all at once or in the very beginning of their shift? I will throw hands if i don’t get my break every 2 hours. It’s a necessary work balance. When it comes to breaks shift leads just need to make fucking do. It’s 10 minutes without one person. OP, I’m sorry your shift lead is a complete negligent imbecile!

Breaks are a tough area bc 10s are not legally required, and 30s just have to happen at some point during the shift. We try really hard to make them happen at reasonable increments, but truly it's a balance of partner experience (bc all the partners suffer when you run a short floor) and business needs (we get our butts kicks for crappy numbers and not planning break appropriately to suit the business). I know it's tough, but please do try to take what steps you can to balance out the unpredictability of breaks. Eat before you come in, have a little snack on your 10, drink water, etc. Unless this only happens to you, it's likely just your SSV team trying to balance SM requests and barista preferences.

Yeah it’s literally only happening to me. Everyone always gets their breaks on time unless they ask for it to be later/earlier. Mine are consistently pushed back anywhere from 2-4 hours. I understand things happen but we had 9 people and we had literally 3 orders in drive, no cafe/mobiles. They refused to give me a reason why my break was the only one being pushed back significantly…even people that came in 2 hours after me got their lunches first

Seems like you’re being harassed by your supervisors because I would never want my baristas to go on their lunch break so late? It’s inhuman… So definitely let your store manager know everything that’s happening, document the time, the names, etc.
